Shooting Rules for Light Bobs AWI Skirmish Rules

Lets face it, when you look at a new set of rules you go right to the combat section of the rules, I know I do.

So I am going to present here a very quick glimpse in the shooting part of Light Bobs AWI skirmish rules.

First you should know that units can't always return fire! Only certain circumstances allow a unit to shoot back. A few of them are…

Within Close Range, having a leader attached or being commanded to do so by the units leader.

Here is the Shooting Combat Procedure

1.Determine number of Shooting dice (see Shooting Dice below.)
2.Roll for strikes based on the target's vulnerability (see Target Vulnerability below.)
3.Perform situation rolls.
4.Hits are removed as figure losses.

1. Shooting Dice

Elite – 2d6 per figure
Veteran – 1d6 per figure
Average – 1/2d6 per figure – round up
Poor – 1/2 d6 per figure – round up (they roll 1/3rd d6 if in melee)

2. Target Vulnerability (Hit Number per d6)

Elite – 1-2
Veteran – 1-2
Average – 1-3
Poor – 1-4
Cannon Crew – 1-2 being shot at

3. Situation Rolls (Maximum number is 1-5)

Long Range 1-4
Close Range 1-3
Melee 1-2
In cover +1 to above
Shot at by or unit is a skirmish unit +1

4. Removed hits which are strikes that were not saved by a Situation Roll.

Advanced Rule – Return Fire
This part of the rules are where I tried to simulate in a simple way the speed in which units in a fire fight if you will could reload.

Units that are shot at and capable of returning fire must do so. Both units draw a randomizer card (ignore the color) to determine who shoots first. If the result is a tie the shooting is simultaneous. If oneunit has a higher value it shoots first and applies any damage to the other unit which will then shoot back if it can in its state after being shot at.

Randomizer Card Modifiers
The randomizer card is modified by the following
+1 Attached Leaders combat bonus (bonus is the number).
+1 Unit is better morale class.
+1 resting weapons on a wall or fence.
+1 Crack or Disciplined – one only (usually grendiers and light troops)
-1 Each Disorder greater than opposing unit

The modifiers are to the final value of the card so if a unit had a +1 modifier and drew a numbered card with a value of 1 the value would be increased to 2.

What Are Randomizer Cards

A randomizer card generates a number between 1 and 3.
If the rules call for it a red card is a – and a black card is a +.
Numbered cards have a vale of 1.
Face cards have a value of 5.
Aces have a value of 3.
Jokers jut win.

I hope you find this little insight of interest. Some people that don't like cards asked me why I didn't use a d6. Well if I want a negative number (which I don't in this part) I need to roll a control die. Also in this section the player might forget to use the modifiers to raise the value of the die and instead raise the pip value of the die.

Respectfully

What's the basing btw? Is it single-figure?I've got a War of Independence project finally beginning this year and I'm trying to go for the most flexible.

Streitax03 Apr 2015 11:46 a.m. PST

Sorry, way too complicated for me.

Streitax- Agreed.

Single figure preferred.

Haven't played them, but British Grenadiers would be hard to beat for the feel of the period. By the way, I didn't write British Grenadiers and I have no financial stake in them.

Wouldn't it be better to buy some ad space on TMP instead of posting repeatedly on this board as if the rest of us are interested?

I have no problem if someone that doesn't profit financially from a rules set posts a question, discuss, etc, but for the author of a rules set (no matter how proud of his work) to repeatedly post doesn't seem quite kosher to me.

Winston Smith03 Apr 2015 3:26 p.m. PST

Well, I don't mind rules authors, or even figures manufacturers, posting about their wares here.

Btw, I heard you mention at your play test that you didn't want to use old familiar phrases like "saving throw". That phrase, and others, have the virtue of being familiar concepts. grin
They avoid confusion.

PKay Inc03 Apr 2015 3:27 p.m. PST

If you're not interested, why would you be reading the post?

Winston Smith03 Apr 2015 3:28 p.m. PST

The game is also a different level of play than British Grenadier". You are a battalion commander rather than a brigade or division commander.
That is rather rare in rules.

Juan Kerr03 Apr 2015 4:02 p.m. PST

What a Bleeped text. If you have an issue with someone posting don't open the post. Not my period but is always helpful to have information about a new set of rules.

historygamer03 Apr 2015 4:13 p.m. PST

I don't mind authors posting either, but at least five different threads/posts by the author in less than a month. Just sayin.

historygamer03 Apr 2015 4:17 p.m. PST

I have a friend who has written rules on the period. They are rather new. He bought ad space on TMP, and I don't believe he has posted on this board once. Again, just sayin.

PKay Inc03 Apr 2015 7:26 p.m. PST

So who's keeping him from posting on this board?

