Well
.was going to start up 25mm stargrunt again, but thinking now with all the new 15's in sci-fi I'd jump scales, anyway, curious what the most popular basing standard for 15's in Stargrunt/other popular sci-fi wargames is? Also where can I find some neat 15mm armor(besides GZG) |

I use Pennies for infantry! Welcome aboard! Combat Wombat Khurasan Rebel Minis Critical Mass Games Micropanzer Old Crow Models These plus GZG should do you! |
John Leahy | 26 Jan 2011 8:03 p.m. PST |
I and lots of other folks use 1/4" flat washers. They are steel and you can get them almost as cheaply as pennies. link |
JRacel | 26 Jan 2011 8:09 p.m. PST |
Many of us use 3/4" washers since they are magnetic and we can line boxes with magnet sheets for storage. Only Warlock and John have the usual suspects covered. You could also look at the Bluemoon 15mm SciFi line. The figures are nice, but I am not a fan of their vehicles. As far as vehicles I have a lot of comparison shots up. The newer version have labels in the pictures for manufacturers. I plan to go back and do the same for all the others when I have time. Just look in the various folders. The grid in the pictures are 1cm square. Link: link Welcome to the 15mm ranks. Jeff |

Ditto on the 3/4" size, although I use LITKO plywood/flex steel bases. Individual basing is the way to go for most skirmish games out there. I'd also toss in the Bugs from Highlander Studios. Welcome to the Dark Side

I'd also toss in the Bugs from Highlander Studios. You had to remind me of those didn't you!!! Jeff |
Martian Root Canal | 26 Jan 2011 8:28 p.m. PST |
LOL! Eventually, Jeff, you and I will have enough Bugs to take over the world muahahahaahaha. |
Steve Hazuka | 26 Jan 2011 8:38 p.m. PST |
It's not the Dark Side! It is the one true scale

StarfuryXL5 | 26 Jan 2011 8:43 p.m. PST |
It's 60% of the one true scale. |

Brigade Models has some cool 15mm Sci Fi stuff too: link Jake |
John Leahy | 27 Jan 2011 5:44 a.m. PST |
Just to let you know the 1/4" washers are 3/4". Thanks, John |
Martian Root Canal | 27 Jan 2011 6:12 a.m. PST |
Thanks for that link, CPT Jake. I had not seen the Cimexian Bug vehicles before for some reason. I may have found my "armor" for my Highlander Bugs! |
Lampyridae | 27 Jan 2011 6:21 a.m. PST |
Don't forget Zombiesmith for 15mm Quar. There's also The Scene with a small but growing range. QRF also has some SF stuff. |
Lampyridae | 27 Jan 2011 6:23 a.m. PST |
Oh, and there's 15mm.co.uk for Rogue Trader-esque stuff. |

modern UK pennies have a high FE content, and hold on to magnetic lined boxes. |
Top Gun Ace | 27 Jan 2011 2:23 p.m. PST |
Just don't try to take any on a plane from the UK, since "ALL" weapons are banned from flights, including little toy ones

I am using fender/mudguard washers – I think 3/16" ID 3/4" OD. 15mm is awesome – but I must say the super cheapness encourages large buys which makes a depressingly large painting pile
. The best thing = terrain. You can actually afford pre-made terrain at $5 USD a building from JR Minis, for example. It also seems to scale with model railroad stuff as well

"You can actually afford
"
and afford to store
|
evilleMonkeigh | 29 Jan 2011 6:46 a.m. PST |
Ha, true about storage – my 15mm takes a shelf – 28mm takes a whole cupboard. I've noticed the space difference so much I've decided to get rid of my 28mm terrain and get paper Teerainlinx stuff instead! |

