If so, this might be a good place to start:

auction

I've just placed my order, so I won't get to see them for a few more days. I may need to glue two or three of them together for added strength.

Anyway, I hope they are polystyrene* or some other plastic that will take super glue easily, because I plan to add bits of Plastruct and Evergreen polystyrene to them.

This is the rust-bucket look I hope to achieve on a couple of them:

And, when all is said and done, this is where they will play . . .

What do you guys think?

* The ones that actually say they are polystyrene are sold in quantities I can't afford at the moment.

LOL!!!

You crack me up. I knew there would be a genius in the group who would catch on to that little detail. :)

Hmm.

A bit big to navigate some of the flooded, but silted-up and debris-filled, avenues of major cities:

I wonder if some of the smaller Lego hulls here might work better:

Any Lego enthusiasts out there that might know?

Dan

Gaz004507 Oct 2011 2:05 p.m. PST

I found the Lego rowing boats really useful……

With 20mm figs of course but they'll scale well with 15mm too…..

Littlearmies07 Oct 2011 3:42 p.m. PST

Could you adapt Gary Chalk's templates from Wargames Illustrated 183 for the hull? Or at least adapt the contruction method?

Cacique Caribe07 Oct 2011 5:32 p.m. PST

Gaz (Gary),

OMG. Now THAT'S what I'm talking about. Those look awesome!

Any additional tips on how you did the conversions? Did you use balsa, styrene or something else to make the changes?

Thanks,

Dan

Gaz004508 Oct 2011 1:50 a.m. PST

These were fairly easy and 'rough & ready' mods, bits and pieces from the 'spares box', balsa decking for the open deck (centre of pic), pieces from a 1/600th destroyer (?) for the decking on the 'cruiser' type with oddments of plastic packaging etc and card decking internally to mask the Lego lugs inside with a tarpaulin truck cover from an Airfix GMC truck……
Still working on the bigger Lego hull after my 2 year old son tried 'remodelling' it!! (Essentially a small naval vessel for inshore patrolling with a gun turret and several AA cannon…..plus a cargo carrying conversion-different superstructure etc. Will post when more complete!

Gaz (Gary),

I went ahead and grabbed a few on eBay. I hope mine turn out half as nice as the ones you did.

Wish me luck!

Dan

Gaz004510 Oct 2011 8:11 a.m. PST

Good luck that man!
What I really like is that the Lego boats allow for the 'depth' of the boat- depending on where you position the deck inside the hull, you're inspiring me to restart my 'pirates'…..

I have just 'found' my balsa stockpile/hoard so I can restart my 'shipyard'……plus bits from the ever growing 'spares' box.

If you need cheap armament (AA cannon etc) check out the Really Useful Guns range from Irregular Minis…(15/20mm).

Just a suggestion Dan.

If you were to layer two or three thin hulls one inside the other, then panels cut from the external hell in squares with a scalple would both a) reveal the skin of the hull beneath and b) provide some square panels to stick back on to other areas giving a patched, distressed hull look that might be what you're aiming at.

John,

You are a genius!!!

I got my set of 25 banana (split) boats today. Can't wait to start work on them.

I'll try to post pictures soon of what I do to them.

Would this "MP15DC CAB ATLAS HO Scale" look out of place as the boat pilot's "box" (forgive my ignorance of naval terminology)?

Thanks,

Ideal imho, for the bridge/bridgehouse, mount transverse and position a ladder each side to the doorways and its done!
Getting a uniform look to windows and fittings has always been the challenge with this scratchbuilding lark, check out the hardware store for little washers to represent port holes…..every ship should have one!!

Cacique Caribe12 Oct 2011 11:38 a.m. PST

Definitely port holes! I haven't found washers that are that small, so I bought two hole-punchers (one with regular round holes and one for tiny ones) just for that purpose. I'll punch out the smaller hole first when I get started.

I may need to buy two of those cabins, and do a little surgery so I can have doors to each side of the bridge.

I hope the roof is removable. I would like it to slope to the sides (or add a new flat roof of my making), as in the first picture in this thread, plus be able to take it off when moving figures inside.

These pilot houses are nice, but a little pricey:

auction

What do you think?

Dan

Gaz004515 Oct 2011 12:49 a.m. PST

The deck houses for 13 bucks seem OK- the others are a tad expensive (US Ho scale is approx 15mm I think?) ……
Personally I wouldn't chop those rail cabs about too much -maybe remove the non-door wall to join 2 and just leave more 'open bridge' around them for a 'covered wheelhouse & bridge wings' effect…..less work and less chance of wasting/damaging the pieces….
I found some washers small enough for 20mm builds (and with the help of my 2 yr old son dismantling his toys we found some tiny washers suitable for 15mm -about 4mm across….)

Cacique Caribe15 Oct 2011 9:20 a.m. PST

That sounds great. Let me see what I come up with this weekend. I will be taking pictures to post.

Thanks so much. Great suggestions.

I found a bunch of HO scale boats/ships (the slightly larger size will allow a bit more miniature movement on the deck space) but they were expensive to say the least.

$100 is about average

Here is one that is expensive but shows the pieces that might help in the build up process.
