My club (Wessex Wargamers Winchester) put on "The Thing" as a participation game at Warfare back in 2006. We got the "best participation game" shield for it, so some people must have liked it! There are some pics of the game here: link Dave |

Thanks for the info. Very useful. Maybe it would work in an RPG setting? |

I didn't even know that EBOB did figures for the film characters of Outpost 31. picture picture I guess I missed the boat. CC |

That's one of my all-time favorite monster movies. But how would you do it as a game? The two key elements are that 1) you don't know who is an alien, and 2) players who start out as human can change during the game. #1 seems easy enough at the beginning, but how would you do #2 without tipping off the players as to who is what? Also, I like the idea of using improvised weapons. Anybody ever play Awful Green Things From Outer Space? They had a system for that that was fun. |
darthfozzywig | 29 Oct 2009 8:05 a.m. PST |
I know I'm human. If you were all those Things, you'd just attack me, so some of you are still human

Thought about it many times. Have had a saved eBay search looking for the old EBOB figs for ages and nothing ever comes up. They were always on my "to get" list and he pulled them before I finally followed through. Argh!!!!!!!!! |

Axabrax, We just need to ask miniature makers to make for us some generic "contemporary/near-future frozen planet colonists" dressed in Artic/Antarctic outfits then! CC |
Thomas Whitten | 29 Oct 2009 8:44 a.m. PST |
Add me to the list for off-world frozen colonisits. In 28mm of course. |

Copplestone's Partisans and Partisan Fighters packs from their Future Wars range look pretty chilly and are fairly generic. A few of them are wearing parkas. Also, some of these guys might work: link |

I would love for more in 28mm, but I can find none in 15mm. CC |

#1 seems easy enough at the beginning, but how would you do #2 without tipping off the players as to who is what? MeroMero hits the problem on the head. How would you know that even 3 of the players are aliens? It would be more of an RPG scenario. Maybe each player draws cards at the start of each turn. Most say, "You're still Human", but some say, "You're an Alien. Don't tell anyone!" If an alien player gets alone with a human player, he will try to convert him. How would the other players be oblivious to all this? This is a difficult scenario. "McCready, the generator is gone." "Can it be fixed on time?" "No, it's GONE!" Ralph |
Thomas Whitten | 29 Oct 2009 1:08 p.m. PST |
I can see it where a player's character randomly becomes alien. Any actions before that time can be attributed to 'trying to fit in.' That would add a bit of tension to the game as you don't know who is alien, even yourself. Still, I agree, it would be a difficult scenario but if done well would be quite satisfying. Maybe dasfrpsl could explain how they did it? |

About finding 15mm Arctic/Antarctic figures: TMP link Well . . . if there are ways to game The Thing with miniatures, then there must be ways to game this oldie . . . TMP link What do you guys think? CC PS. I didn't know there was a video game for The Thing: link |

THE THING . . . Part II? Here ya go: These guys could be part of a team that goes in and finds McReady and Childs, almost frozen . . . picture link picture picture And then everything goes south, meaning really bad, as each faction/nation tries to get at the remaining tissue samples for their weapons programs. Of course, the Norwegians were the ones who found the ship, so they really think they should have possession. CC TMP link |

I always wanted to game the thing, solo or with a friend, its about the hidden nature of the virus.. I had a idea just now
Each time a player/ figure comes into contact with the virus, you make a infection roll, if you fail it you get the virus, hidden roll from other players, and if you fail you get a " thing point" and each time you alone with sombody make a roll maybe a 1D10, and if you roll under your " thing point " score you show your real self..? IE/ 3 players at the same time find a dog dog, and get some blood on themselves, the infecting roll is a 5+ on a D6, each roll and 2 pass and i fail, so hes infected.. That figures has a thing point score of 1 and each time you alone with somebody roll a D10 and roll your thing point of under to turn and attack the other figure, as the game go`s on, your thing point will get stronger
Maybe using the thing point score of a way of finding out whos human.. Maybe a rubbish idea, but the making a roll to see if your infected each time and don`t tell anybody may work
Sorry about that i got lost in thought,,, |
