In case anyone wants/needs ideas on how to make SF buildings that are not simply box-like, take a look at this:

Hope this helps those who want to scratch build, as well as those who may want to start or expand a range of SF buildings.

Those are great, seriously. Inspiring.

Top Gun Ace17 Oct 2009 5:51 p.m. PST

Those look very cool, especially the first set.

Thanks for sharing…..

Custer7thcav17 Oct 2009 5:53 p.m. PST

check your pm and email for some other pics of similar buildings.

Pictors Studio17 Oct 2009 6:34 p.m. PST

Thanks for posting those, they are great.

Christmas is coming up. All those presents in plastic clam shell and blister packs in weird shapes make for great starts for SF buildings.

Those are great, thanks. If anyone has more please share, always looking for good ideas.

The Ghosts Of Mars concept sketches are crazily better than the film. I wonder where it all went wrong? :) Star Wars Galaxies, on the other hand, looks like they just stole the building models from Anarchy Online. Specifically, they were wandering around in Tir.

IrrationalDesigns18 Oct 2009 9:33 a.m. PST

Those are inspirational. Think I'll see what I can do with that style…

Perhaps someone should forward these to the lovely people at GZG? ;-)

Hopefully Jon is reading the thread and seeing the links.

Nice images, reminds me of old-school 40K before the Gothic look came into vogue. I may need to try my hand at some of those.

I'm tempted to email some of these pics to Amera UK to see if they would be interested in vacuuforming them for the 15mm market. There's lots of inspiration in this one alone: picture

Javelin98,

I agree. That is a fantastic illustration.

I think that, whatever works on Tattoine, should work on a semi-terraformed Mars:

Exactly my thoughts Doc. Good old Oatmeal Cereal box buildings!

Cacique Caribe04 Nov 2009 4:59 p.m. PST

"Good old Oatmeal Cereal box buildings!"

Now, now. That would sound a bit blah. Is that really what they look like to you? Like oatmeal cereal boxes?

It was actually a lucky find.

I would love for someone to make and produce low-profile dwellings like these, for either ice or desert planets, where the wind is a major problem:

They could also work for structures on moons. Who knows? Maybe even the fantasy crowd could purchase them as hobbit holes, which would be about 15mm in a 28mm game setting!

What do you guys think?

Dan,
that link to the picture took a while to download, but man, sure was worth it.
Some very interesting ideas in there. Damn you.

Those low-profile buildings would also make snazzy alien designs. Critters from a planet that leant itself to that kind of structure (ie windy as all get out) would tend to build that way on other worlds too out of habit and aesthetics, the same way humans like box shapes.

Definatly set my mind going for some new products.

"The journey to Terra Nova from Earth would take nine years at the warp speeds attainable in that period. The SS Conestoga was commissioned for the task, and was specially constructed so that it could be dismantled on arrival to serve as homes and service buildings for the colony."

Okay…The Millenium Falcon is right in your face, and I found the Escape Shuttle from Alien, now where is Slave.1?

…where is Slave.1?

Hmm. I must try again in the morning. This late at night, I'm starting to get cross-eyed trying to find it.

I didn't see it either, but that does not mean it is not there, ha,ha!

Love the buildings Dan, and yes they did take stuff from Anarchy online.

Personally I think the new Mos Eisley is very neat and prosperous looking, hardly looks like a den of scum. Nobody would have new looking buildings or equipment outside where it can be stolen.

I hope to see a new building or two from your collection based on some these concepts.

And, if painted the right color . . .

I think, Slave 1 (or a ship with very similar style) is 'parked' towards the top centre – just to the right of centre is a cirular loading bay with a large green ship in it, look at the circular loading bay just below that – you can see the top part and cockpit of an orange ship – to me at least it's shape looks like Slave1.

Not a sketch, but it may inspire those wanting to lay out a few space settlement buildings:

Dan, I love how you're an encyclopedia of wargaming ideas! I really like all these buildings for their respective looks. I think combining the low profile domes with some of the aspects of the martian buildings and you'd have some wonderful Chewk fitting homes! The Domes being the little that's on the surface, while most of their cities are below ground, to match their semi-subterranean lifestyle.

Cacique Caribe25 Jul 2011 5:37 p.m. PST

Guys,

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make buildings look like they are partially buried by sand?

picture

Do you start with the buildings and make the dunes around them? Or do you make the dunes first and then make the buildings as if they are peeking through?

Thanks,

Dan
