I made these for 15mm, but I think that some of the tips could help out with 28mm projects too.

Initial look:

* Small drawer organizers
* Pill bottle tops
* Homemade putty doors
link

Current look:

* Small drawer organizers
* Yo-yo halves from dollar store
* GZG doors
link

Hope you like the changes.

Anyway, I was thinking, how about if the colonists or shipwreck survivors made dwellings directly out of their escape pods? What would they look like?

If so, I imagined them more trapezoidal than box-like, which goes perfectly with the cheap drawer organizer option already available to me.

Imagine those compartments initially serving as ship "cabins", where the settlers live and sleep, one for each family, as they make their long trip across space. Upon reaching orbit around their destination, the "cabins" then detach and become landing pods:

Once they land, the pods then become the settlers' first homes on the new planet/moon, which they go on to modify and personalize as they see fit, with awnings, porches and such.

So, the idea is that they go from ship cabins to being escape/landing pods and, from there, to finally becoming the initial buildings for a colony.

NOTE: The GZG building fittings are absolutely perfect for escape pod tech doors:

Now, once I get the stitches out of the surgery incisions on my arm, I promise to glue the new roofs and doors, and take additional photos for your enjoyment.

Hope this helps and/or inspires.

Dan

I plan to add metal decking/grating floors near the doors on some, to make them look like more personalized homes.

Great idea – for our last game, we needed a Mexican village, which after a quick trip to the dollar store I created with four small boxes, a craft knife and a spray can of tan paint

Frederick,

I agree!!! You can find all kinds of cool goodies at dollar and party supply stores.

In this case, I got 12 cheap and easy-to-tear-apart yo-yos for around a dollar:

Very nice ideas

Good stuff!
I really like those little bugs you've made too… some could also serve as 6mm biomech drop pods.

*slaps forehead*

Yo-yo halves! Genius, sir, utter genius!

Cacique Caribe07 Feb 2010 10:43 p.m. PST

LOL!

And they are made so cheaply, that they pop in half with little or no effort!!!

Yes, love the yo-yo halves, great tip.

Cacique Caribe08 Feb 2010 7:01 p.m. PST

Well, with the Yo-yo halves and new GZG doors, I hope they no longer look too much like drawer organizers.

"The journey to Terra Nova from Earth would take nine years at the warp speeds attainable in that period. The SS Conestoga was commissioned for the task, and was specially constructed so that it could be dismantled on arrival to serve as homes and service buildings for the colony."

Is that cool, or what?

I'd like to see some of these painted so I can see what you are doing with the yo-yo halves. Dome or windows or what?

I'm finally going to give it a shot and finish the buildings. But, before I paint them, I'd like to hear your thoughts . . .

Should I paint them a flat metallic (aluminum?) color like the ones in these pictures?

Or should I paint them "Star Trek"-like (bluish-white) or something else?

What do you say?

Thanks,

Flat metallic, assuming these are actually colonists' pods. If they've got money behind them go with the shiny white-blue corporate look.

Actually Dan, the Star Trek pods are a pale blue-gray. Another set of colors you could try, that are in use with Starfleet, are light smoky grays, almost a tan.

I like the Star Wars scarred and charred grey.

A superb use of household waste and doors etc. A man after my own heart sir!

I like the layered look: metallic, overlaid with black scorch-marks from re-entry (and maybe some gunfire), and over that lots of dust and mud.

Seen the containers in BBC's "Outcasts"?

Hmm. How about this one?

That seems like adequate livable space, until they can move or expand. Don't you think?

Search for styrene sheets with simple moulded greeblies to add to the "escape pod" buildings . . .

Form follows function. If you used a dismantled 747 as the basis for your town, it would be very recognizable in terms of the parts. First you must define the parts. Secondly you must work the part to create the pragmatic use of them in terms of structures.
In effect, create the space craft and then distribute the parts to create your structures. Leave many recognizable features to give clues as to their origins. If not in terms of shape then with signage. 'NO STEP' goes a long way with air craft parts.
Of course you could cut up and old plastic ice tray and use lots of arm waving. Whatever pleases…
