Hello everyone,

What rules and what brands of vehicle models and figurines do you use to play WWII 1/144 scale battles?

And why ?

Thank you,

Paskal

Our group plays Blitzkrieg Commander with this scale of models and figures. My own collection has armour from Arrowhead, Cando, Trumpeter, Pegasus, Takara, Minifigs, Panzer Depot and Pendraken. Infantry are from Minifigs, Pendraken and the Blitzkrieg12 range that Bend Sinister used to sell and is, I believe, going to be marketed by The Baggage Train.
I find these rules easy to learn, the rule book has integrated army lists for all of the major and most minor forces of WW2 (no need to buy lots of expensive supplements).the command and control system adds an interesting random element, it plays at company or battalion level and doesn't overweight armour against infantry/artillery.
I have also played Battlegroup with these models; this is a more complex and slow moving set of rules, does require the purchase of a number of expensive hardback books if you want to cover the whole war, but has some interesting mechanisms for determining " victory" and is well supported by the authors.

Great Canadian Battles (Bruce Macfarlane), Kampfgruppe Commander 3, "O"Group…..Perrin Miniatures…some Minifigs..

I only started my collection on Sep 26, 2021, I already have a lot of things but I can't decide for which rule …

So I continue to buy models of vehicles to assemble units which will certainly be for a 1 for 1 rule unless I like Megablitz, but I'll see that when I have had the time to read it …

Careful, Paskal. That's how I wound up with a metric ton of micoramor collecting dust. grin

What a Tanker is one rules set I'm considering.

Others are the old Battleground and Tractics rules.

1/144th minis primarily, as mentioned above – mostly prepaints, and pre-assembled minis.

I would like to find rules from the 70s, the rules from those years are generally super original.

Thresher0112 Dec 2021 6:13 a.m. PST

Tractics will fit your requirements.

Supposedly, a new version is in the works if you can't find an old copy for a reasonable price.

I just bought myself the WWII rules "Fast Rules" because it appears to be one of the most accessible and simple wargame rule sets for World War II miniatures. Get playing fast and when one has hidden set-up and movement (ideally with a judge or at least the defender notes unit positions on a sketch map), then the game can be more exciting and realistic than typically complicated games that micro-manage too many details.

Its medium complexity as far as I am concerned. Its a simple simulation so expect to have to turn the turrets of the AFV's to represent real world formations. It's 1:1 with a real ground scale. Great if you want your games to look like real battles. No points system as they don't work for real world terrain.

It seems that the WWII rules "Fast Rules" appears to be one of the most accessible and simple wargame rule sets for World War II miniatures. So it's fast game which makes it more realistic compared to reality.

UshCha13 Dec 2021 7:50 a.m. PST

I would be suspicious of them. But make your own decision, read a few history books and then run scenarios similar to them and make your own mind up.

Gary Guygax was no simulator but a games writer. That does not bode well if you want a decent simulation. All the fast play rules I have seen lack the depth or too fundamentally flawed to to make them interesting simulations in my opinion.

Paskal Supporting Member of TMP13 Dec 2021 12:11 p.m. PST

It makes sense that WWII rules "Fast Rules" lack depth since they are fast, but the fact that they are fast makes them realistic even if imperfect to reflect reality, but I will see in use.

And like – whatever reissued – it's a rule from the 70s, I should like it unless it has been changed too much.

Well now I would find another one if it doesn't suit me …

I have Megablitz, but I don't think I will like it, and anyway I don't have time to read it at the moment .

I just realized that the reference Panzer Depot 1/144 WWII German Sdkfz233 armored car gray (8025C) is not at 1/144 scale, but smaller ?

It is the same for the other references of WWII vehicles of Panzer Depot ?

thank you

Panzer Depot models look great, but they are not at 1/144 th scale but 1/150 th scale!

Paskal Supporting Member of TMP16 Dec 2021 9:10 a.m. PST

Or there were differences in frame sizes between the Sd.Kfz. 233 "Stummel" and Sd.Kfz. 234/3 "Stummel"?

Paskal Supporting Member of TMP19 Dec 2021 4:01 a.m. PST

Yes, I am not going to dream, it is too small. I am waiting for a CG Dynamix M24 Chaffee tank and I will thus see if it is bigger than the one I have from panzerdepot, if it is the case it will be careful with Panzerdepot models.

Paskal Supporting Member of TMP23 Dec 2021 2:16 a.m. PST

I was right because Panzer Depot wrote to me: "Now all our products are made by the 3D printing machine so the size is 100% 1/144 scale.
So the items you bought are 1/144 scale, except this sdkfz233 winter camo model ".

I received the WWII rules "Fast Rules" I like it because everything is there at 1 for 1 but handling infantry figurines at 1/144 th scale at 1 for 1 risks becoming tedious because infantry figurines must mostly based on 1/1…

Paskal Supporting Member of TMP24 Dec 2021 9:21 a.m. PST

In any case, the M24 Chaffee from Panzer depot and exactly the same length and width as the M24 Chaffee from CG Dynamix!

O Group and I Ain't Been Shot Mum. One battalion level, the other company level. Both have good emphasis on command and control, the impact of leadership and the challenge of trying to overcome the problems of battlefield friction. I've found O Group works particularly well in 1/144. I've been using the Victrix range, which I really like.

I finally found, for the moment The WWII rules "Fast Rules" is very good and it's 1 for 1 without limit of numbers so it's fast to play!
