I was inspired by some images in this TMP thread to try my hand at making spaceship-part settlement buildings. What's more, I decided to make them out of paper, and try and make them as good as traditional resin, MDF, etc buildings. Here's the end result:
The accompanying article goes through the procedure of making it, from Sketchup to painting. More importantly, for most people, it has downloadable template so that you can make your own. |

Very cool. Considerate it borrowed. |

I also plan to make the templates for the beige buildings available. They're designed to be stackable, so you can change the configuration easily. |

Wow, that looks superb! Thanks for sharing your article, and artwork. How did you cut the mailing tube in half, linerally, with such a nice, straight edge? A bandsaw, perhaps? |

I'm generally not big on paper terrain. Even the best of it tends to look disappointingly flat in the details. You've managed to avoid that pitfall in a rather impressive fashion. |

I cut the paper tube in half using a metal ruler and a knife. It's not a perfect cut, but it's close. I admit that was the hardest part, and the line was eyeballed. However, it was still less work than building a jig which probably would have failed anyway. It's probably easier to build your own half-pipe by carefully bending paper (or plastic, for that matter). |

Thanks for the info. Impressive, since I can imagine trying to hold a tube, while cutting it lengthways is more than a bit challenging. |

Lesack, You da man!!! Love what you've done there. Amazing. And I really appreciate making it available to others for free. Mighty fine of you, sir: PDF link I'm so glad the wrecked ship settlement concept is finally "taking off"! From a ship like this: link To a settlement like this:
The possibilities and building configurations could be endless. And I think John Eaves got it right when he designed the SS Conestoga to be taken apart upon arrival by settlers: link The first colonies should have ships that can be disassembled and used as habitats. Maybe the cabins they lived in while on travel could be the same units they live in once on the ground. I hope this is just the start of a few more amazing designs by you, Lesack. :) Dan TMP link TMP link TMP link TMP link |

And how about something like this to add to the surfaces, to enhance the 3D effect? TMP link TMP link Dan |

Gonna have to grab the files and see if I can run them thru my vinyl cutter. It's just powerful enough to score thinner plasticard so I can snap it out. My cutting skills are severely lacking. |
