Heedless Horseman to improve your knowledge of your 1/144 scale Sturmgeschütz IV (SdKfz 167) models read this : In early December 1943, Hitler, in discussion with his staff, ratified Guderian's proposal to adapt the superstructure of the Sturmgeschütz III to a panzer IV chassis. At the time, the Stug III had already proven its worth. it is more and more used as a mobile anti-tank gun, to the detriment of its infantry support mission. But the use of the Pz III chassis which serves as its base begins to present certain drawbacks: it limits the possibilities of mounting a piece of a higher caliber because of its lightness (the maximum reached being the 105 mm howitzer of the Stug 42) and although reliable, it does not offer the self-propelling qualities of the Pz IV. In addition, all the assembly lines of the Pz III chassis are reserved for the Stug III, which remains the only machine (plus a few Pz III M or N) still using this engine in combat. On the other hand, the Pz IV is then in full swing: it equips the vast majority of tank regiments, it is robust and powerful enough to carry all kinds of anti-tank or anti-aircraft artillery pieces (see Nashorn, Hummel, Mobelwagen, etc. ). Its use for the new Stug therefore has the triple advantage of simplifying the problems of maintenance and replacement of parts, of unifying the pilot's learning techniques, and of opening the way to new experiments with regard to the future of 'a chassis that gives complete satisfaction. The Führer, in order to have this self-propelled vehicle to equip tank units while waiting for the Panther to be available in sufficient numbers, orders that the first projects presented to him as of December 16. On this same date also takes place the demonstration of Panzerjäger IV (another "darling" of Guderian) whose qualities and line impress all observers. The Sturmgeschütz IV (SdKfz 163) then seemed to go almost unnoticed, but its entry into production received Hitler's approval, and began without delay at the Krupp-Gruson AG factories in Magdeburg –Bukkau. It may seem surprising that two weeks were enough to finalize the final draft, but the changes were all in all fairly simple and small. In order to adapt the body of the Stug III to the chassis of the Pz IV G, it was necessary to lengthen the structure by 46 cm and to raise it by 8 cm. The frontal armor was further increased from 50 to 80 mm, the side armor remaining 30 mm thick. An armored casemate for the driver was installed at the front left of the vehicle, and equipped with two periscopes (instead of a viewing slit) and an upper hatch; sometimes a 15cm concrete reinforcement was added to the front. The "Saukopf" (or pig's snout) cannon mask from the new Stug III Ausf G was chosen from the outset. Like its predecessors, the Stug IV received side "schürzen" plates against shaped charges, a magnetic anti-mine "zimmerit" coating, and later an MG34 or 42 machine gun on top of the combat compartment, behind an armored shutter. This installation, forcing the servant to be exposed during firing, was not satisfactory; On the other hand, the experimentation of a "Sturmgewehr 44" system with a curved barrel on a ball joint, for shooting from within, did not provide an answer to the demands of combat. Thus the project of a remote-controlled MG, adopted in May 1944, made it possible to equip the Stug IV, as well as the Panzerjäger IV and the Hetzer. From January 26, 1944, a study was planned for the installation of the Panther's 75 long (L / 70) gun on the chassis of the Stug IV and Jagdpanzer IV, against the advice of Guderian who thought that the 75mm L / 48 gun fulfilled all the necessary tasks. Hitler even ordered in July 1944 that the construction of the Pz IV be interrupted so that the chains could devote themselves entirely to these two machines. The development of the new version of the Stug IV was however abandoned in favor of the jagdpanzer IV L / 70, much appreciated for the ballistic qualities of its weaponry, but overloading the chassis of the Pz IV. As with most of the German army's materials, the construction of the Stug IV was divided between several factories. If the assembly took place in Magdeburg, the bottom of the chassis came from the firms Böhler from Kapfenberg, Krupp from Essen, etc., the armored structure was supplied by the Brandenburg steel industry and the cannon by Wimag in Berlin and Skoda in Pilsen. The production started slowly in December 1943, but increased during the