Ever since Dampfpanzerwagon shared the Jeff Carlisle link with me on another thread, I keep going back to it.

But I guess I had never paid much attention to these awesome Martian mask sketches:

Martians are Elves! ACK!

Cool illustrations. Those masks are nice. Who is going to make the minis? ;)

"Dark they were and golden eyed"

Wow. Hadn't heard that title in a long time!

Spoiler: link

By the way, I also like Whelan's work:

I like the Carlisle site too! I saved it as a favorite and I find myself going back to it also from time to time for ideas and inspiration. The Martian city is beautiful and the sketches are perfect. I'm thinking of ways to kinda mix these with the elves of Hellboy/Golden Army.

This is good stuff.

I'd buy those figures, they look like Exodites crossed with Tau

I guess the decline of such a society would be very similar to what happened in Easter Island (Rapa Nui). With drastic weather changes and dwindling resources, society is fragmented, wars ensue and few survivors remain, such as this cloaked and hooded fella:

These guys could play the part of the human intruders scavenging among the Martian ruins:

Of course, these SG15-V10 Spacesuited crew (in light-duty vacc-suits – male and female, 8 assorted figures from 5 variants), could play the part of the first contact humans:

Umm, in the drawings where he names the masks 'The Martian Chronicles' – is this perhance concept art for a remake of 'The Martian Chronicles' for TV? that would be great!

For a different version of a first contact scenario:

A very poor attempt at copying some of the flavor of those masks:

"Dark they were and golden eyed"

Wow. Hadn't heard that title in a long time!

Hadn't read that one, but that article makes it a story I need to track down. I have read a few others that followed the same vein, including one rather obscure tale set on Mars that sounds like the author had read this one, and Larry Niven's "The Locusts".

I don't know what it is, but I'm really attracted by most things Martian.

Maybe it has something to do with our family name (Martinez), or that I was born in the month of Mars (March/Aries) or, as someone once told me, that the planet Mars was very dominant on the day I was born.

Seriously, maybe it's all got to do with the cool books (War of the Worlds and Martian Chronicles included) and movies and shows I watched as a kid, and the Viking news reports I saw when I was eleven.

Are these other ones cool, or what?

I wonder if Jeff Carlisle is also the artist.
