I just found some old Games Workshop craters in the garage. Two A4 sized moulded plastic sheets that will be enhancing my 15mm scifi terrian sometime soon. They'd be perfect for lunar landscape as well.

(Major Disaster)26 Oct 2011 9:26 a.m. PST

Cool! Forgot about the GW craters. I'm looking to make some craters from scratch. Probably with Paperclay or Sculpy. Already made rock formations from scrap styrofoam.

Spartan…how about a yard or two of rock print fabric?

This would make a fun alien surface, like the jungle floor on Pandora (Avatar) with the bioluminescence.

Hit your local fabric store and I am sure you will find something to meet your needs.

Good looking minis by the way :)

Thanks 28mmMan.
Good find on the rock print fabrics. I'll check into it at the local JoAnn's

Nice work

Agreed with everyone elses comment about the mat – the figures and vehicles look great but I'd love to see some sharper images :)

Very nice looking forces.

Is the little Huey droid produced by someone, or is he a custom job?.

Looks just like in the movies.

There are some great options for lunar, or alien surfaces.

Don't forget the latest release from Hotz. If I recall correctly, they can adjust the size of the lunar craters for you too, to match your forces, as desired.

The bottom pic of the fabric would make a pretty sweet "space" camo. Looks like a psychedelic pea-dot.

Huey is a GZG robot… he comes packed with WALL-E and an R2-D2, I believe.

We have a lunar pattern for our fabric mat line. Why not play on the actual lunar surface?

Nice set of figures – interesting to see what you think of Gruntz.

May I ask who makes the armed space suited figures? Are they the GZG ones link

as I have the civilian versions (i.e. no weapons) and am fed up of them getting killed so need to beef them up a bit grin

I love the Zuzzy game mats but shipping to the UK kills the product stone cold dead, 28mm Man hit on a cool idea about using patterned fabrics for a base mat and then I thought to myself why not leatherette it's durable and textured and you can paint (dry brush) it just like a Zuzzy mats and a fraction of the postage price. So i just ordered a meter for £7.50 now thats what i call good thinking and a cool deal… zac

The armed GZG astronauts are quite nice too.

Just wish they had more pose and weapons varieties for both the heavy and light vacc suit troopers.

28mmMan26 Oct 2011 2:19 p.m. PST

As mentioned above there are also the Hotz mats

To make quick craters I have a fun project that comes with the potential for fumes and toxic goo!

Take piece of standard compressed styrofoam, white glue to a foam core piece or a CD, rough cut and shape to create the ring shape, and then (I do not recommend you do this around kids, pets, or indoors…seriously) gently spray the outer edge of the ring with $1 spray primer.

Depending on the brand, results will vary…but go slowly as the accelerants within the spray primer that allow the media to set quickly will cause the bonds that hold the styrofoam together to retard.

It stinks…the kind of stink that reduces brain cells…so again…no kids, pets (especially birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish)…outside if you can.

Anyway the primer will dry and the crazing will stop, leaving interesting small pits and hollows.

Have an old spoon and a throwaway bowl ready.

Then look to the inner ring of the crater…same routine but allow the primer to pool a little…use the spoon to press the softening foam into shape, scooping out the excess into the bowl. Let this dry.

A simple brush on application of house latex or white glue slurry will seal the crater and allow spray paint for primer if you like or even texture paint.

PS
Brake cleaner and WD-40 are the most fun to use for this sort of toxic project…it acts just like the Alien acid blood on metal…but this needs to dry overnight…if you try this go slow if you want anything left…remember, like acid…you are warned…but it is so cool :)

28mmMan26 Oct 2011 2:51 p.m. PST

The SFX depart for Alien used styrofoam, WD-40 or acetone, and baking soda (under in the wires) for this bit

6 man squad. Are you using Gruntz rules?

Mako1127 Oct 2011 9:56 a.m. PST

Thanks for the info.

(Major Disaster)28 Oct 2011 7:45 p.m. PST

@SirFjodin

Yes, I patterned the squads for Gruntz. Hope to get a game in soon.
