QUESTION:

Has anyone else been working on sculpting, converting and/or painting boats, figures, terrain, etc., for their own 15mm Post Apocalyptic pirate raids?

Said boat is still in the same state, but I believe I have figured out how to get past the problems that stalled it.

Weapons and related nautical dodads being the biggest issue. And well roofs/upper decks.

Then there is the factoid of appropriate terrain to occupy the table with said vehicles.

So my question for a "water" drop-cloth, blue or brown/tan or green?

deflatermouse04 May 2012 10:47 p.m. PST

re:water cloth
Depends if your polar ice caps have melted or to what degree.

A melting of the ice caps or rise in ocean temp. will result in slowing of the ocean currents which will result in
a higher Algae growth. Depending on the type or wether it's in bloom would determin the colour:- grey/green, tan.

Add to that mix some presumed pollution too.

infojunky04 May 2012 10:55 p.m. PST

Well I wouldn't assume the whole Waterworld thingy, but more a huge Delta/swamp. Or at least that is what the PA Pirates setting looks like in my head.

Think the Central Valley of California under water or as a delta….

Cacique Caribe05 May 2012 6:09 a.m. PST

Infojunky,

I think that is superb work! Inspiring, in fact. Any tips for us?

Scorpio05 May 2012 6:51 a.m. PST

Man, those ships are inspirational.

infojunky05 May 2012 12:17 p.m. PST

Scorpio unfortunately the boat is the infamous collection of boxes.

But, a couple of tricks.

When I am forced to build a box to bulk up a model I 1st cut out all the parts of the box out of card. Then I frame the two longest sides with 1/8th square rod flush against the edges, this gives a much broader surface to cement the remaining facings to.

Choice of cement, I use mostly Plastruct's Plastic Weld, a nasty solvent based cement. But, if it is plastic it will probably work, in that any plastic that can be joined using the solvent welding method will generally respond well, including disimular plastics.

Pictures! Collect pictures! for inspiration, don't be afraid to chop them up if it is only one or two details that inspire you. I am totally a digital boy so my collection has migrated to the computer. I sort them using Picasa from Google, used to use Cpic, but Picasa is free. The generally sort is by general subject phenotype then more specific as needed. Every project that isn't just sitting at the table fiddling around gets it's own folder, I then draw the basic idea in a notebook based on the bits in the folder. Again mostly, sometimes the vision is fresh and solid and the build up flies. Most have an idea where you want to go.

But mostly build, if you have a half baked idea slap it together with whatever works for you. I have built a couple of 15mm Trade Starships out of nothing more than cigarette packs, masking tape, and scrap paper and cardboard, because I had a idea and those where the materials on hand and they went together fast. But the biggest thing is to build, I have a number of failures that work, just not in the way I hoped they would.

Back to the boat, it is really only a PA Tango Boat, as such I just mined my time in the Brown Water Navy.

Infojunky,

Do you plan to add a few tire bumpers for the sides?

Dan

infojunky05 May 2012 1:38 p.m. PST

I am thinking about it now, they where a detail that was driving me nuts earlier, but I think I have figured out how to do them with economy in both time and money.

I got a lot of good suggestions on this old thread:

Not as yet I just got this rounds message…

Cool though…

Cacique Caribe06 May 2012 1:34 p.m. PST

Andrew,

That is quite a find! Thanks.

Now, imagine that done for 15mm. I think Infojunky is going to be the first to achieve a 15mm PA Pirates game. We need to catch up! :)

Dan

infojunky06 May 2012 6:06 p.m. PST

Naw, the Painting will slow me down…..

And While I have a couple of houses built they still need lots of work.

But, in the Loud backstory in my head there is a large area know as "The Delta" Occupied by all the stereotypical players. Except for the strict A.I. Factions, as we all know "waterproof" electronics attract water…. Not saying there aren't followers of the Machine Cult nor the fellow followers of the Cult of Speed (Yes, red ones go faster!!).

See now there are plans for a floating merchant convoy, and red neck airboats and hovercraft…..

Man, Southeast Asia has got to be the model for the floating population. Thousands of little island with native populations floating from shore based to boat based living modes as the winds change.

