"Very nice! The pilot station looks like a video game machine." LOL. I never meant for that to be the case. But, when you build it last, you find that your fingers are too big to insert the right pieces and position them correctly. Dan |

Tell us how you did it, mnan! -Eli |
Cacique Caribe | 14 Apr 2011 10:01 a.m. PST |
Well, the hull section was one of several resin casts that The Scene UK had done of my original balsa and basswood sampan. Those pictures start here: link As you can see in those photos, I purposely made the original to include a "lip" on which to set up any styrene upper works I wanted to add later. Other than that bit of foresight, the rest was really trial and error. I never expected it to turn out half decent, so I didn't bother taking WIP pics along the way. Let me know if the following makes sense. If not, I'll try to explain further. So I started with the two triangular strips, which are really made from a "Beware of Dog" sign, because I couldn't find thin styrene in my area. After I added an Evergreen styrene L strip along the top of those, I then cut small irregular bits of the sign and embossed them with a pen, to look like repair plates. After I had done that, I realized that some of my PA "Pirates" were not going to be tall enough to fire over the front and sides (mainly the Peter Pig HMG militia). So I had to add plastic canvas (granny grating) to the front and rear decks. Then I built a frame for the rear cabin area using some more of the L strips, and glued on more strips of the sign, along with patchwork plates. I'll take a few more pics tonight, to show the underside of the corrugated roof, and include a few figures on the boat for scale. I'll post them in the same Flickr folder: link Dan PS. I used CA glue on everything except the plastic canvas. |

Thanks Dan! You did a really good job on all the panelling. It looks like a single cast piece. What trick did you use to get it to look like that? -Eli |
Cacique Caribe | 14 Apr 2011 10:17 a.m. PST |
Well, it's a combination of scoring the side panels with a sharp hobby knife and adding the occasional styrene thin "plates" at random points to the surface of those panels, to try to simulate damage and repair work: link link If you pull up the close-ups of the other pics, you'll see I am definitely no expert when it comes to boat-building. There's a lot of detail I missed, but that I can now see in the zoomed photos. I guess I must need new glasses or something. Hopefully, the paint will hide some of those "details". Dan |

Still looks awesome. That sign must have been pretty soft for you to be able to emboss and score it with a pen. -Eli |

Hey Dan! I will be playing the role of Devil's Advocate tonight
your metal roof bits, if you layer then as such then the rain will soak the people and stuff underneath. If you and still move them around then perhaps as such picture That said, I still like it and I think you are onto something here
make a handful, a few floating docks, link them together and have a floating village :) |
Cacique Caribe | 14 Apr 2011 5:26 p.m. PST |
LOL. Actually, the one I ended up putting on the boat was the second roof I made. The first one was done like the picture you linked here but, because of the thickness of the styrene, it ended up looking like a porcupine. Thanks, Dan PS. By the way, this is the basic look I was shooting for: link All I need now is to add the tires: TMP link auction |

28mmMan: "make a handful, a few floating docks, link them together and have a floating village :)" Well, I even bought a bunch of HO barrels that are really two parts, so I could make a couple of bridges like this one: link And I will do a few bridges on stilts too: link TMP link Dan TMP link |

Nice work Dan, very nice. Keep it up. I have made four variations for the original hull that you sent me. But I am till trying to find the time to cast them. I hope to get them sorted out over the next few weeks. Mike |

Four!?! Awesome. Can't wait to see the pictures. I'm sure they rock. Dan |

No pics at the moment as they are all in bits, ready to be put in a mold. I am a bit behind with loads of things at the moment, had a few health issues the early part of this year, which have seriously set me back on the new releases. But you will be pleased to know that there will be about twenty new releases going on the site before the end of this month. AT LONG LAST. And I should have some new sculpts back from the designer early next month. Mike |
