Has anything new come out in giant worm miniature development since this topic was last discussed in March of 2004?
TMP link

I am hoping for suggestions on just the giant underground ones from the first and fourth films:

I guess the hardest thing is the four-part beak-like mouth: link

Suggestions?

I just had a Tremors I to IV mnarathon last weekend and was wondering the same thing. No answers though.

The beaky parts kinda look like warrior bugs from SST. Maybe some of those and greenstuff tentacles?

Cacique Caribe28 Sep 2006 9:10 p.m. PST

To those who are more 40K savyy . . . are there any similar 40K "bugs" whose mouths or claws could be ordered as bits and adapted?

CC

Cacique Caribe28 Sep 2006 9:25 p.m. PST

Are there any 40K bits that may be suitable for conversions?

Something like this? link
Or

Or, maybe the tips of some wicked-looking wings or something?

The Mongoose SST line I think is where you are headed with this custom job.

First, for the body, Burrower Bugs (2 for $25):

picture

For the mouth bits, I think some basic Aracnid Warrior Bug parts (legs) would get you close. That and some greenstuff:

picture

The boxed set gives you enough parts for 6 bugs, but you can order just one sprue (enough for 2 bugs) for $7 USD from Mongoose.

Not quite the right shape for the body, and you'll need to do something about the rows of teeth inside the mouth if you were to model one of these with it's mouth open. But I think it would be passable.

Red5angel29 Sep 2006 8:42 a.m. PST

CC the mouht would be fairly easy to sculpt, if you need help let me know. I could work on this while I'm doing my dune sandworm and do it in the same way.

Tippett Studios did the creature effects for both SST and Tremors so this isn't a surprise. ;)

Red5angel,

Thanks. Do you suggest starting with a wire armature or one using bits as the core?

CC

Red5angel29 Sep 2006 2:24 p.m. PST

depends on how big you want it, if it's over 1/2-3/4 inches thick I'd go with compressed tinfoil for the main body and wire armatures for the mouth pieces. Just make sure if you plan to have it cast that you use plyers to compress the tinfoil so it doesn't collapse.

Cacique Caribe29 Sep 2006 4:05 p.m. PST

This is long term planning . . .

. . . but I am thinking of making 2 full body and another 2 of the head section only, for personal use in 28mm gaming.

They would be one-of-a-kind models (not for manufacture) so conversions would definitely be the easier route.

Graboids are a basic ground troop/alien form I was looking to incorporate into my alien hordes. So in the very near future I will have this beasty sculpted out. The molding process will follow soon after, but I tend to work in stages, sculpt 5-6 and then mold them all at once. I have much less wasted product that way and I can control the mix better in single large batches.

But this form is one of my favorites and without a doubt will inspire me through the process.

PS
Although the end result is a different creature from the movie, my alien worm looks the same (well a mouth at both ends but other than that).

28mmMan,

Fantastic. PLEASE do keep us updated and show us the greens when ready!!!

I have wired up the worms already, so give me week or so to find the time to flesh them out. I am working out the molding angles right now so I can reduce the potential for bad undercuts.

Cacique Caribe20 Feb 2007 8:28 a.m. PST

28mmMan,

Will you be making a few bursting out of the ground, or are you focusing on full-length models of the worms?

you know the 'sandworms' from DUNE had a 'tripedal' mouth…where the graboid has a 'beak and then 3-claw-jaw parts that hinge and then the inner 'mouth tentacles'…(oooooohhhh, tentacles)….D&D has a large plastic purple worm that's not too bad and the smaller Reaper 'familiars' set baby purple worm looks a lot like a 'mini-dune/sandworm'….too…just like the Astra Marauders that Reaper and Wizards of the Coast both do…

I'm still 'pondering' on the 'AB's'…but with a little flex-sculpy or the airdry crayola stuff…and some GW and SST bug-bits…there's not much you CAN'T do about making your own 'graboid' types…and as far as 'authenticity' goes…remember the 'mixmaster' stuff???

THAT was part of one of the BIG issues in the series that the MIXMASTER 'mixed dna' (other than human supposedly)…into varients…(which is what 'mutated?' the graboids etc…to begin with??

So who's to say your 'mods' or mine…or anyone's…aren't 'mutants/mixmaster varients' that show up 'down the road'??

Right now, I'm focusing on collecting images and maps and details about PERFECTION the town..Like what is where…what did the inside of the Store, etc…look like for 'grid mapping'…(I did tell you about the link that showed the INSIDE of Burt's 'underground bunker'???

I can always email a copy if needed, if you can't find it…and then I have to find a decent fig to 'modify' into BURT with the BIG GUN anyway…(I looked at the GZG stuff, but want something more 'BURT-ish'…as far a 'civvies'…there is the discount hobby civvie set for 'victims/bus tours' stopping by…etc??? 8-)

DWW,

I think that Copplestone Castings, EM-4, TAG and others may have just the right militia-type figures that could be used for Burt:

I'd be curious to see what is suggested for Heather (Reba McEntire):

28mmMan,

These could give you some ideas on how to make two 28mm models of Graboids "bursting out":

Breaking the plane was it were, yes I had planned on that aspect.

Right now I am working on my master. From that I can modify the copies to whatever end I desire… head out with tentacles/tounge, open mouth view, and "palm tree" (death from below).

Cacique Caribe20 Feb 2007 1:10 p.m. PST

Wonderful!!!

28mmMan20 Feb 2007 5:11 p.m. PST

Now it goes without saying, I will not copy anothers' idea/property. But, that said, we are talking about a big leathery worm with mandibles. Not a milestone of design.

I will be providing several head formations to better represent my vision…and with clever positioning, the end user could easily make his/her worm look pretty damn close to the grabboid of legend.

Plenty of inspiration to be found in nature.

those man sized leeches from king kong are quite inspired also.

"those man sized leeches from king kong are quite inspired also."

28mmMan,

Since the moment you posted this yesterday, I have trying to find links to photos of those giant leeches!

Do you have any links?

CC

28mmMan21 Feb 2007 11:26 a.m. PST

Carnictis (Vile Meat-Weasel), a very difficult image to locate on the net…I tried and failed to catch a decent shot sorry.

But this is a great reference to the direction I am going. That creature with the extra bits could easily develop into a grabboid.

Sucks to be Lumpy the cook huh?

28mmMan21 Feb 2007 11:28 a.m. PST

I found several shots but I was unable to translate into a link sorry.

28mmMan,

Interesting. I see where you are going with this . . .

With a little GreenStuff, this might be modified into a Graboid worm:

Not sure how much it's helpful, but I'm using Heresy giant slugs as giant graboid … in 6mm battles

28mmMan29 Mar 2007 8:18 a.m. PST

The Rafm miniature is great as is. Be a shame to modify that beast. Just get some green/white/or gray stuff and sculpt away. :)
