I've seen many of the pieces sold out there, but would really like to see examples of scratch-built work.

Has anyone ever tried to make something like this?

I haven't buit my Bazaar yet but I am still plotting it…

I would love to see stuff that incorporates tech bits and panels.

Not yet, but I will be making a 6mm one for my FUBAR games.

I might have a go. Makes a nice change from stalingrad type ruins that I always think I want to make.

Looks like what we used to make for Gorka Morka terrain back in the days when I worked in GW Marketing. I love post Apocalyptic games (even when playing them with orks).

I've got one planned. It will be devoid of any wood as a building material. I figure any that survived the end is used for fuel.

My thoughts exactly!

Shrunk down a necromunda mine shaft template and covered with carved basla wood, hirst art mold bits and cardboard.

That's precisely why I made this printable kit:

(Just wish someone had actually used buildings in their games…)

More kitbashed than scratchbuilt, but here's links to a pair of buildings and a dumptruck. I'm gradually trying to put together a Sci-Fi Frontier mining camp.

Dan, a chap over at Lead Adventures forum has made something similar to what you have pictured.

"a Sci-Fi Frontier mining camp"

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about!

Not just a standard shantytown or junkyard, but something with more SF elements mixed in, like bits, panels and containers from a spaceship* or other tech things.

And yes, in such a camp kitbashed is more accurate than scratch-built. The tech/spaceship bits will have to obviously come from other things at hand.

One could start with something really basic, like a couple of plastic drawer organizers, and then add lots of other things that show unplanned expansion:

I plan to add porches with corrugated roofs and upright steel supports, as well as steel grating pathways:

A couple of structures like like these could form the core of the settlement, followed by chaotic expansion:

I doubt that the add-ons would be of concrete, as Outcasts' Forthaven seems to have:

And a couple of these could be the official company structures, that will then be surrounded by improvised shacks erected by all sorts of "camp followers" and "walk-ins":

You can almost see where each of those sections of the Terra Nova colony came from, once you take a close look at the USS Conestoga:

I wonder how hard it would be to scratch-build some REALLY BIG tents/awnings like these:

Dan, it should be easy enough – I'd go with some framework (crashed spaceship etc) and then use thin cloth with watered down pva glue spread across it, drape it how I want then let it dry in place and paint it. I think that would work as I'm sure I've seen similar done before.

Cacique Caribe14 Dec 2011 6:02 a.m. PST

Hmm. Never done that for a large area, but it's worth a try.

I guess I would have to make it so it is somehow removable too, so I can do combat beneath.

Dan

alien BLOODY HELL surfer14 Dec 2011 6:55 a.m. PST

perhaps as it'll be hidden, you can make a framework under the tent cover so it's more rigid when you remove it etc, plus it'd strengthen it anyway. you could make a basic circular frame raised from the ground which can be hidden by clutter. you could make holes into the the top of the vertical supports to peg the roof piece into. (hard to fully describe what I mean just with words lol)

Cacique Caribe14 Dec 2011 3:05 p.m. PST

No. You did great. I can see it.

I can almost imagine a giant spider sitting on top of the camp, with the legs being the tent supports. And all of it can be removed as a single piece.

Cool!!! Now I need to sketch the darn thing, starting with the framework.

Thanks so much,

Dan

thats it! and you're welcome – look forward to monitoring the progress if you give this a go :-)

Has anyone else made any other scratch-built SF examples recently?

Thanks,

I'm in the process of posting a bunch of these for sale. This is the first one from the set, "Borderlands" 001. I have about 30 items going up for sale at my shop valleyofisk.com

I will try to post more pics here soon. Meanwhile, you can also see a gallery of these first on my facebook page:
facebook.com/valleyofisk

I am posting more pics as the day goes on.

Here is a quick outline of how they were made:
The Borderlands set is inspired by the games "Rage" and "Borderlands", as well as the film "District 9". The core elements of the Borderlands scenery are made from recycled deli cooler shelving. Additional walls were added to the plastic elements to flesh out the structures. Materials used are foam core and single sided corrugated cardboard. The grass was made using horse hair from local horses. The paints used are interior matte latex. The models are first primed with a black spray primer to allow paint to adhere to the structures. Borderlands are intended for 28mm scale war games miniatures.

And those are all scratchbuilt?

Eli Arndt15 May 2012 6:15 p.m. PST

I am inspired to make more shanties, but perhaps with more of a scifi bent to them.

Cacique Caribe15 May 2012 6:35 p.m. PST

Eli,

I agree with you. Something that doesn't look too 21st century.

Eli,

I agree with you. Something that doesn't look too early 21st century.

Dan

Dalanshin16 May 2012 8:50 a.m. PST

Yep, they are all scratchbuilt. I'd been wanting to make stuff like this since you and a few others started posting scifi shanti threads a while back.

Now I am hot to pick up a couple of the Lead Adventure post apoc figure sets to paint up and battle in them.

picture

Another reason I made these is to produce something smaller and cheaper for my store, since a lot of my past projects are big, time consuming and thus pricey.

Now, if I could just find the ideal set of skirmish rules for these… :)
