For Old-time Pirate games and Post Apocalyptic Pirate gamers alike . . .

Look at what I've just found:

Now, if we are talking the same polystyrene material as the Evergreen and Plastruct styrene strips, then THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES!!! And, if you make a mistake, no biggie. You'll have more than a 100 others to play with (unless you keep a few and send the rest out to other gamers as gifts).

Hopefully they have the "6 PS" recycling symbol underneath, which would indicate true molded polystyrene:

So . . . what do you think of this banana boat hull idea, for becoming the starting point of your boat/ship projects? CRAZY IDEA???

By the way, it looks like the Douglas Stephen Plastics SBB and LBB seem best, since they don't have the concave stern that some of the others do (those others are really just lids, I believe).

From Douglas Stephen Plastics (the manufacturer): "Made from clear OPS plastic and available in all the popular shapes and sizes"

I played with these as a kid. They are the same material as Hefty drink cups…6 PS. Not overly durable, but you might be able to cast plaster into them.

jdpintex22 Apr 2011 12:35 p.m. PST

Certainly not the same strength as Evergreen/Plastruc styrene stips. Much more flimsy.

But at least it's a start and gives you something to work from.

Cacique Caribe22 Apr 2011 12:46 p.m. PST

If it's the same material as Evergreen/Plastruct styrene strips, then the thin styrene strips can be easily glued to the outside of the banana boat hull (with glues like cyanoacrylate, perhaps?), right?

So, it is clear that the banana boat dishes are NOT going to become hulls all on their own. They are too flimsy without additional support. They would be just to keep a uniform boat/ship shape, as they serve as a base for bulking and building up.

Anyway, just another crazy idea, I guess. :)

Dan
PS. And, if the clear banana boat is too high, the ridges can help trim the height down evenly to where you want/need it:

Think those clear plastic covers they put on DQ Blizzards or Mickey D's shakes. Pretty flimsy.

leidang22 Apr 2011 1:13 p.m. PST

Check Michael's or hobby lobby for the nautical decorative row boats or sail boats. Made out of real wood and once all the crap is trimed off you get some really nice hulls.

Yaaar!

Ken Sharp22 Apr 2011 5:12 p.m. PST

They stack together, so laminate three together with the proper adhesive. That should take care of the strength problem. You'll have to dress the deck line, but I think that should be done if only using one hull.

Great! Now I want a banana split! ;)

125 would make a fleet! I'd have to buy Pirates and Royal Navy and Merchant sailors and lots of cannon.
Weaselhoffen.

Oh and I'll have a banana split too. Put it on Ken Sharp's tab.

Fill one with plaster, make a mold, and then produce a resin one to your liking.

How about sticking the sundae dishes together to make classic 50s UFOs?

Anyone for Pirates versus Aliens? :-)

Grelber23 Apr 2011 5:39 a.m. PST

Cut down a bit, these might make good landing boats for my 28mm figures. Just spray paint them brown, and you're ready to land at Tanga or Gallipoli.

And if anything happens to one, like the man said: you have a hundred more.

J Womack 9427 Apr 2011 1:52 p.m. PST

I need something like this for my airships.

Want to split a box, Dan?

religon28 Apr 2011 7:02 a.m. PST

These are hard to cut well. They tend to split in strips once the lip is cut. Stacking 2-3 might work with a covering facade over the lips to make a ship hull.

JWomack94: "Want to split a box, Dan?"

I would love to, even though I think I won't need more than 20 or so.

My only problem is that I won't be home for another week or two. So, if I placed the order, you would have to wait some time before I can send you the bulk of them

Guys,

I might finally be ordering this set later this week:

If they are flimsy, Fill them with plaster and put a plasticard deck over the top.

Cacique Caribe07 Oct 2011 11:13 a.m. PST

Ok. I've just ordered these instead:

I hope they are polystyrene or some other plastic that will take super glue easily, because I plan to add bits of Plastruct and Evergreen polystyrene to them.

By the way, has anyone seen these "Pirate ship cake decorations"?
