You know, one thing I have often wondered about with any post apoc /zombie / end of the world game is all the people on oil rigs, out at sea etc – especially military – surely until they dock, they'd avoid the worst? I can 'sea' boats being a big factor – until the fuel runs out, but sailing ships and smaller craft – with just off shore floating enclaves – or oil rigs being good 'strongholds'. I think for the moment pirates use the smaller craft – they may have a slightly bigger yacht size craft as a 'base' ship – given pirates, I'd suggest any old diesel run fishing boat might do you. |

A post-apocalyptic survivor colony at sea would be based around one or more USN nuclear aircraft carrier. Assuming that they don't use the aircraft and munitions blasting an island safe zone, most US military vehicles are configured to run on JP5 or JP8 (jet fuel) so the fleet oilers attached to a carrier group could keep an operation running for years if used conservatively. What Dan's photos show are coastal fishing vessels. I'm not sure who makes those. If 15mm is the scale, there are some Great Lakes "Lakers" freighters in HO scale that should work. Wyatt |

Yep. Craft for coastal travel/raids and island hopping, for the most part. Dan |

As for the previous pics at the start of the thread, any old fishing boats, smaller commercial boats, a bit run down and rusty would be ideal, but I can't search for pics as I'm stuck at work. |

Great idea – especially using a large vessel/conglomoration of ships as a floating base, with smaller vessels to fish/raid/explore – sort of post-apoc Vikings |

I have to agree with Kyoteblue. Fuel will be a problem in short order. Not the raw quantities at first, but the support infrastructure of moving and loading it. Sail seems the most likely form of propulsion, and fiberglass sailboats with wooden masts are electronically very stealthy. But properly rigged, even that sand-bagged trawler in Dan's first pic could be propelled by wind. Liking small craft or not, they have been the craft of choice for successful pirating since the golden age. If I were developing a trans/post SIOP adventure I would use a lot of small craft like RHIBs or 40-60 foot glass racers. |

Why don't the various countries ( ie nato ) just sink the bloody things? |
Lion in the Stars | 07 Sep 2010 10:08 a.m. PST |
Because the rules of engagement don't permit it, and the various militaries involved don't write those – their politicians do, and politicians are very sensitive to media involvement. Blasting a fishing boat means killing people who may not actually be pirates (that day), but just trying to feed themselves. Bad press = dead careers, if not jail time for the one shooting. They court-martialed the captain of a carrier who 'ran over' a fishing boat (impacted about halfway down the side) with a cargo of 5000lbs of C4. Fortunately, the explosives didn't go off. |

Frederick: "sort of post-apoc Vikings" My thoughts exactly! "Post Apocalyptic Vikings" has a nice ring to it. Either that or as "Pirates of the Post Apocalypse". Dan |

>there are some Great Lakes "Lakers" freighters in HO scale that should work. Just looked at those – $300-400 for a kit (granted they are up to 6' long) – ouch! w. |

I wouldn't look at Great Lakes ships. They're actually larger than about half the ocean-going freighters out there! |

Ok mate. I will get some cast when I go to the workshop, I was not going to release them yet, not with out the figures. But these are taking longer than expected. But I am sure people can make use of them. Mike |

Hobby Lobby has featured some trawlers made of wood from China that would fit well with 28mm figures. They'll do for pirate vessels. They were on sale at 50%. I bought two. |

Our Marine Department has four 1/100 scale nautical models (2 tankers and 2 freighters). I've been trying for a while to figure out how to get them and then convert to gaming models. I almost had them when they moved floors, but the manager decided to keep them. Maybe next time!!!!! |

QUESTION: Are there any screencaps or images of the pirate boat from the 1998 film "Six Days Seven Nights"? You know the one I'm talking about, the one that shoots the cannon straight up and blows itself up: picture picture picture I would love to build the actual boat, for 15mm. So any pics of the full-size boat are greatly appreciated. Dan TMP link |

How does one go about making something with these curves? picture If anyone knows about this ship, could you tell me if a template was used to make the sides taper up that way, at such an elegant angle? I mean, come one, how do you guys succeed in making such cool and realistic-looking boats??? Here's another set with really cool angles, but no idea if a template was used to make those angles fit together: link Thanks, Dan |
