A) If not, then where? What part of the world?

B) Could you share some pictures of the terrain pieces you use to convey that local flavor?

Thanks,

Dan

Mine are mostly set in Africa.

No – Europe

Africa for the one I'm working on.

Like Sci Fi, Zombie stories seem to be based in the country that makes the movie/show. I guess it has to do with helping an audience identify with the characters/locations more.
Are wargamers any different, I wonder?

warwell05 Nov 2017 6:54 a.m. PST

Different planets

Redmenace05 Nov 2017 6:55 a.m. PST

It has been awhile but we used to play a lot of Twilight 2000 in which you started out on the remnant battlefields of WW3 so usually in Europe. We tended to get killed before making it back to the US.

More recently we played a number of zombie apocalypse stories were we would have been safely isolated in a Antarctic research center or on a deployed boomer when it all came down. In those stories there was a lot of raiding for resources at various coastal area or oil rigs along the Gulf Coast.

mwindsorfw05 Nov 2017 6:56 a.m. PST

Yes. Much of the world already looks and acts post-apocalyptic.

Mick the Metalsmith05 Nov 2017 7:29 a.m. PST

I base mine in Canada or Norway. Most everywhere else is underwater with rising sea levels

Dynaman878905 Nov 2017 7:58 a.m. PST

no – Poland, ala Twilight 2000

skippy000105 Nov 2017 8:07 a.m. PST

USA Fallout but would love a Euro setting.

I highly recomend this game

Mardaddy05 Nov 2017 8:46 a.m. PST

I've only played one zombie apoc game, and it just happened to be yesterday.

It was our first game of Starfinder, so it took place on an imaginary space station.

USA never thought of anywhere else

Gone Fishing05 Nov 2017 9:13 a.m. PST

Not really an area I game, but as almost all my picture of the genre is derived from The Road Warrior, Gamma World and the Hiero's Journey books, it would have to be in North America or Australia. There needs to be dust, vastness and wide open places.

GypsyComet05 Nov 2017 9:27 a.m. PST

Australia is the setting for one of the better Z movies, so it isn't a stretch.

War Monkey05 Nov 2017 9:32 a.m. PST

US and Europe

Clan Mac05 Nov 2017 9:40 a.m. PST

Most definitely US. Fallout inspired so Europe wouldn't work for me, despite being a Brit.

Tgunner05 Nov 2017 10:03 a.m. PST

I played Twilight 2000 back in the day. That was set in post WW III Poland and Germany. However that was a RPG, so no terrain.

That will change with my growing collection of Team Yankee stuff though!

14Bore05 Nov 2017 10:06 a.m. PST

Would love to but never have. But on the Last Word thread I have read lots of movie plots from in the future movies. Many of them are in different countries or in space

PatrickWR05 Nov 2017 1:00 p.m. PST

Generically USA, though I've run a few Stalker games set in an Eastern Europe analog setting.

Stealth100005 Nov 2017 1:24 p.m. PST

UK USA

Bob in Edmonton05 Nov 2017 1:31 p.m. PST

US because locally model railway terrain seems to mostly be based on US designs.

The Beast Rampant05 Nov 2017 4:02 p.m. PST

USA. Mostly because I've been heavily influenced by Fallout, and Thundarr the Barbarian.

To me, it's natural to build your dystopian setting around more familiar areas. Even though I've never actually seen it, a crumbling, vine-choked Lincoln Memorial just has more "ooh" factor than a similarly "post-apo'ed" London landmark.

Plus, yeah, the scenery is easier to come by. This is a great place to start:

We are playing with ships (selfbuilt 6mm) in the Doggermarsh in 2142.

Background is on the web, though only in German yet doggermarsch.de
Our ruleset "Tiefgang" for the ships is also around there.

I will put up some pics of our latest demogame from the Spieltage in Oldenburg. A translation in English is on the way, though it may take a week or month…

The Beast Rampant05 Nov 2017 4:40 p.m. PST

I would like to see that.

I image-searched Doggermarsch, and got exactly one pic (a personal record), of some fish. grin

Do you mean this area?

Not a setting I've ever played in but if I did it would be Fallout and Pandora.

chironex06 Nov 2017 3:36 a.m. PST

Only due to a dearth of right-hand-drive car minis, excessive issuing of figures with weapons so highly restricted they couldn't be found anywhere else now and need too much infrastructure to survive in order to be any use, and even greater lack of building kits that look like the Silverton Hotel…

Flashcove Supporting Member of TMP06 Nov 2017 4:33 a.m. PST

USA, because that's my figures and paper buildings!

Puster Sponsoring Member of TMP06 Nov 2017 6:07 a.m. PST

@Dan
Exactly. The story is that flooding reaches +10m, with the low countries (northern Germany, Netherlands) being submerged. Successive storms wash out much of the soil into the northsea. A nuclear winter then dumps the temperature and the sea level with Doggerland submerging and effectively creating a basin in the current Northsea that is a giant marsh, with the former coast washed down.

We just needed a background for Mad Max with boats…

Several places …

The Royal Kanadian Mutant Police are, in the Kanadian Empire, which extends through the former USA (with the notable exclusion of The Soyuz Sovietski of Florida and the Wasteland (Midwest, but does include the underwater province of Kali-Form-Yah), into Mexico, across the Barents, and hops Greenland and Iceland.

One is worldwide (a very thin population of city-states), with cultural and technology centers in former Sri Lanka, Mongolia, and Malta.

My first post apocalypse games were for Twilight 2000 and involved Australian teams moving north through the Malayan peninsula. A later set of games involved Australian units in Afghanistan in a going home scenario. Being English I might have set them in England but for the fact I expected it would have been an irradiated landscape.

I have played post apocalypse global warming games in an America where the Mississippi basin has created an inland sea and there was massive overcrowding on what land remained.