year 1944, during which 1,006 units left the lines against 105 from January to March 1945. Known figures allow to estimate the number of Stug at 1,138. IV built on chassis of Pz IV AusF G then H. The Sturmgeschütz IV Weighed 23 t, and was served by four crewmen. Its larger cabin and more powerful engine presented an improvement over the Stug III, but it retained this lack of lateral movement of the gun which reduces its capacities, particularly in offensive combat. Like its predecessor, it equipped the independent battalions of Stug but also certain tank regiments, where it was most often in staffing in the 3rd battalion as transitional material. Characteristics Crew: 4 men (tank commander, gunner, charger / radio operation, driver). Weight: 23 tons Length: 6.70 meters Width: 2.95 meters Height: 2.20 meters Ground clearance: 40cm Engine: Maybach HL120-TRM, 12 cylinders, gasoline, 300HP Transmission: ZF-SSG-76 "Aphon" (6 forward gears, 1 reverse) Leaf spring suspension. The "Nahverteidigungswaffe" system of close defense was installed from April 1944. Internal communication equipment in the vehicle: Bordsprechanlage model 24 (specific to Sturmgeschütze), coupled to the radio unit. Internal speaker for L.S.G. (Fu) Type B. Radio equipment: FuG 16 SE-10 radio set, designed for the Sturmartillerie, comprising: a type 10 WS.h transmitter, and a Ukw.E.h. FuG 15 radio set: includes a second Ukw.eh receiver and an EUa converter (thus allowing the tank to become, without modification, a platoon or company command tank, the presence of the second receiver allowing the commander to be listening to two units at the same time!) Maximum reception range: 8km (stationary, and in radiotelegraphy, the range of the radiotelephony being even shorter). Two antennas (for each radio station) of 2 meters, are installed at the back of the casemate, on each side; generally only the FuG 16 antenna is deployed, a "simple" crew requiring only a transmitter and receiver. Thanks Paskal…more info than I need, though! :) 1/144 prepainted buildings. I have just received a couple of buildings made by ESCENOGRAFIA EPSILON, sold through Pendraken as imports. The Damaged Normandy house would not be out of place For Ardennes… I may add some snow to one! Nice building. I have also ordered some Spanish houses… for Italy, but not TOO 'Mediterranean', so might 'do' for much of rural Europe. Other buildings might also be useful to me… but, as imported items to Pendraken, many currently out of stock. I will be looking out for restocks. link |

Some u tube vids/links might be iteresting. YouTube link Nice haul of Shermans! Someone's painted models? |
hi EEE ya | 27 Nov 2021 10:33 a.m. PST |
Well done and thank you for the video on the U.S. Paratroopers. But I have the impression that it is above all the beginning of the battle and Bastogne which interests historians not the resorption of the salient, which is a great injustice. You know that a battalion of French paratroopers also fought in the Battle of the Bulge as well as regular Belgian troops. In April 1944, the BIA, (bataillon d'infanterie de l'air or "air infantry battalion" for you ) which joined in December 1943 their British and Belgian counterparts within the SAS brigade of the Army air corps, took the name of regiments: the 3rd and 4th BIA became respectively the 3rd and 4th SAS Regiments for the British and a little later the 3rd and 2nd Chasseurs Parachutistes regiments for the French. At Christmas 1944, the SAS paratroopers operated in the Belgian Ardennes. The men of the 4th SAS regiment (2e French RCP) lead the hunt for the Skorzeny commandos. It was during this operation that Captain Sasson Meyer, regimental doctor, was fatally wounded by friendly fire from an American patrol. On November 11, 1944 in Paris, the men of the 2e RCP received, from the hands of General de Gaulle, the Cross of Liberation. The 2e RCP, which has been wearing the amaranth beret since September, parades with the SAS badge sewn on it for the first time. For the 1/144 scale models, yes it's a beautiful, nice haul of Shermans and luckily all painted, when I was hoping to find certain types of shermans on this scale and presto it happened! A real miracle, Some of my friends will get me more because they no longer interest them … Ditto for "Megablitz rules" which are reputed to be impossible to find and which I found on the net the day I was going to give up! Now I would also like to find U.S and German infantrymen in coats.

