Is there a group site anywhere for gamers on this topic?

What figures are being used? What rules?

You can try a promising Yahoo Group and also web site; Occult Wars

occultwars.com

As yet I don't think there is a release date for the rules…

I've always wanted to game something like this but just haven't had the time to research it. So hope some people post rules and miniatures ideas.

Copplestone's WH1 is a good candidate for Selene:

So is Hasslefree's "Kat":

As for Michael, the untransformed sewer-inhabiting Lycans or the well-armed long-coated Vampire forces, I am not sure.

There are plenty of choices for the transformed Lycans though:

I assume that Iron Wind Metals' Street Fight Gothic range was intended as an Underworld substitute: lots of vampires and werewolves with guns. Some of West Wind's RoadKill stuff would be useful too (including the rules – they aren't as bike-oriented as you might expect, but are all about armed vamps and werewolves).

Other Selene lookalikes: Hasslefree has two – Dionne (IIRC) as well as the Kat figure CC mentioned; and long-coated figures in RAFM's Cthulhu Modern Heroes range and Guardians of Order's Silver Sentinels range. Grab the latter while you can, since GOO is going out of business:

Iron Winds Street Gothic Range.
West Winds Roadkill. (they even have a "notBlade" figure.
Copplestones modern figures.
Foundry Street Violence.
Reaper Werewolves.
Hasselfree Kat and Dione as Selene.

These ranges will give you all the figures you need.

Hi, yer we at Occult wars are doing that sort of gaming. That is the very sort of thing our rules are aimed at. The rule should be out (fingers crossed) at Partizan on the 3rd Sep.

RoadKill offers some simple rules for pitting werewolves v's vampires. Possibly the new SuperSystem ( updated) by Westwind could do the job ( includes rules for transformation powers etc).
Most modern rule sets can be "tweaked" to include these types ( something like Savage Worlds is ideal).
If you think about it, the vampires and werewolves in Underworld were pretty evenly matched. This was mostly due to Hardware ( silver weapons , UV rounds). If you "downgrade" humans to being exeptionally weak then most modern skirmish systems can handle this.
Miniatures wise, the Vampires weren't particularly "Vampy" so you could use almost any modern mini and give them pale skin ( special forces minis etc). The werewolves I would use a less "uniformed look" as in human form they could be anyone. I would have seperate figures for each Werewolf for when they assume their true form ( Reaper minis do some nice ones).

The Combat Zone Chronicles has some additional rules for Vampires and Werewovles.

RoadKill … Possibly the new SuperSystem

Both are variants of 4Color's "Goal System", and should play in a quite similar way.

Steve Flanagan06 Aug 2006 6:14 a.m. PST

Oh, I forgot. Ground Zero games also does two Selene lookalikes (with and without long coat). But personally, I'd go for the Hasslefree ones every time.

Pappa Midnight06 Aug 2006 8:18 a.m. PST

"RoadKill … Possibly the new SuperSystem"

Your bang on. They both use the GoalSystem. RoadKill is "stand alone" and would do the job BUT the Supersystem allows for Transformations ( The werewolves in Roadkill are always Werewolves)and you could add any of those cool "Superpowers" as supernatural traits.
It all depends what you want. Roadkill is quite low-key with Vamps and Wolfies not hugely better than humans, whilst with SuperSystem you can make them truely powerful compared to humans!

Cacique Caribe06 Aug 2006 9:46 a.m. PST

Absolutely right. How could I have forgotten about Dione!

Since the setting of Underworld seems to be East/Central Europe, would East European Mafia ("underworld", get it?) figures work best as Lycans?

If so, any recommendations on 28mm figures of that type?

Penchour20 Apr 2007 3:03 p.m. PST

TAG eastern mafia guys will do ? Personnaly, I like the Foundry Street Violence line : some nice mafia guys and a bit(e) more 'SF'like weaponnery. Also the good ole Ral Partha Werewolf line !

For Rules, I think it would be easy to adapt Chain Reaction or All Things Zombie from Two Hour Wargames…

not to get back on topic or anything…

But as was mentioned, any modern combat game, especially if it is oriented around small "strike teams" would work fine. Mongoose is coming out with Battlefield Evolution/Special Ops. There's also "Rezolution: A Dark Tomorrow" which is a william Gibson cyberpunk game. The problem with it for your needs is that you can't construct your own characters from the ground up.

The only game I know that has a great system AND allows you to construct characters from the ground up to a total of points (called "Credits") and special attributes ("Traits") is Gangs of MEga-City 1, and they also have Werewolves in it. They also have plenty of other Traits that are suitable for any idea you may have of a Vampire.

To construct a "gang" of Lycen or Vamps all you would need to do is set gang size parameters (ie 3-5 models per gang), a Trait limit (ie 15 traits total, max 5 per ganger) and a credit limit (ie 15,000 credits to arm and equip them). You can easily use the stats of any number of specialists, also. It includes flying rules, but no official rules for vehicles (altho these are easily swiped from the ST or BE rules, which use the same basic system). GMC1 is available as a download at the Wargame Vault along with the sequal, "Death on the Streets". They are also planning a second edition for 2009 or something.

Anyway, unless someone wrote a set of rules from the ground up just for Lycens/Vamps, and you agreed with their take on it, GMC1 is the best "kit" I know to handle a skirmish game like that.

Usrivoy329 Dec 2008 12:25 p.m. PST

AAthebarbarian is right, any Modern game system could work. As I said on my blog, I have chosen SST simply because I know the rules and I can see (in my own warped mind) how it could work.

I will try to post my conversions tonight. If you are familiar with the original SST rules, maybe they will make a little more sense.

Usrivoy329 Dec 2008 8:02 p.m. PST

If anybody is interested, I posted the stats I have in mind for the SST / Underworld game.

usrivoy.blogspot.com

Let me know what you think. I'm hoping to try and playtest them this weekend.

Thanks
Scott

Sorry to resurrect a thread that's almost a year old, but since several threads on the subject existed, I didn't want to create yet another one.

Without further ado, here's a blog detailing what miniatures I chose for my Underworld gaming/collecting.

Manatic – nice blog. Thanks for sharing your figures ideas. I'll have to keep checking back to see what you're up to.

Thanks for the comments, I'll try to keep stuff interesting! I just painted the first few of the Foundry moderns as vampires and they turned out pretty nice. Pics in the future.
