I'm usually pretty good at seeing the terrain/scenic potential of weird and ordinary things alike. However, when it comes to these little cubes, I cannot come up with anything: link But I am sure one, or some, of you will look at them and say, "hey, they would be perfect for . . .", and then suggest the most amazing and practical idea ever. The kind of idea that makes the rest of us wonder why we were not the first one to come up with it. So . . . CC |

The square ones are elderly gel monsters, like the ones recently posted devouring a skeleton, that were cylindrical, rather squat, and a bit mis-shapen. They are square, since they are old, and hence considered to be "square" by the hip youngsters. |

So WHAT Could These Cubes Be Used For??? Strange icy/crystalline terrain like Mongo's Frigia or the Hyborian northlands. Bricks of the wicked Ice B!tch's castle. Need a lot to finish that job. Igloos for that expedition to discover the north polar opening to Pellucidar. Props for your gamers to handle when they find those rare colorless diamonds, dilithuim crystals, eyes of the god Skelos, etc
. Coat them with various washes, apply varnish finish – vo la – different gem stones of monstrous sizes. If you feel up to it you can carve away bits & pieces to make miniature ice sculptures. PS – Yeti scat! |
Dropzonetoe | 20 Aug 2009 5:28 a.m. PST |
I would take them build ice pillars of assorted sizes then around the bases I would make christaline ice spikes out of cheap hexagonal shaped pencils cut to varying height. or add texture paint and make them into ancient ruins of some sort. Oh, and they might make for some interesting lighted elemtets to a board. Think having a blue light on a ice board or a green one on a necron board. |

I have considered gluing them to the ceilings of multi-level mazes to illuminated the lower levels. I planned to use the red or green ones rather than the white ones. |
richarDISNEY | 20 Aug 2009 7:28 a.m. PST |
I bet if you paint the bottom's a light blue, and then use them as a floor of a cave, it'd look pretty fantastic
|
Cacique Caribe | 20 Aug 2009 7:32 a.m. PST |
Religon, red or green? Going for the X-mas look? :) Warrenss2, the blue floating ice would definitely work for the North Pole opening to Pellucidar: link I wonder if there's a similar manufacturer/distributor in the US (with all the cool choices – pardonn the pun – at this website): link CC |
Paintbeast | 20 Aug 2009 8:15 a.m. PST |
They are a bit pricey to build anything with. You would be better off casting your own clear blocks for that. If you had just a few spare they could be used for a "Fetch the Ice" scenario. Ranging from early man fetching ice to preserve food to Cowboys transporting ice from the Ice Lodge to the Saloon. An Ice Lodge terrain piece would be cool (groan!). The cubes wouldn't be the right shape to recreate the Ice house scene from that Bruce Lee movie
but you could look there for inspiration. |

To be honest the best gaming use I can think of is to use the cubes as the body and pseudopods of a "blob" monster. Example: on the gaming table (a classic small town square) the blob starts to appear from the manholes, corner street drain/runoffs, storm drains
one cube in round one, then 1D10 in cubes each round and just have the cubes touch each other
chaining out the great gooey gelly goodness! Break the chain and it either rejoins or coninues as the remaining cubes (1+) looking for movement. *********************** or ************************* For space ship gaming, use the cubes to represent the newest alien threat
Borg stand down
the Splorg are taking over! Splorg absorb all matter and convert it over to living space gel. Each cube represents the "ship" and then other cubes could be used once the vile organics are converted to the way of the gel! Are you gel'n? :) |

The Star Trek novel "Doctor's Orders" (Diane Duane) featured a planet with three intelligent species: * the Ornae, the friendliest of the bunch, who look a lot like those cubes; * the Lahit, who look like ambulatory trees; * the ;At, who resemble monoliths and who are not to be trifled with. Add some bad-tempered Klingons and a powerful Orion raider, and you've got quite a mix for a Star Trek landing party, or any other universe' landing party, for that matter. |

I use small acrylic cubes (1/4" to 1/2") for mounting GHQ 1:2400 WWII aircraft. Paint the plane, glue it to the clear cube, then I glue the cube onto an ocean-colored metal strip with aircraft ID printed on it. I haven't lost a Zero or Wildcat yet in several fleet games. |

If I had a bunch of lumpy cubes like that I'd be tempted to paint 'em gray/stone and make a miniature quarry to fight in. |
The Dread Pirate GeorgeD | 20 Aug 2009 11:22 a.m. PST |
I used them to make ice terrain out of. I did my usual scenic treatment on a piece of illustration board. Then I liberally coated that with some acrylic snow medium like you get for ceramics in the craft shop. When that was dry, I used a hot melt glue gun to affix the clear ice crystals to the base till I achieved a shape I was pleased with. If anyone is interested I can post a picture on my blog of the finished product. As soon as I charge my camera up. Cheers. GeorgeD. |

How about antarctic versions of Mayan temples? Instead of blocky pyramids of stone covered with creeping vines, you could make blocky pyramids of ice partially covered with snow or frost. Alternatively, you could do an icy version of Stonehenge by stacking the cubes into stacks and structures 2-3 high. Put the structures into a circle, and voila--Icehenge. You could even etch runes into each surface to really give them a mystical appearance. If you wanted to increase the "creep" factor, you could take Thieses' idea one step further--you could make a sacrificial altar in the middle and use some ink to give it a reddish tinge
