HI I have an idea of making some moon wargame terrain. Maybe some of you have seen my 1 square feet terrain tiles on my blog.

So my moon tiles will be made on 1 feet cork tiles glued to custom cutted mdf boards. I am wandering are there any inspirational pictures of moon or asteroid terrains in 15/28mm scale already done by some wargamers. Nick |

You couldn't go too wrong with the craters from GW or Pegasus. |

Im thinking of doing something similar – using a 6 foot circle cut out of MDF, and build the surface / craters up with expanding foam. Any unit that moves off the edge of the circle – goes to the dark side of the moon, and will re-appear at the opposite side on the roll of a dice. Makes for interesting flank marches. |

You are going to love this, starting 1:50 into the clip: YouTube link Here's the entire show (look at 4:30 into it): YouTube link This weird video looks like crazy fun: YouTube link Enjoy! Dan PS. A quick search with keywords like "lunar landscape", "moon landscape", "lunar surface", "lunar base" etc., will get you some really awesome pics like these: link |

To make simple craters similar to the ones from GW and Pegasus, use the following method. You will need a flat surface eg game tile, thick card, MDF etc, cut to shape if you like. A tube of water based acrylic decorators caulk in a skeleton gun and a cup of water and some sand, fine ballast, etc. First mark out the circles for your craters to the desired diameter. Cut the nozzle of the caulk tube to about 10mm. Gun the caulk around the pre marked circle so that you have a circle of caulk. Wet your fingers with the water and keep them wet. Using your index finger and thumb work the circle of caulk up into a ridge. Thumb on the inside works best. Then using the caulk again radiate lines out from the circle of varying lengths to create a sunburst effect, and again work these lines into ridges. When dry and glue sand a ballast in and around the sunburst to taste and paint. It may take a bit of practice to get the "flow" of the caulk right (I'm good with a skelly gun, used one in my job for years), but it's not that difficult. The effect is very similar to the GW and Pegasus craters for a fraction of the cost, about £2 per tube in the UK and one tube would cover a 6 x 4 table completely with craters, and once you get the hang of it they take literally minutes to make. |

If your looking for inspiration then check out our lunar mat.
link We used an image NASA had of the actual moon. This mat is scaled to 1/300 scale. It would work for 15mm but if your going to build your own then keep in mind this is 4 feet wide. Those craters are HUGE. The big one is probably a foot more more in diameter. Larger in 15mm. |

These are neat images, showing the use of craters as bases:

Grey sandy desert base, some rocks painted to match, and some GW or Pegasus craters, maybe both to mix it up a bit, and you're pretty much set. Maybe to add additional texture, buy some Liquitex texture gel from the local art supply store. If you live near a Micheals, Jo-anne Fabrics, A.C. Moore, or Hobby Lobby you can pick up a 40% of coupon off the internet easy. Just use the gel as the adhesive for the sand in place of the standard whire glue. It's sticky enough and it gives it a good "rough" look. |

Nick (SirFjodin), So, what did you decide? Are you going to make your own craters or buy some ready-made? Dan |

Have you checked out the recent film "Moon" by Duncan Jones (2009), has some some superb lunar landscape shots. URL YouTube link |

The makers of VOID have inexpensive sets of resin moon craters. Though I'm not sure with them getting all changed around into Urban Mammoth if that survived into their catalog. |

2 Cacique Caribe WOW! Now I need to buy some moon buggies :) |

Thoughts, since you are looking to space save and such, make a baseline moon scape with only tiny craters
make a large crater that you can overlay anywhere on your tile (useful for bomb crater on other boards :)
make a few installation/building pods that you can overlay anywhere on your tile (useful for science pods on other boards, perhaps dealing with outbreaks)
etc. make more little items and you can create new moon tiles with a bit of handwavium :) |
