As probably a final Christmas present…..

The entries below are aimed at pulling together links to downloadable material on the Bavarian Military. My sincere thanks to the Napoleon Series Forum (in particular Steve H. Smith, John (Jack) H. Gill, & many, many others). As with previous contributions this is not exhaustive but should give those who have an interest in the Bavarian Military good access to a fair range of material – unfortunately not all unit histories are available, viewable, or downloadable.

Where possible I have inserted direct download links but unfortunately I have not been able to achieve this for all entries.

Please note for some items, non-US inhabitants will need to use a VPN to gain access. If you do not have access to fast internet, you should think very carefully whether to attempt to try and download any items where multiple volumes can be downloaded in one go or where I have indicated either a big or large download. I may add to this list if and when I find other suitable material.

"Flag Collection

The collection of flags and standards in the Bavarian Army Museum comprises several hundred specimens and is one of the largest collections of flags in Germany. This collection is of particular importance not only because of its size, but rather because of its historical dimension, which is due to the age and the closed tradition of the field signs. Essentially, the collection was created in the late 19th century, when the flags from various Bavarian armouries were handed over to the Army Museum.

Despite considerable losses of the museum in the Second World War, this part of the collection has been handed down to this day largely unscathed. …

The oldest field sign is the flag of the Bürgerwehr of the city of Ingolstadt. This had been erected in 1546 when the city was threatened by the troops of the Schmalkaldic League. While hardly any flags from the Thirty Years' War have survived, a denser tradition begins at the beginning of the 18th century. Since then, military flags and standards have been uniformly regulated. Their development under the Bavarian rulers can be traced in numerous examples, until they underwent one last major change in 1841. From this last flag pattern, which was used until 1918, even all the field insignia of the Royal Bavarian Army have been preserved. They are now exhibited in the so-called Fahnensaal on the 2nd floor of the New Palace, which thus takes on a special significance. The flags of all regiments of the Royal Bavarian Army up to 1918 are exhibited here in the original, a total of over 150 field signs.

In addition to these flags, which came from the Bavarian army, numerous flags have also been preserved in the Bavarian Army Museum that came to Bavaria as loot from the Napoleonic Wars or the First World War. These are also presented in the permanent exhibition. In addition, there is still a considerable number of flags from the 20th century in the stacks of the Bavarian Army Museum. These include in particular flags of warrior and veteran associations that upheld the tradition of the disbanded Bavarian army after 1918, but also flags of political organizations, naval flags or military flags up to the end of the 20th century, which round off this extensive collection.

In 2017, a detailed publication on the Bavarian flags was published as a catalogue of the Bavarian Army Museum. The author is the long-time curator for the flag collection at the Bavarian Army Museum, Jürgen Kraus.

A detailed article about the flag collection of the Bavarian Army Museum has been published by Jürgen Kraus in the magazine "Der Flaggenkurier" (29/2009).
