I am looking for different sizes AND poses of dogs that can pass as VERY early canines (either as the first domesticated types, or as simply our very first hunting "partners"). Mastifs and other Dark Age hounds seem too late-looking. Has anything been developed since the subject was last discussed on this other thread? TMP link CC |

Ral Partha used to do some old proto-canids. Haven't seen any recently, though. |

Mega Minis are bringing out Fox and hounds too. Outpost have some hunting hounds and Amazon miniatures which may be OK. |

CC – I don't know if you use ebay or not, but if you do you may be interested in this auction: auction It includes the aforementioned Ral Partha proto-canid as well as prehistoric cats. Best be quick though – the auction finishes in less than a day from now. |

Just to be clear – I am in no way associated with the seller, sbgames999. I just spotted this auction when I was searching ebay for some old 25mm figs, and remembered your request in this thread. |

Old Ral Partha prehistoric mammal (and many other) figs are still available from Iron Wind. They're not listed in the IW website though – you have to get a copy of the old Ral Partha Mail Order Catalog (thru IW). Then call IW and they'll spin them up for you! |

My favorite wolves have always been Ral Partha's. They had a pack of (if I remember) seven distinct poses, all proportioned beautifully. The big one simply oozed "why yes, I am the alpha." |

If you are looking for the earliest dogs, they should indeed look very much like wolves. Mastiffs and other less wolfish looking dogs are actually displaying immature features, or features that stop growing early. Bulldog pups, for example, look very much like wolf pups, but as they grow, they diverge more and more. So, presumably, the earliest canine companions would look most like wolves as those genetic features that man helped along took generations to establish. I like Reaper's wolves. I think Vendel's are one of the few miniatures of his that I don't like. They look like stuffed animals. |

Huskies of any manufacture would be a good start, the copplestone ones are quite good. For another track you could go with African wild dogs. If you compare African wild dogs with a fully mix breed they are quite similar. These would have short hair, small ears and be yellowish. Minifigs had hunting dogs at one point that would fit. |

Julie Guthrie did some 4 small wolfs for Grenadier. Now available either from Megaminis or grenadier.it (the latter with a woodelf mage). I use them as bastard wild dogs. |

I will mention that I collect all of the D&D animals from Wizcoast's CMG. Most of them are "dire" critters, with various horny protrusions. When they bother me, I cut them off (easy to do, since they are plastic) and re-touch with paint. The wolf is not "dire", but very big. There is your alpha! The dire wolf is very big, and possibly not usable in an historical setting. I have several of the wolves from the old Gamma World figs. Also very big, but very nice. |

Reaper also does a three pack of wolves, each distinct. |

Thanesgame's "great wolf" link is lovely and despite the listed "scale" of 15mm it seems like a good size for 28mm (that base is just over an inch long) Variety however is a problem since there's only one sculpt |

Update: * Got 9 of the Reaper wolves (3 of their wolf packs) * I might still get the Ral Partha 7-wolf pack (for variety) * I am alsog getting dogs from Eureka, Pulp Figures, Conquest Miniatures and, possibly, Copplestone (a couple from each) I have also found that Minifigs no longer carries their dogs and that the Dixon ones may soon be available in the U.S. via Grandiosity. Looks like there is going to be a lot of barking at my place! CC |
