Mr Shaun you're just a gaming recently…good on you!
Glad to hear that your call sign is not the rear end of a terrier in a leather g-string…I'm sorry but when you start hanging around with a certain crowd it's hard to know what to expect ;)

Shaun Travers14 Aug 2014 5:46 a.m. PST

I have about 15 minutes left on the comic report of my second ww2 20mm skirmish game. But I am going to bed now. So this time tomorrow it should be up, barring real life events.

I am actually getting a hankering for 2mm or 3mm ancient figures to use on a 1'x1' board that I can use on the train and at work. I blame Jack for the suggestion, and some recent posts by others on their own small portable boards has not helped! I think the project has merit. It also goes with an idea on how to simplify my own ancient rules so they will play in less than 20 minutes and require no markers.

War Panda14 Aug 2014 10:03 a.m. PST

Sounds like a very interesting venture Shaun; keep us informed…I like the idea for a portable "5 men in Normandy" type game…I miss my wargaming when I'm camping.

Have you any links to examples of the portable board your talking about?

I have a fold up chess set that I bought recently for myself and my 7 year old and I bet it wouldn't be far off those dimensions…it wasn't that expensive

War Panda14 Aug 2014 10:12 a.m. PST

BTW Jack I've had lots of private chats with experienced Nappy 6mm users and the undoubtable consensus is there's a huge visual difference with Alder…

I'll keep you informed but Im negotiating with a commission painter "Old Guard" (from the Ukraine…yeah get your orders in quick) that comes highly recommended for 6mm. I intent to get a help up on this little beastie while painting an opposing army myself…

I'll keep you updated…

I thought Id get a small AAR posted but unfortunately my spare time is taken up with researching this project…really want to try out 5 men still…

RWANDA PA14 Aug 2014 12:00 p.m. PST

Beautiful war report. What are the rules do you use

RWANDA PA14 Aug 2014 2:49 p.m. PST

Thank you

Just Jack14 Aug 2014 8:31 p.m. PST

Rwanda Pa – Welcome, and Kyote-Blue is correct, I've been playing with Ivan ("Weasel")'s ruleset, "Five Men in Normandy," which have been quite fun. I vow to get in a game or three this weekend and get them posted here on TMP.

Please ignore all the other commentary here, we've formed our own little 'club' here on TMP and like to see how much we can embarrass ourselves ;)

Kyote – I'd love to see your FOW Tour of Duty stuff, if that helps 'push' you in a direction this weekend. And someday I'll get up there to get in a game with you. I'll even bring some 10mm stuff so you can see what REAL wargaming looks like. Though, to keep you from crying, I'll let you bring the hills ;)

Shaun – You stated on my blog that you hate me; well, as you've gotten four games in recently, I return the favor, I'm green with envy. I just haven't been able to find any time. This little baby of mine needs almost as much attention as Panda…

Ivan – We haven't forgotten you brother, hang in there. For me, a big part of getting enjoyment out of TMP has been learning to stop reading everything, it's just not worth letting some Bleeped texter on the internet get you twisted up. Though it still happens…

Panda – This is becoming a real problem for me. I see or hear or read something that gets me interested in a period, and I swear I literally get a fever for it, constantly searching the internet for pics, comments, and reviews, constantly staring at the manufacturer's website and devising dozens of procurement plans (surely you know what I mean: they offer 'regiment packs,' 'division packs,' etc… If I buy two of those and three of these my wife probably won't notice, and I should be able to just squeeze out the mortgage payment; let's call that 'package A.' Now, package B will be…).

I can't stop thinking about these Adlers. Which, right there, warrants a sidebar conversation:

Hey, knucklehead, it's great that you're aggravating the hell out of Leon by telling him his 6mm guys are 10mm, but have you noticed that you've made about half a dozen posts referring to ADLER miniatures as "ALDER" miniatures, including in your posts to Mr. ADLER himself!? Nice work, Panda, a real smoothie with the folks ;) Sidebar closed.

I can't stop thinking about these Adlers, and I'm really scared that I'm going to spend a bunch of money on another project I'll never finish, leaving me with 10mm, 6mm Baccus, and 6mm Adlers in the garage. Wargaming is a sickness! I'd previously made up my mind to go with Pendraken, but I've got yet another case of 'oooh, shiny…'

Now I'm off to stare at the Adler webpage for a few minutes before I hit the rack… Take care fellas.

V/R,
Jack

My comic report is up. Only 6 pages. Bluer was definitely the winner on this thread for AARs, but at least I am not last.

Thank you Just Jack and kyotebluer than blue and club

Just Jack15 Aug 2014 11:12 a.m. PST

Rwanda Pa,

You're welcome, we try to have fun on this forum and with our games. The 'club' is rather informal, we don't even have a name yet, maybe you can help.