Couple that with more than a few World Class Metropolitan areas to provide healthy ruins…

Couple that with small Trading boats that cruise from the Mediterranean Sea and along the East African Coast Trading all along the way.

Oh, and Piracy is a casual form of Day Labor.

Mako1116 May 2012 2:26 a.m. PST

Great looking stuff!

Anyone know who made the original jetski prototype model, these were modified from?

Cacique Caribe17 May 2012 9:15 a.m. PST

Infojunky,

PM or, better yet, email* me when you can, with your mailing address. I may have a few things to send you that, I hope, you'll be able to use with your PA armada.

You might need to Apocalyptic-fy some of them a little, but they might allow you to skip over a big step in your process.

If I was seriously doing this I would simply be using the Rustyrail HO boats with a few plastic additions from the European makers.

I don't get why the ocean liner is hanging up there in the Floodliners picture. It makes no sense at all. However it got up there, like the chevy on top of the Ettamoggah Pub, I see now way it shouldn't have fallen down by now.

That (Dr Mathias's Water World) is a superb build – the water and wake effects are stunning (hot glue and acetate? gonna write that one down!). The modelling and painting is top notch.

Hey, Infojunky,

When not out and about raiding, are your PA Pirates going to be on an island of their own, or will they be based on a cluster of stilt-houses?

From a quick measure using the scale bar on the picture, the Uzichi Compounds is approx 33m x 25m.
Could reduce width by losing the car & putting extra growing areas on roofs.

Dan

War Monkey09 May 2013 11:45 a.m. PST

First off, sure Khurasan's Pirates should work can't see why not.
The compound could be put on a couple of barges with gangways between them, I have plans written down somewheres were I was going to use 1x6 and 1x8s cut down to 12 in and 16 in lenghts and then cover it in card stock with other bits here and there so you wouldn't know it was a chunk of wood and to save time with all the sanding to make smooth enough again so it wouldn't look like one big chunck of wood.

Making Your Own 15mm Post Apocalyptic Boats?

My biggest problem has always been symmetry of the hulls. And, when I look for wooden boat hulls online, they can be pretty expensive.

Well, I found this by accident, and it might just solve my dilemma and help others …

Laser cut surfboards in the crafting section, have "right curves" and, I've been told, are precision cut:

picture

auction

Well, these above come in three sizes (4", 5" and 6"), so all you would need to do is get one of each size, glue them one on top of the other, add filler to gaps and sand!

Is that cool or what (well, in theory)?

Scaled at 1/35 (just shrink it down for 15mm) could be an easy way to create some boats for your PA pirates!

Dear All

If you are interested have got a 10Wx28Lx3cmH flat top barge made from 2mm MDF for sale at £6.50 GBP & a cargo pit version of same barge at £6.50 GBP.
Have done a larger barge (45x15x6cmH at £12.00 GBP), was designed for 28mm but I can modify (smaller hatches) to 15mm scale.

Have to have a go at doing the redneck house boat, been meaning to do some 'mobile' housing just for those zombie gamers.

Actually, perhaps you should look at the latest issue of New Scientist – the cover story this week is a piece on how while sea levels may rise in some areas they will fall in others. I kind of went "huh?" at this point but apparently it is a phenomenen seen on lakeshores.

So you may see floods in one area and new salty land exposed in another…

Is that Infojunky boat on sale anywhere?

Twoball Cane07 Aug 2013 7:55 a.m. PST

The scene has several boats in15mm… some of which are post apocolpytic
And some which could be brown water navy type boats…or those bayou ones with the fans on back them… (name escapes me)

For those who aren't kitbashers.

infojunky07 Aug 2013 7:15 p.m. PST

Sorry Walt, it is not, it is still languishing on my worktable like so many other projects. This year has kinda been a wash for me, with major abdominal surgery and a lengthy hospital stay and recovery at home has kinda sidelined everything. I just cleared my desk of the layers of Insurance paperwork to find the collection of Post Apocalyptic aquatic models in the same state as they were in March.

Cacique Caribe08 Aug 2013 8:27 a.m. PST

Infojunky,

As much as we would love to see products ready right away, please keep in mind that we know that health, family and work must come first.

Hope things improve for you and yours very soon. And please keep in touch, as circumstances permit.