Paskal You started a really useful discussion here and, today, I went through the last three pages. You have, so many times, told us of your latest additions to your armour, but we have not seen any photos of your work. This is such a shame. Even the simplest phone camera these days can match what I achieve with a digital SLR, with three floodlights and a massive tripod. Please show us anything from your collection. |

Pendraken do US figs in overcoats (Airborne but 10mm!) and German figs in overcoats and Winter kit. (Ardennes). |
hi EEE ya | 28 Nov 2021 11:17 a.m. PST |
@Heedless Horseman Yes I have already seen this when someone told me on this topic, it's tempting but I'm sure, it's too small ! @Deadhead, Sorry, but the photos of figurines and models,it was never my thing (and I must not be the only one in this case) and that is good, because for weeks my very old computer does not accept anymore photos from my old phone and I'm not going to buy myself another phone to take pictures, because moreover I still don't know how to put pictures on TMP and I must not be the only one in this case. Only once did I happen by miracle by doing a copy / paste of a photo copied from a website … I still do not understand how it was able to succeed ! And showing pre-painted models that you know better than me, I don't see the point … Yes I started a very useful discussion on TMP which I wish I had found when I started, I hope it will be useful for people wanting to do what I started. Now if you can point me to other brands offering 1/144 scale WWII models and figurines, that's all I asked for on this topic, thank you. |
Heedless Horseman | 29 Nov 2021 12:28 a.m. PST |
Why not try just 1 packet of Pendraken if not a large order? Just clean up fig base and loosely place on whatever Inf base you are intending to use, next to a tank.. and see if they will 'do'. I doubt that you will find Greatcoated figs from anywhere else at present time. |
hi EEE ya | 29 Nov 2021 2:02 a.m. PST |
Greatcoated figures, American or German, there are on ebay, but they are in resin and therefore too fragile to be used in wargames. I'll have to get a copy of Pendraken figurines to compare … |
Heedless Horseman | 29 Nov 2021 9:45 a.m. PST |
Resin figs in 10mm 1/144? Probably a bit too fragile… Pendraken are 'chunky' so a base would probable survive the inevitable 'drop' pretty well. |
hi EEE ya | 30 Nov 2021 1:56 a.m. PST |
Resin figs in 12mm either at 1/144 scale. I'm waiting for figurines from Pendraken so I can compare firsthand… |
Heedless Horseman | 30 Nov 2021 6:48 a.m. PST |
Have been unable to find on ebay. What Manufacturer are they made by? Just curious. Customers of Pendraken may have to be a little patient for a while. Their factory unit lost part of it's roof in a recent storm but sure that they will do their best. |
hi EEE ya | 30 Nov 2021 7:34 a.m. PST |
This morning I found in my mailbox: The 1/144 Scale Panzer IV Ausf H Dragon, no complaints for the moment, we will see once mounted. The 1/144 Scale Stug IV Early Production (because built on chassis of Pz IV AusF G) by Dragon, then the Stug IV built on chassis of Pz IV AusF H would be different and designated Late Prduction? What is the difference between the frames? In any case it is the only model of Estug IV that I know on this scale that is not metallic, too bad I don't have her skirts. The Jagdpanther S.Kfz.173 from CAN.DO really beautiful and different from those of Takara and designated for the "Fûhrer Begleit Brigade". But on the back of its packaging, there is another identical one designed for the "Fûhrer Grenadier Brigade"? For 1/144 scale resin figures, here are a few but there are many more on ebay, German, American, British, Japanese and Russian. auction |
Heedless Horseman | 30 Nov 2021 10:04 p.m. PST |
Could be wrong, but little differences in Stug IV chassis between PzIV G and H for 1/144 game models. J had different exhaust. Jagdpanzer IV often used a modified chassis… but a very different beast. Those Dragon Can Do Jagdpanthers are lovely models. As to the resin figs… I can use YOUR link. But… if I copy item title and paste into MY ebay… they do not appear. I think there are different ebays! I have encountered this before… having bought item from China using a link… but was unable to find seller again. Nice figures… may be fragile but printed tanks are often pretty resilient… not like moulded resin which is brittle. Myself, I will stick with Pendraken… I have several Hundreds to paint… sometime! |
hi EEE ya | 01 Dec 2021 12:19 a.m. PST |
This morning I found in my mailbox: Outland Models WWII Germany Armor Vehicle Sd.Kfz. 234/2 "Puma" with a second Turret for a Sd.Kfz 234/1? – Scale 1: 144. Unfortunately this is the only model offered by this brand because it is very beautiful. Indeed the first productions and last products of Stug IV, were differentiated maybe by the hull, not by the gun! Nevertheless fo the Ardennes in 1944, I would like to discover a "brigade" entirely of Stug IV! I don't have any 1/144 scale resin figurines, it's unusable for wargame at this scale. But I'm expecting Pendraken for December… Fingers crossed ! |
hi EEE ya | 03 Dec 2021 11:53 a.m. PST |
For those who are interested in this scale for the Second World War, my email address is loicohiniac@orange.fr |
hi EEE ya | 10 Dec 2021 10:49 a.m. PST |
This morning I found in my mailbox: The Revell reference – 03350 – Us Army WWII vehicle – Scale 1/144 – i.e. 62 Pieces to build two M8 Greyhounds, two M4A3s and two GMC CCKW 353. 6 very beautiful models ! |
Heedless Horseman | 10 Dec 2021 4:28 p.m. PST |
The Revell M8 Greyhounds are pretty basic but would benefit from stowage… tarps, etc. As I have several Takara and Arrowhead, I may sometime use the Revell M8s for 'Hollywood' Germans, alongside Revell M47 Pattons and Butler's Chaffees! I think 'Hollywood Movie' games could be 'Fun'…you can ignore the realities… as in 1960s movies… and just have a fight! lol. |
hi EEE ya | 11 Dec 2021 4:30 a.m. PST |
I have not yet paid attention to their defect, but now that you have told me that I will compare with other brands, otherwise Revell has only this reference on this scale? TMP link |
Heedless Horseman | 11 Dec 2021 7:26 a.m. PST |
Revell Germany only issued this set and a set of Cold War W German vehicles, (Inc, M47). They were the 'cargo' from LST models. |
hi EEE ya | 12 Dec 2021 3:56 a.m. PST |
Ok thank you. LST models? Now I would like to find rules from the 70s, the rules from those years are generally super original. |
Heedless Horseman | 12 Dec 2021 5:03 a.m. PST |
LST… Landing Ship Tank. The Revell kits were probably intended for Pacific theatre but vehicles usable for NWE. |
hi EEE ya | 13 Dec 2021 4:18 a.m. PST |
Yes. I'm still expecting 12 others vehicles and 24 figures this year and I'm ordering more in 2022 ! |
hi EEE ya | 14 Dec 2021 3:28 a.m. PST |
Heedless Horseman, I just realized that the reference Panzer Depot 1/144 WWII German Armored Car Sdkfz233 gray (8025C) is not in scale 1/144, but smaller? If you have any you can check it out to see is it the same for all their models? Thank you |
Heedless Horseman | 14 Dec 2021 4:13 a.m. PST |
I do not have any Panzer Depot items, so cannot help with that. I have aquired some Doyusha 1/144 Panthers, (one in winter camo),and a JagdTiger, which are very nice. |
hi EEE ya | 14 Dec 2021 11:40 a.m. PST |
|
hi EEE ya | 15 Dec 2021 2:21 a.m. PST |
Heedless Horseman, Doyusha 1/144 ? I can't find anything specific about this brand? I will need their complete catalog to know their complete range of WWII vehicles at 1/144 th scale. |
Heedless Horseman | 15 Dec 2021 3:25 a.m. PST |
No idea about catalogue. Bought as advertised by ebay seller… may be Dragon CanDo models? auction |
hi EEE ya | 15 Dec 2021 7:37 a.m. PST |
Dragon CanDo models? But yes that's it, I have some! I just received free samples from U.S. and American soldiers from Pendraken, they are very beautiful, and as their underfoots are thicker, they are of the same height as the Victrix Games figures which are magnificent. For example the Bazooka are the same length in both brands! |
hi EEE ya | 16 Dec 2021 7:12 a.m. PST |
Panzer Depot models look great, but they are not at 1/144 th scale but 1/150 th scale! |
hi EEE ya | 16 Dec 2021 9:10 a.m. PST |
Or there were differences in frame sizes between the Sd.Kfz. 233 "Stummel" and Sd.Kfz. 234/3 "Stummel"? |
Heedless Horseman | 17 Dec 2021 9:21 p.m. PST |
You posted that you had received a 234 Puma from a friend, although there was no manufacturer mentioned, so do not know scale. The 233 should be VERY slightly shorter in length in 1/144… hardly noticeable. |
hi EEE ya | 18 Dec 2021 12:06 p.m. PST |
Now the "puma" I have are Shapeways and Outland and are the same length … My Panzer Depot Sd.Kfz. 233 "Stummel" look great, but she is not at 1/144 th scale smaller than it should be, of 2 mm, it measures 38 mm long maximum ..! TMP link TMP link TMP link |
hi EEE ya | 23 Dec 2021 2:18 a.m. PST |
I received the WWII rules "Fast Rules" I like it because everything is there at 1 for 1 but handling infantry figurines at 1/144th scale at 1 for 1 risks becoming tedious because infantry figurines must mostly based on 1/1. For my sdkfz233 I was right because Panzer Depot wrote to me: "Now all our products are made by the 3D printing machine so the size is 100% 1/144 scale. So the items you bought are 1/144 scale, except this sdkfz233 winter camo model " |
hi EEE ya | 24 Dec 2021 9:57 a.m. PST |

A CG Dynamix 1:144 WWII US Soldiers at Rest (Seated). A CG Dynamix 1:144 German Flakpanzer IV "Ostwind" (3.7cm Flak 43)Camouflaged.
