I cannot tell if this film is based at all on the novel by the same name (by Jeff Long): imdb.com/title/tt0435625 TMP link Or is it a knock-off by the same title and general theme? Does anyone know? Thanks. CC |

I don't see any credit given to J. Long as a writer (the usual "novel based on" legalese): timeout.com/film/82881.html link link I liked the novel's concept and would get the dvd if it is based on the novel. CC |

The only similarity is the basic concept, underground creatures vs humans. The novels appproach of entire armies going down to claim/explore the underground is completely gone. Here it's just reduced to a group of female potholers. No big battles, no underground bases, no characters from the book at all. It's just the name used. It's not a bad film IMHO, preferred it to the novel in many ways. |

The novel and the movie aren't connected at all, no. And I, also, found the movie to be preferable to the novel, far preferable in my case- the movie provided that rarest of beasts, actual creepiness and spooks in a movie. I was surprised. - Monk |

Oh- one caveat, though. If you're extremely claustrophobic, there may be a particular scene in the film which you simply cannot watch. I'm not claustrophobic- in fact, I prefer to sleep in dark, right spaces- nor am I prone to being unsettled by
well, much of anything, really- and the scene bothered me. - Monk |

Saw it. I am claustrophobic, and it reaaaaly bothered me. When the ludicsous cretures tunred up, it was blessed light relief. That ending ed me off royally though. |

Yes but here in the Uk, we have had the film out for about a year now. Tis a good film, made me jump more than once, which is always good. |

Strongly recommend it to you guys in the USA, I saw it was due for release shortly after I left. No connection to the book at all. |

A movie where they actually remembered how to do suspense? Outstanding!!! I'll have to keep my eyes open for this one. |

Apparently they are showing this on Sky TV UK towards the end of August. Didnt know it was made by the guy who made Dog Soldiers? |

For those who have already seen the film, which of these would be the closest to the ghouls in the movie? TMP link CC |

I am not claustrophobic. I am, however, a veteran amateur spelunker, and the concept of going caving without SOMEONE on the outside knowing EXACTLY where I am, where I was going, and when I'm due back
that's idiocy beyond idiocy. And the scene in question creeped me out, too. I've gotten stuck in a shaft or two, in my time, and there is certainly no creepier feeling than being SURE that the shaft is getting SMALLER on you

Cacique Caribe: these are probably the closest in appearance. The ones in Descent looked like the offspring of Gollum and some demented Nosferatu. link |

Spoiler is here, so you'll know whether it is close to the book or not: link |
Not You | 07 Aug 2006 2:06 p.m. PST |
I thought the movie was lacking in a number of logistical areas. Like Doc Bedlam said, not having anyone up top know where you were is STUPID! Also the ropes they initally descended into the cavern with were too thin to climb back up. So they were going into an uncharted cave, without telling anyone where they were, into a cave nobody has gone through or even knew if there was an exit to. The monsters were neat. The women spelinking were stupid as all get out. To the point where I felt most of them deserved anything they got. Wait to rent it IMO. |
caver1 | 07 Aug 2006 7:08 p.m. PST |
just as a response for "not you" regarding the ropes
bearing in mind that I have only seen the preview, and not the movie itself, but in the preview the rope and ascending gear they show is spot on. Cave rope is slightly less than .5 inch in diameter, and is static – aka, it doesn't stretch the way climbing rope does, so when you get to the bottom and remove the weight from the line, it won't spring up out of reach. You climb back up it through the use of mechanical ascenders that grip the rope in one direction, and slide freely in the other. The climbing sensation is not onlike climbing a ladder, or, with some setups, like doing a whole lot of situps. I will reserve other caving reality vs fictionalized fantasy comments until I actually see the movie, because I am certain there will be a lot of things I don't like about how they portray caving, but the rappel as shown in the preview at least appears feasible. Now, as to my opinion regarding any predatory species living underground
well, lets just say that if they are large enought to endanger humans, then there had better be some other large food source around for them to turn to when incompetent college spelunkers/cavers fail to show up. caver |

The movie definitely suggested the creatures had ways of leaving the cave and hunting
the humans just never managed to find any of those exits. |

I saw it a year or three ago at the famous 24 Hour Movie Marathon ( World Famous in New Zealand, as they say) and it was released here about a year ago . . . I suspect that we were a test audience as we often are at this event, and the studio decided that they would wait until people had forgotten about that 'Rings' movie and would not be tempted to squeal "My preciousssssss!!!" when the monsters turned up. |
