I do wish Redbox had better photos on their boxes. Or that PSR covered fantasy. Wait--they do. No they don't.

Or do they? They should make up their minds.

Pauls Bods22 Sep 2016 1:04 p.m. PST

Unfortunately PSR stopped reviewing Fantasy Ages back.
A couple of the set 1 trolls in a better pic

Apparently there´s another 3 sets of trolls and an orc catapult on the way.

Cool! Thanks.

were do you buy these in the USA?

While I like these, I wish they weren't quite so much copies of GW figures, which of course are modeled after the movies. Or at least that's how they look to me.

How big are they?

Ivan DBA22 Sep 2016 4:35 p.m. PST

Those look excellent. I bet they would look great next to 15mm figures too.

D6 Junkie22 Sep 2016 4:48 p.m. PST

My exact thought Ivan!

Nice! Looking forward to the other Troll sets, and especially the Orc Catapult set. Any idea when to expect the rest to be release? Cheers!

Pauls Bods27 Sep 2016 1:18 p.m. PST

It seems as soon as Redbox Shows a couple of the masters, the sets appear in a couple of months and then a load all at once..but (it might be only at my end) it Looks like the Redbox page is down at the Moment…the pic of the box art (linked from thier page ) seems to have gone

Perhaps they´ve been trolled ?

I`ll get my coat…

A review of the set and some decent pics

Thanks for the link,Paul. Wow,those guys are big! Looks like they could conceivably be used with 25mm human figures. I never pictured Tolkien's trolls as twice the size of men,and PJ overdid everything anyway--look at his Oliphants.

Now,has anyone dealt with these Scale-Model-Kits.com people? I asked about them a while ago,but didn't get a response from anyone who has:

As you can see, their prices are low--$9 a box, although the "free shipping" is for orders over $200 USD, IIRC.

BTW--I just clicked on the Red Box ua site and got a malware warning from McAfee. Anyone know anything about this? Are they actually Ukrainian?

Pauls Bods16 Oct 2016 2:49 a.m. PST

They are big, bigger than I imagined they would be, possibly too big?

The RedBox site keeps crashing lately or showing Malware but they are Ukrainian. At least the web code, au, suggests Ukraine and they are flagged up on a lot of sites, Toy soldier HQ, Hobby Bunker etc as being out of the Ukraine.
Try finding a Business address though, result = nothing.
The closest I found is that they deal through Orion Miniatures
TMP link
but still no definate address.

Scale-Model-Kits.com ? The Prices look good but then to risk $200 USD to get cheaper stuff? Question is, how much would the postage be for a couple of sets cost to test out thier reliability and would that massively Offset the Initial low Price per set ?
Me, I prefer to take a hit on Price and deal with someone I´ve dealt with before and trust rahter than risk a unknown seller. They (the new alliance sets) haven´t appeared on offer, even pre-order here, but I can wait :-)

SMK claims they've been operating for 6 years, which,if true, would(I'd hope) argue against their being rip-off artists. I'll probably search around on some plastic kit forums,to see what I can find out.

Doesn't LotR refer to the trolls and ents as being around 14 foot tall, so twice man height is pretty good.

Mind you, in Moria it is a huge orc chieftain not a troll that skewers Frodo – honestly, no research undertaken by PJ from primary sources grin (just kidding)

Want !

Hafen von Schlockenberg01 Nov 2016 7:28 a.m. PST

Marc--yep,all we get of the troll in Moria is the arm and shoulder, and the foot Frodo stabs.

I reread the Treebeard chapter, and you're right,"at least fourteen feet tall".

OTOH, Pippin at the Black Gate stabs the troll "deep into the vitals",which might be difficult for a four-foot hobbit against a 14 foot troll, except that the troll was bent over the fallen Beregond,so still a possibility. OTOOH, the trolls are here described as "taller and broader than Men",leaving things ambiguous. I'd think, however, that if they were really twice man-height,Tolkien would likely have emphasized the fact.

Admittedly, I may be "over-reading". And there are trolls, and trolls. Maybe the troll in Moria didn't come into the chamber because he couldn't fit through the door!
