(Apologies for the long post)

Guys, I am not a writer by any means, but this afternoon I found I could not contain the need to write this very familiar ("Bradbury-ish") tale . . .

---------------------------------------------------

Mars: First Contact (SF Storyline)

Contrary to popular thinking, Mars was a thriving and fertile planet until an unknown astronomical event a thousand years ago (perhaps a comet or asteroid) rendered the planet barren or nearly so. The air grew thinner and the weakened atmosphere caused most of the plant life to die off. The few plant species that did survive did so in tiny sanctuaries, such as in the deepest reaches of Valles Marineris, where the deep canyon overhangs prevented direct ultraviolet effects to the valley floor, except during the Martian high noon.

With the drastic destruction of habitat came the near-obliteration of all intelligent life on the planet. For millennia, this culture had reached a high level of sophistication, with cities, canals, temples and grandiose monuments. But it could not overcome by any means the chaos that followed "the event". Many considered it as punishment from the gods, for the gross arrogance they had come to display over their accomplishments.

"The event" nearly buried what had endured the ages. What little remained laid in ruins barely detectable from orbit.

But, as the masses died off, and the few remaining survivors found themselves victims of their own planet, small bands found refuge in the very same canyons and valleys that allowed the dwindling vegetation to survive.

The decline of their society followed a pattern similar to what happened in Easter Island (Rapa Nui) on Earth. With drastic weather changes and dwindling resources (though not as devastating as what happened on Mars), society became fragmented, wars ensued and few survivors remained.

And then came the first human colonists to the planet.

At first these human settlers, prospectors and terraformers did not even suspect that a sentient culture had once ruled the red planet. Then they began to find bones, bits of pottery and eventually, more apparent signs of cities and monuments. But wherever the humans went, they could not find signs of any still living creature on the planet, except for small patches of microscopic organisms barely clinging to life.

But, one day, a team was sent to explore the deepest reaches of the largest canyon ever detected in our solar system, Valles Marineris:

As other forms of life were found, such as highly resilient plants and simple arthropods, the hope grew that more biological discoveries would be made in the canyon.

But, as they continued their explorations and surveys along the valley floor and the cliff faces, additional traces of the past inhabitans were discovered. However, what surprised them most was the incredible state of preservation of these "ruins".

And then, without explanation, one day communication with the teams working the canyon was lost, and they were never seen or heard of again.

------------------------------------------------

Here are the Bradbury-ish image that inspired me to come up with my gaming background:

Those "Martian Chronicles" illustrations aren't all. Additional inspiration came from the many ideas for Martian ruins that TMP members provided me a while back:

And also from the fantastic alien vegetation you guys are always coming up with, such as these:

Valles Marineris is huge, so I am forced to think in terms of smaller figures. In this case, I've chosen 15mm.

For the prospectors/scientists in the canyon . . . well, that would be the GZG SG15-V10 Spacesuited crew (in light-duty vacc-suits – male and female, 8 assorted figures from 5 variants):

These other guys could play the part of a few rogue and armed human intruders scavenging among the Martian ruins, or they could be the initial security personnel sent in to investigate the disappearance of the prospectors/scientists that first came upon the valley "ruins":

And, when things really get way out of hand, these are the "tough hombres" called in to go in and settle things with the Martian survivors:

What do you guys think so far? Any additional suggestions?

Thanks!

PS. By the way, I have absolutely no idea what rules I would use for this.
And the next obvious question is who will make the cloaked and masked Martians:

I love those straw plants… both links.

I've lately been playing games… pulp, zombie, post apocalypse, and "regular" sci-fi… using the free Warlord 2085 (aka Skank Rules).

You might want to check them out.
skankgame.com/Downloads.html

I like them so much I've downloaded the rules & covers, got it all spiral bound with a vinyl back and a clear plastic front. Makes it lay flat and it's protected well. I'm pretty well hooked on them.

I think you need to make this a VSF game because modern satellites have have mapped the entire Martian surface. So, in modern times, they couldn't just be hiding there in the crater.

Other than that, it sounds like a fun game background.

jpattern207 Mar 2009 6:06 p.m. PST

CC, one of these days you have *got* to put on a convention game. Martian Chronicles, Pellucidar, Cave Wars, whatever.

I'll be there!

:)

jpattern207 Mar 2009 6:09 p.m. PST

And if anyone complains that "Mars isn't like that!" just tell then it's actually the planet Ares in some other system. (Because I'm sure they'll find FTL travel to other stars *much* more believable than they find an ancient advanced civilization on Mars. Hah!)

flooglestreet07 Mar 2009 8:43 p.m. PST

I think it is a superb setting. It is also believable enough for me. There is a strong enough case for criptids on this planet, I can see them on Mars. Damned unlikely, but close enough to engage my suspension of disbelief.

Cacique Caribe08 Mar 2009 12:12 a.m. PST

Thanks guys. Very kind of you.

I guess the question now is where to find figures that could pass for the cloaked and masked Martian survivors:

Those last links aren't working for me Daniel – but masked and cloaked Martian survivors – possibly freedom fighters? I wonder where to find those figures ;-)

Cheers

Ironclad sanwar for the cloaked and masked martian survivors

Aren't those Sanwar like 28mm or something?

I was hoping for 15mm options. Thanks though.

What about Emperor Palpatines Imperial Guardsmen for a start?

The Gray Ghost08 Mar 2009 5:31 a.m. PST

I think D&D plastic figures might be Your best bet
Xeph Soulknife and Scorpion Clan Drow Fighter come to mind.
but for the masks I can't even think of what to use.

The Gray Ghost08 Mar 2009 5:33 a.m. PST

Oh and I would go with a 50s style Pulp setting

More reinforcements for the "tough hombres" are coming out soon:

What we need now are suitable 15mm cloaked and masked Martians with alien weapons, like the conical bee-guns here (instead of recognizable pulpish ones):

Addendum to the story . . .

And then the same thing happened to the scientists who ventured into the Martian lava tubes around Olympus Mons, and the other three major volcanoes northwest of Valles Marineris:

As it once may have been:

Dunno why, but in both images the north pole should be to the left.

"The event" I describe in my tale above could have been very similar to this (the comet strike, 1:07 into this clip):

Ordered my 15mm Rebel Minis "Earth Force Marines"!!! Two packs of the infantry and one pack of the heavy weapons (just to start):

They will be the "tough hombres" that will be sent in to search/rescue the missing scientists.

My plan is only missing the "Martians". Hooded, cloaked, masked:

Can't wait to see what's next these days.

There are several fantasy lines that include roabed and cloaked wraiths and rangers. A little green stuff and some plastic rod might convert these easily into your martians.

Cacique Caribe12 Mar 2009 9:37 p.m. PST

I thought conversions at first, but then I decided to work on the figures I've just ordered and see if any of the new ranges in the work might be what this calls for.

I can hope, right? :)

CC

Cacique Caribe16 Mar 2009 3:27 p.m. PST

Man, that was badly written. I must have been half asleep. Let's try again . . .

I thought conversions at first. But before I start work on the figures I've just ordered, I wanted to see if any of the new ranges in the works fits the bill.

This wasn't a good first contact either:

I don't know how (yet), but I plan to build something like this, but smaller, for the ruins under the cliffs of Valles Marineris:

link
picture

Because of the cliff overhang issue, and how that may present accessibility problems for moving figures . . .

Do any of you have any suggestions on how to overcome that space problem???

Thanks.
