If I recall correctly, it was a question I posed a couple of years ago regarding an SF novel about a group of soldiers that had to trek across a desert planet, while being attacked by alien natives (and, I think, also alien critters). The concept is similar to the one in the game Outpost Gamma, but it was a novel and not a game, and the troops did not stay and wait for the attacks to happen. They were constantly on the move and I had asked if such a "race" could be done as a game. Anyone remember it? Thanks, Dan TMP link TMP link TMP link |

I remember that thread, Dan, but I couldn't tell you how to go about searching for it. I can't remember what the topic was, not even a keyword. I'll try a few searches . . . |

I can't remember the book title or the author either. Dan |

While it's not set on a desert planet, Weber and Ringo did a series about a unit trying to get from a dry salt lake landing to a (probably enemy held) space port. Most of the terrain was jungle, though. The first book was titled "March Upcountry" and here is an Amazon link: tinyurl.com/5t6q9fh David Drake wrote a book that is also similar entitled "Redliners" and it's Amazon link is: tinyurl.com/5t7y8px Both are also available as free downloads from Baen Books, btb.

Try searching google (it's much more powerful than the TMP search engine as it includes the thread content as well as title), using a combination of your username, TMP and whatever keywords you think might lead to a result. In these threads you refer to the novel Beyond The Gates by Catherine Wells, sounds vaguely like what you describe but you're a very prolific poster so it's hard to know for sure. :-) Cheers, Andy TMP link TMP link |

Yeah, Dan, if you'd post less, things like this would be a lot easier to find. :) |

Found it!!! Here's the book:
Description: "'Marines, we have just become a low-tech deep recon patrol . . .' Stranded in a hellish alien desert, stripped of their strategic systems, quick reaction force, and supporting arms, and carrying only a day's water ration, Marine Staff Sergeant Charlie Bass and his seven-man team faced a grim future seventy-five light-years from home. The only thing between his Marines and safety was eighty-five miles of uncharted, waterless terrain and two thousand bloodthirsty savages with state-of-the-art weapons in their hands and murder on their minds." Wow, hope they have lots of ammo, and even better armor, since 2,000 savages with "state of the art" weapons sounds like bad odds, even for a battalion of marines. |