Funny storage story
I was living in Pensacola Fl and it was the summer of Star Wars and being introduced to the three original books of D&D. An older gentleman, I am going to guess mid 60's, invited a handful of the kids from the apartment complex to see his train collection. Four of us got there and his living room looked fairly normal
then he pressed his (garage style) remote control and the whole of the ceiling (including the ceiling fan) started slowly cranking down until the false ceiling revealed a complete train setup with the town of Mayberry, including Sheriff Taylor's house. Never forgot that moment
first experience with large scale hobby and a creepy old man, reminds me of the character from family guy picture YouTube link YouTube link but the train setup was insane
apparently he had trains in his other rooms, but thankfully we never went back, what an odd fellow. That false ceiling was quite something though, completely unexpected
it had a 2' margin around the border to allow access
"15mm takes a shelf – 28mm takes a whole cupboard" how about "it takes up my entire living room"? |

Spriggan also has a nice alien army in 15mm -- Spugs. Power armor instead of vehicles, tho. |

Yeah, Spugs are VERY cool! I have an army of them. Thanks, John |

All these links for 15mm Sci-Fi is making me think again about converting over my 28mm stuff. I play Sci-Fi and post-apocalyptic wargame settings as well as RPGs. I use the same 28mm figures for both. I see that 15mm has more great infantry, vehicles, guns and aliens. But what about creatures? I've seen a few giant ants, but what about giant spiders for Starship Troopers settings, or robots or mutant-like creatures (humanoid, animal, plant)??? If I can find more of these, then I think I can finally let go of 28mm. Please send any links to help a 28mm "heathen" convert!!! |
TeknoMerk | 03 Feb 2011 11:08 a.m. PST |
bumping thread. I was most interested in 15mm giant spiders, robots and mutants. Any links that someone can point out??? |
clkeagle | 03 Feb 2011 11:31 a.m. PST |
Lots of good robots and aliens (potential mutants) in the Blue Moon range: link (check both pages). Pulp-ish robots can be found at Hydra: link Battle robots – the Rebel Scourge ( rebelminis.com/alandve.html ) and Khurasan Mekanoids ( link ) are hard to beat. 15mm.co.uk has some as well: 15mm.co.uk/Automatons.htm What kind of giant spiders do you have in mind? Living or mechanical? Chris |
Ghostrunner | 03 Feb 2011 11:52 a.m. PST |
I would love to see something like the old Kryomek line in 15mm. Not just spiders, but more like the kind of technology-using bugs in the SST novel. If they made those, I'd be very tempted to convert my Mongoose SST armies over to 15mm. |
Ghostrunner | 03 Feb 2011 3:35 p.m. PST |
OK, now I've fallen to Dark Side, or at least am flirting with it. Ordered some NI troops and a vehicle from GZG to check them out. |
Farstar | 03 Feb 2011 4:26 p.m. PST |
15mm giant spiders, robots and mutants Spiders that were merely horrifyingly large in 28mm become GIANT when set next to 15mm minis. Check Megaminis, and the couple of examples in WotC's prepainted plastics. Robots: We've done this one before. TMP link TMP link TMP link TMP link TMP link TMP link TMP link Mutants: more than a few "human" minis are pretty far from normal. With the right paint job, Bob's Your (Mutant) Uncle. |

I would love to see something like the old Kryomek line in 15mm. This. Very much this. A while back I hacked up something along those lines using GZG Phalons and Khurasan Space Demon heads. Nice, but a) GZG only make one pack of 15mm Phalons, so there's not much variety, and b) it's not economically viable for Khurasan to sell the demon heads separately, so a large force would be expensive. :( |
Gorkathustra | 03 Feb 2011 10:50 p.m. PST |
I think I'm going to ahead and use FOW basing for my 15's(I don't even play FOW but I have dozens of bases for it somehow, got love trading)
I like the grouped together look, going to place an order from GZG for some Space Krauts soon as I scramble enough cash together to get them, and a grav tank too. |
TeknoMerk | 09 Feb 2011 5:03 p.m. PST |
Using 25mm spiders for Starship Troopers is a good idea. Ultimately, it would be good to gets spiders that represented warriors, flyers, brain and tankers from the movies and blaster/spitter bugs from the animated SST. Unfortunately, the Mongoose plastics are WAY too big to use
