Holy Crap!! I've been waiting years for this I hope they don't screw it up, now if the author would get off his backside and put out his next book in the series..

axabrax30 Jun 2008 8:22 a.m. PST

I never heard of it. What's the premise?

Mark Wals30 Jun 2008 8:36 a.m. PST

It's an ACW single union regiment vs Fantasy Beastmen thing. Sort of like Janissary (in a way)but not as good. A yankee ACW regiment sails through the ether and lands in a plce where humans aer prey to Beastmen, they have the expertise (blacksmiths, chemists, gunsmiths) to oranize the humans to resist the ccreaturese. Pretty silly book.

The producer listed is Tom Cruise. Wait, didn't he already make this movie? Union officer in a strange land teaching the natives modern warfare.

The first book is about an ACW regiment from Maine on a steambat sailing inot a war and ending up on a planet where giant creatures that are organized and fight like Mongols. The little problem here is that these creatures have pretty much conquered the continent and travel across it expecting humans as tribute from every human city they come to. These unlucky humans then end up as food for these creatures and seem to be killed in rather unpleasant ways.

The Maine regiment finds a country similar to feudal Russian and end up training them in ACW tactics to fight against the creatures. So it becomes an small army of ACW type soldiers supported by feudal troops against the horde of "Mongols"

I really liked the series. It as a little over the top at times but it was a fun read. You will find these soldiers from Maine quite an innovative lot. As the series progress they develop the ability to manufacture ironclads, land ships and planes (of a sort).

Great. Just when I was about to give up hope on ever trying to game Tugars vs ACW:

That sounds cool; I'll see if they have it at the local library. Hopefully Cruise won't inject a Scientology theme…

Axabrax,

This sounds like a train crash starting in slow motion.

A great run of books (if a little cringe worthy at times and desparately in need of suspension of disbelief) but Hollywood, surely not. They will fluff over the canibalism and slavery and condense it into incoherant drivel.

Magister,

I agree. They will ruin the awesome harvest and Moon Feast aspects, including the whole head on table thing.

So sad.

However, if they portray the battles on the screen correctly, it may finally interest some gamers into trying it on a table.

Does anyone have a link to where this info is coming from about the movie?

This forum comment indicates that this seems to be a recycled announcement:

They may be serious about it this time around though.

I saw the cover and thought it said "Rally Gay"…

Irish Marine,

What do you mean with the next book in the series?
There's a definitive end to the series in the last one isn't it?

Zyphyr30 Jun 2008 1:45 p.m. PST

There is in no way a definitive end in the last book released. The last book has them encountering a previously unmentioned technically advanced group of the beastmen, and a war starting up with them.

WillieB30 Jun 2008 2:11 p.m. PST

Agree, but they make some sort of 'peace' with the Tugar don't they?
I'm not sure a follow up series was planned.

Cacique Caribe30 Jun 2008 2:59 p.m. PST

I think that "Down to the Sea" is the last one in the series, right?

I second the idea of playing a game of this series..
someone may actually come out with some Tugar figs..
hopefully 10mm, but probably 15's..

Or the Perrys could do 'em in plastic..! Yeah..! :-)

When I was looking at trying to play scenarios, I was going to use 15mm civil war figures for our heroes and Grenadier "Fantasy Warriors" Half-Orcs for the Tugars…in fact, I have a whole pile of the stuff sitting around here, waiting for me to paint it…:D

Sounds kind of like Drake's "Ranks of Bronze" … But Yankees instead of Romans …

Seems I missed one. Never read Down To The Sea.
