Just in from Time Machine Miniatures.

RE: MM336 Orc Warband?

Dan:
Got your mail and question. Yes Dan Mithril did have a set of Orcs and they were marketed as a set in the designated Mithril code that you have seen. There were 30 figures per set but the sets did not always included each of the 21 different figures, just a total of 30 figures per set.

I did have a lot of these sets years back but they have long since been sold. I was able to work out a deal with the owner of Mithril a few years ago as they were no longer able to market the figures(license rights). I was able to get permission to market them and have been doing so since 2002.

I don't have a set of the orcs but you can buy them seperately if you like. The individual price is $3.00. There are 21 different figures. I cannot sell them or market them as Lord of the Rings Figures and do not but they are the same figures.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards
JIm Corless for Time Machine Miniatures

It's good to know Jim is still doing this; as he mentioned, the original sets did not always include each mini. On eBay often the sets of originals go for $50 USD to $100, if you can find them. So that makes Jim's a bargain:)

Time Machine Miniatures is indeed the best option. I am going to make a list and order from Jim in the next few days.

Orolin, many thanks. I would have never known about TMM if you had not brought it up.

Glad to be of help, CC, plus I must confess that I am a huge fan of these minis and have been for a while. To me, they most reflect the spirit of Tolkien, even in the ones drawn from MERP sources. I use them with some GW and other minis to fill out the armies in Middle Earth…

I am very happy with the figures I have received from Tom Meier at Thunderbolt Mountain and I think that a few of the Mithril ones mixed in will add additional spice and more Tolkien "authenticity" to their overall look.

Yes. I'm feeling somewhat nostalgic of the way McBride portrayed them.

I can't wait for these Jim Bowen Orcs from East Riding Miniatures:

I'm still trying (unsuccessfully, I might add) to make these McBride helmets for some of my Orcs:

One of these days, I hope to report on promising results.

Someone really needs to do 28 orcs like those in the McBride illustrations on the first post.

My Mithril Orcs are in!

About my order from Time Machine Miniatures:

CC, if you get hooked on the Mithril figures there is a die hard collectors forum on their site (www.mithril.ie).

..or look at Many Mithril Pages where all of probably the most extensive Lord of the Rings range is displayed from all kinds of perspectives:

I will check it out. Thanks.

OK. It looks I am slowly moving in the right direction with my helmet attempts:

I'm focussing on only the general shape for now.

In all of the Orc paintings done by Angus, even trolls, the helmets and lorica segmentata armor are fantastic.

I totally agree. I like McBride's stuff even better than I do John Howe's. That pic you linked to of the hero with his back to the standing stone and his sword poised two-handed, is one of my favorites. You just know that when the troll's club falls, that guy is going to leap-roll inside and take the arm on his blade. Will it work?….

Judas Iscariot13 Oct 2007 2:06 a.m. PST

Hmm… That second link is showing a "Denial of access"…

Anyway… I think that maybe Angus was closer to the Way that Tolkein had thought of trolls that were PJ or others before him.

I think that they made them a touch too large…. And, unlike Angus' troll… They had no shields. The Olog-Hai mentioned by Tolkein carried shields… (like Angus has pictured, bucklers in size to the Trolls).

I have thought about taking the GW cave troll and doing a conversion on it to turn it into an "Olog-Hai" with all of the armor and such (Buckler included), and then 'trying' to do something to make a cave-troll that was smaller than the Olog-Hai, but still retain the look of the PJ troll… I always thought that the Cave-Troll should have been about 8 ft tall at the most, and that one looked to be around 12 to 16ft (in the movie)….

Ah, well, the vagaries of merchandising…

Judas Iscariot13 Oct 2007 2:08 a.m. PST

Oh, CC,

In your comparison photos, you have a GW Orc with a sword pointed out in front of him…

I cannot seem to find him anywhere in the GW line, but he definitely looks like a GW Orc…

Do you know which line he came from?

Would you be willing to part with that model (assuming that I cannot find it elsewhere)?

PS. I may be able to sneak off and take a weekend trip to the house next weekend. At which point I can pick up and mail off the figure.

Warbeads13 Oct 2007 6:32 p.m. PST

Well, some great, some okay and a few that do nothing for me.

Commented before about my disdain for Orc Orthodontia problems but that is like all art a subjective thing.

Ih I was still doing 25mm Fantasy then I would purue some of these but it's the Der Kriegspieler Dwarves that I truly covet…

Gracias,

Glenn

Cacique Caribe16 Oct 2007 4:37 p.m. PST

Glenn,

I wouldn't expect Orcs with pretty teeth. :)

Besides, there are plenty of real-life examples of exotic orthodontia:

Old topic but I recently found this:

Reaper Kagunk Ogre chieftain by Bob Olley:

I believe based directly on Angus Mcbride's artwork of a Middle Earth Troll:

Dirach,

Wow. I can't believe how close Bob got to THE look, though I would have preferred a more rounded face and belly like Tom's Goblins here:
