So, bought a load of Dark Alliance fantasy figures with their remarkable similarity to a well known trilogy of films (except the elves for some reason, not sure what they are supposed to look like), and thought: Now what? So, my question – what is anybody else using for complementary figures – Rohan, Gondor, Elves etc? Any good blogs out there? I see that Caesar have stopped their fantasy range, so looks like I will struggle to get heroes etc, but not a problem as I want to do massed battle games. And rules – Evil Empires, big battle version of their LotR Strategy Battle Game, or something better that captures the Tolkien experience? Thanks |

I am doing this very thing. My blog posts so far…. link MiniArt Germanic warriors are my base figures for Rohan. I'll probably add Tumbling Dice Goths and Newline Designs Goths to fill out their ranks. For Gondor I have decided on HaT for Gondor line infantry supplemented by MiniArt Roman cavalry for Knights of Dol Amoroth. Newline Designs or Tumbling Dice Late Romans legionares for armored guard troops. For rules, I've decided on Baron Wars by Barony Miniatures. They are delightfully uncomplicated rules and will cover just about anything Tolkien could possibly throw at them. |

Hey joker. I thought you were sculpting your figures. :-) |

Well 45thdiv, now that you mentioned it, There are some Rangers in the works. I have some Rangers that are "in the works" that are nothing more than Airfix Robin Hood Archers with sculpted capes/cloaks. A couple are done, one half way done and another 5-6 that need to be done. |

As long as the elves aren't equipped like the non-Tolkien ones in the film, I'll be happy ;) John T |

I'm a big fan of your blog,Bob.So inspititional.Your set ups are always simple yet elegant.A question,if you don't mind:what is the size of the hexes the game was played on,flat side to flat? 3 inches? |
Bob in Edmonton | 08 Jan 2015 7:22 p.m. PST |
Nevals, Thanks kindly. I'd guess the hexes are four inches across (face to face). They are a Hotz Mat and match the 4" geo-hex stuff I have from GHQ. thanks kindly Bob |

Bob, that is cool. Rules wise, it was interesting seeing your comment about Basic impetus not being LotR enough – too dark ages. That is an interesting balance, as the game probably should be dark ages, but with the impact of heroes – especially in Fellowship terms. I will check out some ancient/dark age rules and see if any sound like a good game, and then ponder how to make it feel LotR. Still pondering the Evil Empire's big battle set (I have a copy as my son is big on the LotR range), but my heart belongs to 1/72, hence my push in this direction. And I am so impressed by the Dark Alliance orcs and uruk-hai that I decided to take the plunge. Still not sure what to do human wise – I can see the direction you have taken, but I want to try and avoid anything too much 100YW in style – the Airfix Robin Hood set though does look good. The Mini-Art Germanic warriors are definitely right. I need to get a set, along with some other types and see how they blend size wise. Italeri do a nice set for Rohan but they look big: link compared to: link I love the pointy hat guys in these: link For the Lord of the Nazgul's human cavalry – they just look spooky to me And shame these aren't slightly shorter -they have a real dwarf feel to my eyes:

Marc, The MiniArt germanic warriors are pretty buly and will probably match well with the Italeri Gothic cavalry. Newline matches well with both the Germanics and HaT figures. John |

Managed to get a set of Caesar's Adventurers set, so now have Gandalf, Aragorn, Boromir and Legolas (along with a host of see through/glow in the dark figures – ?). Trouble is, I cannot locate any of the elves they (once) did – OOP? So what did anyone else do as substitutes? |

Elves seem to be OOP for now; Caesar just released some new fantasy sets, so I have hopes that they'll resurrect their older sets in some fashion. In the meantime, Eureka's "18mm" wood elves are pretty much 1/72 scale, apparently.
Or you can get the Alliance elves and do some headswaps with some shorter figures, if you're up for it. |

Cheers for that Mac – I will pass as I don't like them, but it did lead me to some other blogs, so a good link. Thanks. |

Resurrecting my own thread – so apologies. But Nazgul – has anyone found a good hooded figure that can act as the bad guys here in 1/72? Some sort of monk maybe? |
