Just watched Animal Planet's "Mermaids: Body Found": link
link I thought it was an entertaining fictional "documentary", all centered around the "bloop" NOAA sonar signal that was heard and recorded in 1997, but it made me wonder . . . A) Has anyone has ever converted a regular 15mm figure into a fish-tailed mermaid or merman? Got any before and after pics? B) Does having a fish tail on a figure make the figure more difficult to manage on a gaming board? Or do you prefer a creature that is depicted walking on legs on the bottom of the sea (like Hellboy's "Abe Sapien", or the creatures some call "Deep Ones")? Is that just so you can play out-of-water raids on coastal people and boats? C) How does one manage the vertical space aspect of an underwater game? Do you put swimming figures on some sort of telescopic stand? Would that sort of basing be practical to use with 15mm? From other interesting depictions:

Well, I lean towards an odd hybrid after seeing this picture:
Yes, that dolphin has 2 sets of ventral fins, and we know that the bones in ventral fins are the same as the bones in arms and hands. Mermaid with big fish/dolphin tail, arms and legs. |

I saw pics of an underwater James Bond game at some convention. They used aquarium plants and toy sharks, and some trenches dug out of styrofoam. I think they used 3inch action figures mounted on telescoping rods for the minis. |

WAY out there!!! But, as silly as the "pseudo-scientific" report was, the whole time all I could think about was how to use the premise for SF gaming purposes. Dan |

Far a species that is no psace faring, I would lean to the tail look. For space faring species, i would go for the bi or quad -ped look. head can be wither humanoid or sea creature. In my Distant World battles Army lost I went with three army list options. Aquids (bi-peds) Mermen and enhanced intelligence sea creatures. For the space combat army list I used fewer options. Just my concepts. |

If they did exist
would serving them with fries and slaw at seafood eateries be considered cannibalism ? |
Lion in the Stars | 02 Jun 2012 10:53 a.m. PST |
Only if merfolk were considered human. otherwise, they'd be bushmeat. And there are some places where cannibalism isn't illegal

YouTube link I cant believe no one linked Hannah Mermaid. She is a professional mermaid that does open ocean work, can free dive with no gear to like 100 feet, hold her breath for 5+ minutes and swims with all sorts of sea life. Dressed in an awesome looking mermaid tail and not much else. No goggles, no weight belts and no scuba gear. Youtube her! |