That's very interesting that you're in Kigali, I don't think we've seen anyone on TMP from there before, but that's what is great about TMP, it brings folks together from all over the world.

"Is just for white man." Our club doesn't have a whole lot of rules; as a matter of fact, I don't think it has any rules other than the TMP forum rules. We accept all races, nationalities, and creeds, so long as you have a sense of humor and like to talk about wargaming.

"you like goats for what." No, I don't think any of us are farmers, we just make fun of War Panda because he's gotten himself into trouble by getting a few goats pregnant in the last year. But he's sorted it out with the authorities and from what I understand, everyone's happy (and the baby goats are taken care of).

Take care.

V/R,
Jack

War Panda15 Aug 2014 11:20 a.m. PST

@Rwanda Pa
Get out while you can Rwanda Pa! Get out while you have some some decency left!
And yes Just Jack is a millionaire goat farmer from Texas…thats why we give him a "hard" time about goats…he just loves em! Seriously though he's a very generous man but not when it comes to his "babies"

@ Jester Jack
You don't know how many people I've totally Bleeped texted off since making enquiries in Nappies…yes not just nice Mister Alder but lots and lots of others too!
And yes it is a gift…
But honestly Adler are amazing…for every enemy I've made really good friends with….okay for every ten enemies I've made I've made one correspondence with extremely helpful people in Nappies. (You I believe are very familiar with people in nappies)

I'm really looking forward to getting some Adler and painting them up. Maybe don't order a bunch of 10mm before you give Alder more consideration.

Honestly (joking aside…) I'm not generally a fan of mini minis but for recreating proper Napoleonic battles I really believe you have the perfect balance with Alder (which are a completely different critter than the rest of 6mm)

I don't want to start with a mini scale that in the future I regret because it limits the same of battle I can create.
I also don't want to start with a mini scale that in the future I regret because it limits the quality of its detail and painting potential. After I have a decent amount of minis to stage a proper battle I'd like to be able to actually enjoy painting up a couple of battalions. I enjoyed painting Napoleonics in the past but the magnitude of the project (at a time in my life where sports were a massive part of my life) was overwhelming.

Anyway I just love the era with a passion and in fact I've decided to watch Waterloo with my 3 year old and my niece…(that Scots Grey charge is my favourite movie scene ever….)

Anyway I've actually stopped considering 10mm once I've seen the potential of Alder (the battle manoeuvre and footprint as well as the visual potential for 6mm is too great an advantage over anything larger.)

But if you've already a lot of 10mm than I'm just full of it and go with those…

RWANDA PA15 Aug 2014 11:46 a.m. PST

Just Jack is a millionaire goat farmer from Texas

Just Jack, parlez-vous français? Je parle français. Anglais no good

That is beautiful. We love goats in Kigali.

Chèvre de Fouta Djallon; chèvre guinéenne; chèvre naine.

Origins. An achondroplastic dwarf (Figure 50) with lack of ossification at the cartilage joints. Probably evolved specifically in response to the conditions of the humid forest zone by selection of recessive genes for dwarfism. More or less trypanotolerant.

in our church we export this beautiful animal to USA.

we get goats from USA.

@Rwanda Pa

ahem…I googled your goat and they look great:

Hey great to have you back Ivan!!!

Just Jack15 Aug 2014 9:16 p.m. PST

Dem's a lotta eggs, Ivan!

I can only imagine what Panda's computer screen must look like after he spent the entire evening perusing the internet for a new breed of goats…

Sorry, Rwanda Pa, je parle un petit peut. Really, really really petit. The most I can seem to remember is "Tu aller au bibliotheque, ou tu aller la plage?" High school was a long time ago…

V/R,

Weasel15 Aug 2014 9:54 p.m. PST

I always remember that line from the Guns N Roses song "Civil War" though the album notes do state it's from the movie.

I always remember that line from the Guns N Roses song "Civil War" though the album notes do state it's from the movie.

Yep a footy team mate of mine would always play that song before games

really really really petit

So you're really, really, really (yes folks thats three "really's") SMALL!!!
That's interesting Jack and not terribly surprising but why would you have to announce it to the world!

<I can only imagine what Panda's computer screen must look like after he spent the entire evening perusing the internet for a new breed of goats…

Sometimes you actually make me laugh Jack…and that wasn't one of those times…you bastard (by the way for those unable to read that censured word…Give me a "B"…give me an "A" …

Will Jack enjoy the Chèvre de Fouta's?

I would say so Rwanda Pa…

Thank you War Panda for photograph. My goats are beautiful more.

