(Note – I've crossposted to Fantasy in case they happen to have ideas that could be applied here. Thanks.) I came across some speckled bright metallic yellow marbles that I thought would look nice and bright on the table, but putting them on regular round bases on terrain only makes them look darker.
(Here's a video clip showing the first contact scene: YouTube link ) Would raising the marbles on stands of clear 1/4" tall acrylic or glass rings under them be enough to make them look brighter, as if glowing a little bit? Or would I need to look for an "electronic" solution? Or perhaps try a different color entirely than the golden/amber ones in the film?
Suggestions? Thanks Dan TMP link TMP link TMP link link

Very clever. I wish I thought about this when I was making my army for the good, bad and ugly international HOTT tournament, with the Alien theme. |

Bobgnar I now have my eye on these, but only if I can make them look more "lighted up" than the metallic yellow ones I had bought: auction I wish these plastic rings were completely clear: auction I wish these were clear too: auction Dan |

Google acrylic ring. The images look like they may be what you're after. |

Thanks! These would be perfect if the outside diameter was 3/4": link But I'll keep looking. Dan |

Eureka! My wife saw what I was looking for and said I should look for plastic "cabone rings". Looks like she might have solved the problem. Now I just have to figure out what other sizes are available: link Dan |

I believe Litko will custom cut anything acrylic for you. |

Dan- Saw your post form 29 Dec 2017 10:55 p.m. and thought of your alternative options. Your post above shows chess pieces fashioned using the rings you linked to. Many suppliers sell game pieces. Could you use Pawn pieces from a chess set? Instead of marbles. Also, what about something constructed around a tea light? Or, some kind of LED lighting from model RR layout? |

Thanks for the tips. The tea light idea would be great for 28mm. It looks like I might end up going with "crystal ball" or "stone egg" ring stands made out of clear acrylic. And I'll go with the blue speckled marbles this time. I'll let you guys know how those turn out. Fingers crossed. Dan |

DM Scotty works with LED Tea Lights, for several of his projects for crafting fantasy terrain pieces. You can try visiting his YouTube Channel, or his FB page (Yuck!), or his Proboards Forum (much easier to search, and follow discussions…). Cheers! |

Wow, I hadn't looked at his stuff in quite some time. Very cool. Thanks! Dan |

What a cool site, Sgt Slag. Thanks! And Dan, this sounds like a great game to pursue. Better than the movie at any rate. |

Bowman, You are right. Some of the best game ideas do come from the worst films. Well, either that or I must have completely tuned out the film and my attention was completely turned to making it into a gaming scenario. :) Dan |

I really like all the concept artwork for it, including the stuff done by Ben Templesmith and others. link link link link The movie's effects got pretty close to the vision, but I still lean more to the blue than the movie's yellow ones for mine. Dan
