So is this new matt just a big piece of teddy bear fur? Since the pictures on the site only show the "matt" with lots of terrain and troops on it, that seems to be the best interpretation I can make.

That grass is way too long in my view. Nice start and the colors are great, but I would cut it way down. Way down.

What is seen here is preferable to this potential customer: link

That length would work if you use it for wheat or something, not an entire battlefield.

Stoppage17 Jun 2019 6:58 a.m. PST

The long fur has grown on me:

need more pics with just the mat and a couple of shots with different scale figures on it

Will this mat be available for purchase or viewing at Historicon next month?

David, how easily is it trimmed, I presume with something larger than a mustache/beard trimmer? An electric hair [head] trimmer?

Rev Zoom17 Jun 2019 8:04 a.m. PST

So, I buy the long haired grass mat. Then I buy an electric trimmer. Then I trim the mat? And I do it where? Inside? So now I get the vacuum cleaner and spent however long that takes but then have to face the wrath of my wife for all the fur that has already spread through the house? Or, I do it outside and then get fined by my HOA for spreading an unapproved substance through the neighborhood all the while the city Hazmat team shows up to determine if this fur is contagious?

Uh, I think not.

At 60 USD it'd be worth getting if only just to cut up into fields. Will it be available in the UK?

TSD10117 Jun 2019 8:15 a.m. PST

I have one of these, bought from Killing Fields terrain itself. The fur is nice and of good quality, it is very soft. The length is good for 28mm. If you do 10 or 15mm you may need to shave it down a bit. Letting it sit out flat overnight when you first get it and using a hair dryer on a low setting to get a nice wind swept look helps.

Martyn K17 Jun 2019 8:34 a.m. PST

I see that this mat is made by Killing Fields. Is this the same mat that is offered on the Killing Fields website or is it a custom mat made for TWC by Killing Fields?
If it is a custom mat, how is it different to the Killing Fields product – color, grass height? I see the price is lower than the Killing Fields direct price and I was wondering the reason.

The only other question I have is that when I go to the purchase page it says that it is 5' x 7' approximately. But it is only guaranteed to be 48" x 72" (4' x 6').
Do you really get this much variation? I really need 5' x 7' mats and the mats from Killing Fields have consistently met this size. Could I end up getting a smaller mat if I buy from you?

I have always like using the Killing Fields mats, they are great products.

If one needs to trim the pile oneself, I'd skip it. The photo shows it way too long, and if I'm buying a commercially made mat, I want a product that's ready to go.

Note that "Trimming" something like this requires an electric trimmer. Which means most people would need to buy one. Doing it with scissors is a no go.

Mike Petro17 Jun 2019 11:09 a.m. PST

My two cents, I think it looks pretty boss.

coopman17 Jun 2019 11:24 a.m. PST

I wonder how much a professional barber would charge to trim that down?

TSD10117 Jun 2019 11:56 a.m. PST

We find that this Version 2 (lower pile) of the Killing Fields Grassland Mat looks quite good unmodified with 10mm and 15mm miniatures

Since I bought mine at least a year ago, did I get a Version 1 that is taller than what is being sold now?

As an aside, as this is a commercial project I don't this kind of topic is appropriate on this Forum. It should be under Hobby News. Kind of like guys trying to sell their products without becoming a supporting member.

Bandolier17 Jun 2019 3:37 p.m. PST

If I trim it too short, how long does it take to grow back…

Rev Zoom17 Jun 2019 5:41 p.m. PST

To The Wargaming Company,

Thanks for seeing I was just being a smartass. If I did 28mm instead of 15mm, I would seriously consider one.

Probably best suited to colonials, especially Darkest Africa. The third photo down above would look better if the TYW figures were replaced with Zulus.

Bowman18 Jun 2019 2:59 a.m. PST

Marcus, with all due respect, it is a vendor at Historicon announcing a product they will have at Historicon, and announcing this on the Conventions board. Seems appropriate to me. I now know about it and will check this out.

4th Cuirassier18 Jun 2019 3:57 a.m. PST

@ Henry Martini

My first thought was that I couldn't think of any historical battlefield for which this would be appropriate terrain.

Marcus Brutus18 Jun 2019 5:32 a.m. PST

Sorry Bowman but this Topic is all over TMP. I saw it on the Renaissance and Napoleonic Discussion Boards. Sorry, not appropriate.

I agree with Marcus Brutus. The boards are strewn with TWC's free advertising. He should purchase a membership.

On a positive note, I admire his diligence in answering all questions by individuals.

I've used The Killings Fields fur mats to further buzz and spray up for ACW and Medieval gaming -

A $60 USD pre-order price for this large portion is a pretty good deal IMO (I've paid lots more when looking for appropriate fur at fabric stores, that is when I could find the right color to start with).