Juan Kerr03 Apr 2015 7:46 p.m. PST

It's the 18th Century discussion board, greenknight4 is discussing the firing mechanism he uses in the 18th Century rules he has written. Your friend is welcome to discuss his rules on here too and I'm sure people would be interested if the were looking for a set for the period. Just sayin.

historygamer03 Apr 2015 8:00 p.m. PST

Perhaps my friend has a sense of decorum. He knows when an ad should be an ad (especially since he worked in the gaming industry for many years), and not posting under the guise of general interest – time and time again – with the author largely driving the posts as if there were some interest. Of the first eight posts here, four were by the author – only one in response to a question.

One thread, okay. Two, uh, okay. Five? Seems like an ad/spam to me – especially since most are largely the author answering unasked questions. I get it. This is a cheap way to advertise. Don't be cheap. Pay for the advertising. If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck – it's an ad.

Ironwolf03 Apr 2015 8:02 p.m. PST

If I recall correctly, Light Bobs was advertised on TMP last month….. Don't like the topic, don't open the post!

historygamer03 Apr 2015 8:04 p.m. PST

Other thread has 14 posts, with 8 by the author. Ad. Why did he need to post two threads? Oh. Ad. Got it.

MH Dee03 Apr 2015 8:17 p.m. PST

Er…In the past few months I've bought British Grenadier, Land of the Free, and I'm about to order the BP Rebellion supplement. I'm aware it doesn't float everyone's boat, but I'm happy enough that a rules author has given me a little more (free) insight into a set for a period I'm planning to do.

But I suppose if you enjoy instead a random guy spamming with weeks-old news (from major companies) that might might be not your cup of tea.

greenknight4 Sponsoring Member of TMP03 Apr 2015 9:03 p.m. PST

Gents I do advertise here and have been paying for many years, Day of Battle Games. Thank you to the people that understand. There are many rules here that do what I am doing and I see nothing wrong in it. For me this site is about news and education.

Juan Kerr03 Apr 2015 9:23 p.m. PST

Whining about someone posting five threads in a month when certain other people post up to twenty threads a day and then complaining about decorum? I don't care how long someone has worked in the industry, greenknight4 is a sponsoring member of TMP and the threads are relevant to miniatures gaming so I have no problem with them. Take a look at some of the random unrelated/out of date crap that gets posted day after day on here. If greenknight4's lack of decorum offends you I suggest you use the ignore feature

Winston Smith03 Apr 2015 9:24 p.m. PST

If you will take a look at the TMP logo by his name, the color of it says he is an advertising supporting member.
Just like nevinsrip and Der Alte Fritz and Doug at MSC.
Any more unfounded attacks ?

MH Dee03 Apr 2015 10:24 p.m. PST

Greenknight4 – *I* found it helpful, and I'm not sure what the problem is. I look forward to checking out your rules.

But then again, this place is occasionally totally bizarre….

B6GOBOS04 Apr 2015 3:32 a.m. PST

I do not play "light bobs". But they look very interesting and worth playing and it is real nice to have the author of the rule system explain the rules. I wish there were more threads like this. Looks like I will be buying these rules very soon!

GamesPoet Supporting Member of TMP04 Apr 2015 10:31 a.m. PST

Haven't played them, but British Grenadiers would be hard to beat for the feel of the period. By the way, I didn't write British Grenadiers and I have no financial stake in them.

Have you shared a thread regarding the game in more detail?

Wouldn't it be better to buy some ad space on TMP instead of posting repeatedly on this board as if the rest of us are interested?

I've seen Day of Battle Games advertised on TMP.

I have no problem if someone that doesn't profit financially from a rules set posts a question, discuss, etc, but for the author of a rules set (no matter how proud of his work) to repeatedly post doesn't seem quite kosher to me.

Bummer. What better a person to describe the rules for folks than the author? Whether they start the thread or not. And can't recall an ad that does that.

Also, this is TMP. It seems to provide a place for those smaller guys who craft products on a small scale, and provide opportunity for creative promotion of such, and in a discussion format. That strikes me as being good for the hobby at large.

epturner07 Apr 2015 9:37 a.m. PST

So, I goes and gets the Download and whom do I see on Page Three, but a picture of my mate Ken Gavin from the 1st New Jersey…

Now I want to get the rules, just to see what pictures Chris used from our Photographic Distaff, Meredith Barnes, the Pride of Tom's River… grin

And The OFM approves these rules, which means I need to pack up some Light Bobs, some Jersey Blues, and a little Lager and head up into the wilds of Luzerne County and see how these play.

epturner – It is an ever shrinking world. Meridith was very helpful when I first found her images online.
