I was eyeballing my old copy of Rally Round the King and thought it would be cool to do some middle earth wargaming.

For economic and practical reasons 1/72 is my preferred scale.

Now I think Gondorian and Rohirrim armies are quite doable in this scale. I was leaning with Byzantine types for Gondor and Slavic types for Rohan.

I've seen other suggest HaT Sea Peoples for orcs?

Any other ideas on the more fantastic races?

Also does anyone know if there are middle earth army lists floating about for RRtK or am I on my own there?

Take a look at Paul's Bods blog:

If you're not going the GW route,Hordes of the Things has DBX-style lists. For a start.

JRR Tolkein, in one of his letters, said the Rohirrim were based on the Normans in the Bayeux Tapestry

My friend John does a lot of LOTR in 1/72 plastics. I think he used some of the robinhood sets for the rangers. Hopefully he will come and post here to let you know what he has used for the various troops.

Was going to suggest Paul's blog. He just updated with Elves and Numenoreans

Alliance and Caesar make numerous sets of Orcs, goblins, dwarves, elves, trolls, and other creatures so it's very easily doable in 1/72 at this point.

A bit of looking around reveals that there is plenty of options in 1/72. My issue now is coming up with the army lists for Rally Round the King.

I was thinking of modeling the Rohirrim off of Norman armies.

For Gondor I'm not really sure, perhaps feudal English?

At first I thought of tribal Germanics for the armies of Mordor but a bit of research revealed that they are actually fairly well organized so I'm not sure there either.

I liked Airfix Romans painted up as Orcs.

Does anyone have an opinion on how well DBM plays solo? I've found extensive resources for doing Middle Earth with that ruleset.

I'm assuming from your user name you are from Arkansas. If so are you still in Arkansas? I'm in Arkansas and I'm also gaming in 1/72.

Yep still in Arkansas. Shoot me a PM, maybe we are relatively near to each other.