And you're very welcome. In fact you're a very welcome addition to the club. I think Jack would like to know more about your goats. (its the only reason he comes here…ahem)

Blue I'd be very interested in the Nam games…I really liked Jacks Nam AAR's…

War Panda15 Aug 2014 11:46 p.m. PST

Any ideas of where you'd get some modern figs…even plastic ones. I'd like to try Ivan's modern rules at some stage and while I realize I could proxy use WW2 I'd like to use the real thing

Shaun Travers16 Aug 2014 4:35 a.m. PST

I have just spent and hour of so today looking at the Irregular Minis 2mm ancient figures and painting guides etc. For use on a really small table. And looking on ebay at painted 6mm ancients too, just in case. I have got better and resisted delving into another project. But I am sure the urge will be back before the end of the year.

Panda, I've realised I have not sent you links to the small battle boards:

FlyXwire16 Aug 2014 6:45 a.m. PST

Shaun, I checked out Mark's (Extra Crispy's) battlefield in a box project, and one of the do-overs he mentioned, was to try a method of limiting the base flocking material from coming off his box lid battlefield. My suggestion would be to buy a hobby railroad mat, and to cut out all the pieces that would be grass textured from the mat roll. A few manufacturers that make these static grass type mats are Busch, Heki, and Noch, and Woodland Scenics makes a few flocked types. The hill tops could also be covered by the mat sheet so that their surface matches the battlefield grass too (as long as the hilltops are flat). I've also used the railroad grass sheet to make the primary base covering on many of my figure stands for a number of historical collections, and if it matches the basic game board material you know the figure stands will match the game board grass too.

A few examples of grass mat boards and bases:

Here's the Command & Colors board game Battle Cry, which I *3D* converted for playing with unit "flats", and using railroad hobby matting for the hex board and terrain overlays:

Just a thought?

Weasel16 Aug 2014 8:53 a.m. PST

Qrf has tons of moderns in 15mm. Peter pig does a few as well.

In 10mm I think pendraken does modern as well.

Also, technically 1946 is "post war" :) I've been meaning to do some early cold war gaming for a while.

War Panda16 Aug 2014 11:41 a.m. PST

Shaun thank you for the links…it looks very workable and would be great for camping trips

FlyXwire I like your 3D hex terrain conversion. I think I see some nice hills there in the background too. Hope others here noticed them to cough Jack cough…The matching grass on the hexes gives a really nice coordinated finish

Thanks Weasel for the info. I read over 5 Men in Normandy last night and I plan on playing with my niece with the intention of an AAR…
I really loved some of your concepts. Looking forward to trying them out.

FlyXwire16 Aug 2014 12:31 p.m. PST

You're right WP, you can cover hex-shaped hills with grass mat material too. The hill cores I crafted were made of Styrofoam and then sprayed with adhesive, then the mat sheet adhered to the hill tops first, then worked out to each corner, with the excess sheet pinched together at the hex "points" and snip off with scissors.

I've made more rounded hills since using the Games Workshop battle mats, and because these mats are synthetic fabric, they can actually stretch to rounded contours. Unfortunately, Game Workshop had discontinued selling these excellent game mats.

Here's my buddy Chris F. pushing some AmRev units on my Hold The Line conversion setup, showing a GW battlemat with rounded hex-hills on top, which were covered with the same mat material.

War Panda16 Aug 2014 12:56 p.m. PST

What a perfect setup for maximizing table-space and it looks fantastic. It's a shame GW have stopped making them but as you mentioned earlier there are many good alternative model railway ones (but perhaps not the same stretchy fabric) Great job BTW with covering those hills…they look great…I'm a sucker for the table's terrain to have a certain uniformed look. For me at least the table ascetics really increases the whole gaming experience.

If I'm to try anything for a mobile table I'd definitely use that as the model to copy thumbs up

Hopefully your example might inspire Just Jack to try a little harder

Just Jack's philosophy of wargaming is that the table is purely functional. Here's an example of Jack gaming the charge of the Light Brigade

]link
He really is an example for us all here….we're very proud of his progress recently:

Jack's reenactment of Custer's Last Stand at Little Big Horn using Wild West Skirmish Rules:

picture

FlyXwire16 Aug 2014 1:50 p.m. PST

One last thing on the mats……you can use bleach to spot them, for creating a more varied ground appearance. You can even bleach out your road net. There's not too much that's cheaper than bleach, but you'll only get one attempt on the mat you're treating, so mistakes could turn expensive quickly.

Weasel16 Aug 2014 2:34 p.m. PST

War Panda made me nearly roll off the chair laughing :)

RWANDA PA16 Aug 2014 3:04 p.m. PST

Just Jack would you need more goats? You like them?

Shaun Travers16 Aug 2014 9:49 p.m. PST

Fly,

I actually based my first 2'x3' gaming board with railway grass mat. My first 2'x2' board, that I still use for some of my games, has railway grass mat. I have flocked some more recent 2'x2' boards but in future I would use railway grass mat – less shine when taking photos and I think it looks better. I have a couple of small hills I did in the leftover grass mat from 15 years ago but I did not do a great job and so look ok, but not great.

