I know many have produced reptilian humanoids in the past but . . . . . . what manufacturers CURRENTLY produce them in 28-30mm metal, either as primitives or space-faring? This was the inspiration for the question: TMP link CC |
Farstar | 25 Jul 2006 2:32 p.m. PST |
"Primitives" would include WotC, Reaper, and GW, as well as various lizard- and snake-men from the likes of MegaMinis, Rackham, and RAFM. Space-faring would include Scotia/Grendel (buried in the Kryomek stuff) and Olley, though both are pretty small/idiosyncratic sets at the moment. There is also a single set of winged reptilians ("Droyne") with guns in the Traveller line from MegaMinis. I suspect we'll see some from Mongoose in some capacity. |
Patules | 25 Jul 2006 10:19 p.m. PST |
It would be nice to see Serpent-men modeled after the ones Kull fought. |

Well, I don't know if it's exactly what you're looking for, but there's the Hydrissians from Alpha Forge

This guy looks perfect for the part. All I need to do is replace the scimitar with a more high-tech weapon: link If he is a one-of figure, then I guess I will use him as a single reptilian humanoid stranded on Earth. CC |

CC, I've always like the RAFM lizard men. link I have a bunch for my Blood Bowl team. here Are some new ones that have empty hands for easy conversion. I have some of the one in the link for my VSF gaming. As always, Hairy |

Harlequin/Icon/Black Tree has Lizardmen that are totally compatible with the GW Lizards (including slotta-bases) in a fairly wide range.. I have most of them..:-) ex: Lizardmen Pyramid Guards (15) for $ 25.49 They are also fairly easy to convert to SF.. Jim |

I miss the old Reptiliads line by RAFM, I believe. Always wanted to buy some when I was a kid and had no money. Now I could just about squeeze out a few bucks for some, and they are gone. Oh well. Just one more injustice of life. |
Goldwyrm | 26 Jan 2007 11:36 a.m. PST |
The Droyne mentioned earlier are here: link I just got a pack of them a few days ago. They're 25mm and not big. But for my games there is no rule that says they have to be as tall as humans. I'll be thinking of them as winged space kobolds. |

"that's a current plastic Skink head and legs on a Tau body with bits of armor added." That is precisely why I was trying to acquire one sprue of those new plastic Skinks: TMP link I might be getting a sprue of some of the older ones. I have never seen those older ones in person, but I hope that their faces are just as nice and that they have multiple poses that lend themselves to similarly nice conversions. CC |

Chthoniid | 23 Jul 2007 8:59 p.m. PST |
The trick with reptile-based bipeds I think, is not to borrow too many elements from human anatomy. The hips of modern reptiles for instance, favour a sprawling gait and a reptilian-biped isn't likely to have slim 'primate hips'. Also, there isn't a lot of muscle tissue around the abdomen- a lot of a crocodile's stomach spreads over the ground when it rests. It does have excellent armoured plates (osteoderms) on the other hand. There are a number of possibilities on how a reptile would become more erect and bipedal. One might be that the back arches (and become more rigid) rather than being flexible and erect. Turtles- another reptile group- achieved some of this rigidity by fusing their ribs together to form the carapace. A long neck might achieve height in a way our own primate evolution could not- consider some of the taller birds
The hip-design nontheless, provides the biggest challenge for a reptile intending to standa erect. Some crocodilians can gallop 'erect' on their back legs for short distances however- looks a bit comical. This emphasises however, that compared to primates, reptiles begin with a proportionally longer trunk and proportionally shorter limbs. Chthonic ruminations B |

Oooo nice. Thanks! CC Going back to the drawing board. |
Chthoniid | 24 Jul 2007 1:23 a.m. PST |
Aah, always nice to get a bit zoological when I can. For my sins I've had to play with crocodilians in the past, and this year it's been back and forth to China playing with tigers. |
Norscaman | 25 Jul 2007 2:41 p.m. PST |
On the other hand, chimps have smaller limbs too. We developed long limbs for a reason. Though I agree, I would try to use longer necks. These might be cool necks, but expensive
link I think that this is too anthropomorphsized: picture We have forward facing kneews because we were tree climbers. It is actually the WORST knee. To me, a sentient reptile, adapted to living in the plains, might have a flat face like the above and humans including forward position eyes, but would still have raptor legs. They are faster, wear better, and would be more conducive to hot climates. On a relate but different note, I am converting some of Old Glory's Octopons to space Octopons. Nice! |
