I want to build some lunar terrain for gaming. I already have structures, so I'm particularly interested in craters and ridges.

The GW crater set has lots of these, in various sizes:

Amera also has a few:

Hope this can get you started.

Someone used to produce a really large one, and a couple of medium sized ones, out of white, styrene plastic, that were quite nice.

The larger one was about 7 – 8" in diameter, or so, while the smaller ones were about 3" – 5" in diameter, if memory serves correctly.

They were very nice, realistic looking craters, and would be excellent for hiding troops, and/or vehicles in them.

Of course, if you want to make your own . . .

For lunar, I would cut an irregular circle opening, and use that as the floor of the crater. Then I would cut 6 or 7 irregular "rays" or "spokes" about a couple of inches long, lift them up to create the lip and them prop them with more cork so they stay lifted 45-60 degrees up.

Then brush coat with a straight PVA glue (this will make it much more durable). After dry, brush on a generous amount of watered down wood filler, prime black and then drybrush.

That way you can make them as wide as you want.

Most of the craters are many miles across!
Is this for a sci fi pulp game with craters as kind of natural foxholes?

"Most of the craters are many miles across!"

I know that 26"L x 6"W x 3.5"H is not miles wide when it comes to 28mm miniatures, but I made two such pieces that I planned to use back when I had my Pig Iron infantry figures.

They were made with 1/4" mdf for a base and then layered with contoured expanded polystyrene (blue board) foam.

Both pieces are roughly semi-circular, which means that they can provide you over 52" of crater lip.

I don't think I will ever use them now.

Aluminum pie tins. Flip upside down crunch them down and paint them up.

You can buy them at any grocery store, empty or filled. If you like pie buy several and pig out then make craters.

tabletop warrior is right. I think youll like the homemade craters better than any commercially available.
Especially being able to say, :I made them myself" when your gaming buddies oogle them.

CC beat me to the punch. Anyway, I've seen these sheets in person, and they're rather impressive.

I made a crater board by drilling 2" and 3" holes in a piece of 5mm MDF backing with cardboard and building up the edges with plastic wood. Texture with PVA and sand then paint.

Thanks for the pie plate tip, tabletopwarrior, and thanks for thePlastruct PS-180 lead Cacique Carib. Thanks all for the interest. This is a pulp space opera game so I'll use a lot of craters. Also, I am going to have to find a light grey felt mat.

Also, Detailed Casting Productions have some temporary and permanent lunar habitation modules for 25-28 mm figures.

Mugwump31 Dec 2008 6:42 a.m. PST

Armorcast has some bubbling lava craters…they may be worthwhile to show some energy weapon hit.

Some great stuff here. Jokingly I'd suggest going to the NASA site and look at all their faked photos for ideas. ;-)

Top Gun Ace31 Dec 2008 12:41 p.m. PST

Nah, those don't look real enough…….

blackscribe31 Dec 2008 4:08 p.m. PST

Top Gun Ace, the gaming club I used to belong to had a bunch of those. They were pretty cool painted up.

Top Gun Ace01 Jan 2009 4:15 p.m. PST

Sorry for the confusion. I meant the faked NASA photos…..
