I'm not familiar with the lingo of train aficionados, so what is this thing really? Is it a new form of housing program for "undesirables"? auction link Or . . . link And (if not put in a silly place, like the middle of a train track), could it be used as a small shanty or shelter for 15mm Post Apocalyptic survivors? Too large? Too small? Or just right? Thanks, Dan TMP link |

i think its basically a coal bunker doubling as a buffers. link I'd say (at a guess) too small. |

Maybe as a Post Apocalyptic dog house then? :) Dan |

Dog house or a secret door to a sly gyro copters underground hideout? I think you know the right answer ;) |

i think its basically a coal bunker doubling as a buffers. Basically they were simple wooden cribbings that were filled with gravel and stones. The gravel would provide mass and a little bit of give should a train car get away from the tender or the brake man. When they wanted to move it – they could simply remove one of the sides and let the gravel spill out. No need to move any heavy ballast and nothing to clean up. Most often they were built using old (or new) railroad ties – so they were common in areas that a temporary stop was needed (places that they were laying new track or where they were repairing existing track). Whether or not there is use really depends on the original scale. An N or HO scale one would be much too small for a shanty in 15 mm. However, a larger O scale one might have use as a small N scale shack. There are a lot of other trackside shacks that would work better though. |

It looks like something you could craft in only a few minutes anyhow using ballast and foam core. |

The ones I have seen would probably be a bit small for a 15mm shanty. Maybe an inch square for an OO/HO version. |

Humm, and Inch square probably would be just about right for a Shanty. I am thinking maybe I have been building too big for my PA dwellings
.. I think I am going to the Hardware SuperStore and tour Sheds after the Doctors today. |

It looks like something you could craft in only a few minutes anyhow using ballast and foam core. And if you chose to go that route, you could make it 15mm shanty-sized and not be locked into the sizes at N, HO, OO or O. |
