I've just ordered bunch of 15mm Zombies and realise I need a good selection of cheap modern cars and trucks. Anyone have any suggestions? Do matchbox cars look ok next to 15's?

CorSecEng11 Oct 2012 5:06 a.m. PST

Matchbox is interesting.

I collect all the larger vehicles. They don't use a uniform scale. It's sized to fit in the packaging. So the larger vehicles work a lot better in 15mm. The cars are way to big. I've found some trucks that are ok.

VonTed11 Oct 2012 5:15 a.m. PST

There are many HO scale vehicles, that look decent next to 15mm fig! Particularly when they are based

Scorpio11 Oct 2012 5:24 a.m. PST

Matchbox and Hot Wheels is definitely the way to go. Both lines have a number of cars that will work, but neither stick very strictly to one scale, so make sure to take a close look at what you're buying. The price is right, though.

moonhippie311 Oct 2012 5:39 a.m. PST

I've got an entire tissue box full of matchbox cars from the sixties. Ufortuneately, they are on the second floor of a barn that is extremely unstable and ready to collapse, and guarded by diamand back rattlers. I've often thought about doing the Indiana Jones thing as I have a sword and pistol, But I would trade the gun for a good viking shield.
At any rate, having 60s vehicles with zombies seems to be ultra cool in my mind.

I use a lot of HO stuff for my 15mm.

khurasanminiatures11 Oct 2012 5:48 a.m. PST

Yes, architect's models of cars are available in 1/100 scale, though they are a bit pricey. They are very nice though.

Actually $50 USD for ten mixed cars is not terribly expensive. It's more than matchbox of course but matchbox do look rather toyish and are the wrong scale.

Take a couple 15mm figs into a toystore with you and do a visual comparison to the die cast cars.

Peter Pig do a Toyota pick-up and a couple of cars … Mercedes and Citreon if I remember correctly.

Cheers,

Thanks everyone for your help. I think I'll try sneaking a figure in with me. If they see me putting my 15mm back in my pocket and try to arrest me I'll let you all know. :o)

@moonhippie3. Sounds like an adventure! 60's would be the best! I worked as a wrecker at one stage when I was young. My tip is, low groans = structure dodgey, if the pitch goes up = get out!!!

Moqawama11 Oct 2012 7:46 a.m. PST

etotheipi:

I made a drawing of a precisely sized 15mm fig on a small cardboard rectangle which I carry with me at all times along with Driving License, ID, Credit Card, Fiscal Code, National Healthcare Code and such stuff one has to carry about.

The carboard is sealed under a transparent plastic wrap to avoid it getting wet or discoloured.

When in a store I see an interesting toy or scenery object I take out my trusty "15mm comparison card" and decide if it's ok to buy it or not.

I have already acquired several nice items thanks to this stratagem and I've steered away from purchases which would haven't had benefits altogether!

leidang11 Oct 2012 7:52 a.m. PST

There is a chinese company on e-bay that sells 1/100 cars pretty cheaply. Just seach 1/100 cars and you should find them.

clkeagle11 Oct 2012 7:57 a.m. PST

Here's a typical offering: 50 cars for $14 USD shipped. auction

They're nominally 1/87. But they will look fine next to action-posed 1:100 figures on bases.

Here is a deal for 100 part lot of 1/100th scale cars for about $16 USD

The Chinese 1/100 cars are spot on for 15mm. They look small as we're used to seeing over sized vehicles on our tables but they're actually just right. Try standing next to real car. Most will only come up to your chest at most unless it's an SUV or 4x4.

Maxshadow12 Oct 2012 5:40 a.m. PST

Thanks guys I justed ordered a 50 on Ebay at 30c each.
From a shop called "wehonest" :o) So they must be a safe bet.

Fabe Mrk 212 Oct 2012 5:47 a.m. PST

I bought those Chinese HO scale cars, they look too small to Me when I set them next to my 15mm stuff but for what I payed I guess there alright.

(I make fun of others)12 Oct 2012 8:27 a.m. PST

I understand that the wehonest seller is good about delivering product so you should be safe. I would suspect, however, that they may be pirated versions of architectural models.