I even use railway grass mats in larger games – my recent solo games on half a table tennis table used railway grass mat and my even more recent game with a 9 year old on a full sized table tennis table was all railway grass mat.

I am a great believer in railway grass mat. I briefly strayed, but I am back in the fold.

I would link to some pictures on my blog but I am a slacker :-)

And my report on Warhammer Quest with the children is up:

TMP link

Two more AARs in the pipeline, and I feel some more games may be played this week. Hopefully. Ancients or spaceships.

FlyXwire17 Aug 2014 6:26 a.m. PST

Shaun, you've got a terrific blog site, and no gaming slake going on there!

War Panda17 Aug 2014 9:48 a.m. PST

FlyXwire what scale is that last photo? There's so much detail there. Did you model each "drop down" terrain piece. Again they blend right in with the main board. Beautiful stuff.

Shaun I'm looking forward to checking out that Warhammer Quest…thanks for posting that..I'm off to check it out soon.

Ancients or spaceships…how diverse is that gaming repertoire!

War Panda made me nearly roll off the chair laughing :)

Be honest Ivan you were fairly plastered at the time and you were kind of rolling off that chair before you even read that evil grin

Well I had my first game of 5 men in Normandy last night and I should have an AAR soon!

Weasel17 Aug 2014 10:32 a.m. PST

You're not drunk if you can still lie down on the floor without falling off!

FlyXwire17 Aug 2014 4:35 p.m. PST

Thanks WP! That pic is of my 10-12mm Eastern Front stuff (I try to collect as much of this in 1/144th scale, and then supplement with inf. and hvy. weapon models as needed in 10mm – 150-160th scale). The building bases were made out of epoxy putty, and the fences were set right into each piece as they cured. Also, the buildings are detachable, and their foundations were pressed into the putty to note their locations on the bases, but more usefully, to mark the building(s) outlines, so that they can be removed during gameplay so that spotted units occupying them can sit level, and not have to be pitched up against a house. Having made my own 1/285th scale buildings years ago, one thing I determined not to do again with the 12mm collection was to permanently attach my buildings to their yard areas. As example, I recently broke out the micro-armor again and did a scenario in this scale with those previously made buildings, and as you can see from the below photo, things can get a little "pitchy" when the players have to set their stands amongst them.

War Panda18 Aug 2014 12:07 a.m. PST

Fly do you have a blog site? Again brilliant. Love the way you've done the forest…have you a tutorial? I'm thinking of doing 6mm Nap and I think they'd look great!

BTW I've posted a AAR with 5 Men in Normandy!

Blue I'm checking out that game right now…only 2 mins to post before TMP closes for maintenance

FlyXwire18 Aug 2014 5:54 a.m. PST

WP, I need to get a blog site (instead of barraging TMP here with my pics instead). :)))

I don't have a woods-making tutorial, but they do on the Altar of Freedom ACW rule's website:

link

I made my forest layers by cutting out their outlines from 6mm thick "Fun Foam" sheets (I use fun foam for making my 15mm figures stands too – easier to grab and move). Fun foam is easy to cut, and the holes for the tree trunks can just be poked into the foam. I'd explore using the "cluster" (chunk-type) foliage to flock them, instead of the finer type I used, with maybe a combination of both being best to get total coverage.

I first saw these forest canopy pieces being used by Nick Wilkowski's in one of his Napoleonic games at Recruits in Kansas City, and thought they were a really neat (and useful idea) -

Weasel18 Aug 2014 9:23 a.m. PST

FlyXWire – Just sign up for Blogger or some such. Its free and they're super stupid-easy to use, including adding pictures and whatnot :)

Have you guys ever forgotten a miniature under those tree canopies?

FlyXwire18 Aug 2014 10:46 a.m. PST

Thanks for tip Weasel!

I could see a stand or vehicle getting lost on one of those wood sections that have the platforms underneath them like Nick uses (bet it's happened ever during a game). :))) My woods pieces just rest on their trunks, and the woods areas are also outlined on my game mat. There's potential for hiding troops and such on those bases underneath the trees – could even have players set up their hidden deployments directly onto these terrain sections (if they're big enough), and then place the pieces where they're supposed to go on the map prior to the game start.

Weasel18 Aug 2014 11:43 a.m. PST

Somehow that seems it would make for the perfect vietnam game, where neither side has accurate intel on what forces they are facing and where.

War Panda18 Aug 2014 11:50 a.m. PST

No Fly I'm serious I love those trees/woods…fun foam?!? I'll have to do a goggle search that one… I havent heard of it before…

BTW Fly Weasel is right 'Blogger' is real easy to start with (even I managed it) and by the looks of your photos you've plenty to share!

Blue sorry about the link my friend but I just saw you visited already :)
