It might be the medications, but what do you guys think of this crazy idea …

If I cut these echo toy microphones like rings, could the sections pass for spaceship parts:

ok, very nice idea. Thanks

malleman26 Aug 2011 4:57 p.m. PST

I like the idea. Also, Target usually has some in the dollar toy section.

infojunky26 Aug 2011 5:17 p.m. PST

I am seeing a lot of potential there…….

Grumpy Monkey26 Aug 2011 5:19 p.m. PST

Certainly a better use than their original design that is for sure

War Monkey26 Aug 2011 5:39 p.m. PST

You know as I look at it more it could make for a rather large engine section too! depending on it's scale, battle field junk.

Good spaceship engine as well.

Dan you are going to make your children cry, leave their toys alone :), yes it has potential for scratchbuilders/converters.

Dropzonetoe Fezian26 Aug 2011 6:47 p.m. PST

Seemed to have gotten turned around in my posting here…

Anyways,

This worked for me over in Iraq – half a water bottle and some printed textures I found on the web.

Sundance26 Aug 2011 7:54 p.m. PST

Very cool, dropzone.

Wellspring27 Aug 2011 5:59 a.m. PST

Best terrain idea I've heard in a while!

Cacique Caribe27 Aug 2011 9:51 a.m. PST

Blame it on the pain killers!

Like DZT may be suggesting above, Quonset buildings could be possible too, if we cut the microphones down the middle!

I wanted to do a downed craft with some over growth vines and such, just for a terrain effect and I was going to kit bash some 1:100 military aircrafts. now I'm thinking this would make for a nice downed craft add some wings a little of this, a little of that. oh yeah I can see it now.

Cacique Caribe28 Aug 2011 10:00 p.m. PST

LOL

And without all the guilt attached to cutting up a perfectly good model too!!!

Dan

War Monkey29 Aug 2011 5:50 p.m. PST

Oh Yeah, couple of well placed trees and a skeleton or two laying on the ground.

Cacique Caribe29 Aug 2011 6:41 p.m. PST

You mean like this?

A large enough ship but not too large, with panels missing and an exposed deck or decks so you can game through it not just around it, works for me.

War Monkey29 Aug 2011 11:50 p.m. PST

Here's a thought, Who said it has to crash on dry land or a desert? a swap or marsh could be cool too, or a jungle, maybe a plateau or a sea shore.

Cacique Caribe30 Aug 2011 7:13 a.m. PST

Good point! I would pick any of those.

Love the Smugglers Camp C/C !! Ever since I saw that episode of "Enterprise", I wanted to do something like that !! thumbs up

Cacique Caribe30 Aug 2011 9:26 p.m. PST

Glad you like it!

Just a few hours ago I was using my one good hand to slice off styrene sheets and strips that will be used for such a thing.

The roofs will have to wait a few weeks though, until after my left arm starts healing a bit – enough to saw through those thicker plastic sections.

In my SF frontier town I will also incorporate several buildings I have bought over the years:

Of course, I will also add several scratch-built ones to the mix.

But I guess we can never have too many options for buildings, right?

Dan – I've been trying to post this for you as a new topic, but tmp will not let me start any at the moment (weird)

I was thinking about your request for making buldings out of spacecraft hulls. I started to think of stuff I started to convert over the years for 28mm sci-fi, and one item struck me as possibly being of use to you.

If you could find a cheap or even better slightly damaged one on ebay, I think the hull would cut up quite nicely and the 'skeleton' of the craft could be built onto as well, I think it'd work well for 15mm. Apologies if you've already thought of this one.

Cacique Caribe07 Sep 2011 6:37 a.m. PST

Alien Surfer,

That is definitely an awesome-looking source for curved hull material. I must get my hands on one of those.

Thanks so much,

Dan

Dan – I had and might still have at my family home 3 or 4 of these. When I next get up there and check the loft I'll see if I still have them – as I won't need that many :-)

Scott,

That would be fantastic! Please let me know if you find them when you get up there.

Thanks!

Psyckosama08 Sep 2011 2:26 p.m. PST

Wow! I'd love to get my hands on one of those… maybe take a pair of Echo-Microphones and give it big honkin' engine pods!

Cacique Caribe09 Sep 2011 3:38 p.m. PST

Search for styrene sheets with simple moulded greeblies . . .

Has anyone started cutting up, and playing with the curved bits from, their toy microphones yet?

If so, I'd love to see the results!

Thanks,

Dan

This is fantastic. Double sided stickytapeto adhear your paper to paper/card. It will never come off. no need to wait for glue to dry, not stick etc.

I've had the idea re the microphones for a couple of years but this tube tutorial has really gotten it going for me.

I recently got some 2mm corrugated card & some pine offcuts av 25mm wide by 25mm high. with the cc, ceral boxes & doublesided tape I've been able to knock out around 6 shanties in 1/2 hour (not sea shanties either)
bishbosh a slap of black then orange rust then light grey. Done.45mins-1 hour to start.

now for the packing tube nissan huts (or Quonset as some folk know them.)