SirFjodin12 Oct 2012 2:39 p.m. PST

Matchbox have these trucks in almost 1/100 1/87 scale. At least they are the closest cars to 15mm they have. Also check links after pictures, because there you can see differently coloured variants of these vehicles. Dont sure about other vehicle scales, but these vehicles here are checked for 15mm size compatibility, because I own them all.

Very useful selection of vehicles SirFjodin.

For those looking for 15mm Cars my box of cars arrived from "Mehonest" today.
I counted them and there was 52 so bonus two. Quality was good enough for the price at around than 30c each. IE they all had 4 wheels and windscreens.
Three different makes of car, recognizable as BMW, Mercedes and Toyota, and a Mini van.
With so many spares I have immediately begun to convert 3 police cars, and Ambulance and a Police van.
Scale is probably Minifig's 15mm than more recent casts but hey who will care?

I just received my 1:100 scale cheap cars from ebay. I opened them away from the house and I was afraid that they were a little small. When I got home I compared them to the Peter Pig wrecked Mercedes (which I recommend too), and it's pretty close! Especially when you take into account how much bigger a 70's or 80's Mercedes is compared to new cars.

They were .56 including shipping. They will definitely benefit from a re-paint, but I think as part of scenic pieces, they will work. They will be handy for populating my modern and Zombie boards.

Spendlove16 Nov 2013 4:02 p.m. PST

The Matchbox and Hotwheels cars are too big to go with 15mm figs. However the larger vehicles such as the trucks and industrial stuff are spot on.

Personally I use the 1:87 scale vehicles but be warned, they are stupidly expensive on eBay especially with rip off postage prices.

The HO scale Chinese four car variety packs you see on eBay seem to small for my 15mm figs however I have seen people's bat reps and they work? Some eBay auctions have them as N scale? Are the same models cropping up in two different scales but enterprising eBay sellers trying to sell them as one scale?

ACW Gamer18 Nov 2013 7:27 p.m. PST

Spendlove, I believe they are hawking them in two scales but I can't swear to it. I am having good luck with the vehicles, although they maybe "one off." They might actually be closer to "true 15mm."

Thanks for the tip on Matchbox/Hotwheels trucks. I need some and was wondering.

khurasanminiatures19 Nov 2013 6:07 a.m. PST

Do people care at all about getting 15mm scale car models? I wonder, because of the availability of the super-cheap pieces from China, if someone would be willing to pay 3.99 for a car.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP19 Nov 2013 7:45 a.m. PST

I would (and have) for vehicles that are out of the ordinary or don't look like the 15mm cars from China (which I use to bulk out the street traffic). Vehicles like your grav/wheeled car or Antenociti's grav cars.
So perhaps futuristic limos, SUVs and such?

Thanks,

Pat

I mean 15mm modern cars -- I've actually got more sci fi cars coming soon, as soon as I get them from the caster.

Spendlove19 Nov 2013 9:14 a.m. PST

It depends how detailed and how much really.

Sorry, too quick on the typing and too slow on the reading comprehension.

The Classy Gamer19 Nov 2013 10:23 a.m. PST

As far as modern cars go I've boxes and boxes of them I picked up for 15mm stuff.

they are 1/87 scale model kits. They come un assembled and that works out great. I can put little people in side them as needed and cut and mod the cars for different things.

I had to order them in bulk though to get the price with shipping under a buck.

I'll toss out some pictures.. These are assembled and painted with people added. The figures are a mix of 15mm, and ho scale seated train passengers. Some times I'll cut someone in half and use the seated legs or if the person is totally inside the car it will be a cheap train rider. They have to be modded some to fit in the cars though but it is pretty easy.

Also the photos are pretty bad

You can find them listed as 4D 1/87 model cars. Some people have them on ebay. I ordered mine right from China though.

There are at least two different sets out that I know of in that scale. One has 12 cars the other has 16

Spendlove19 Nov 2013 10:44 p.m. PST

Those cars are really good. How do they compare to 15mm figs?

The Classy Gamer20 Nov 2013 11:03 a.m. PST

The figures in the red car and and the guy standing in the white care are 15mm figs. The two in the front seat of the red car have their legs cut and modified. They have no lower legs as those could not be seen anyhow.

The guy sitting in the back of the red car just had his legs bent around after cutting the base off so he could be sitting there.

The fellow standing in the white car just has his base removed.
