Finally found the time to work on my 6mm scifi board.
It's meant for small solo skirmish games .
Everything is magnetised so I can easily pick it up and put it aside and maybe continue the game later.

Thinking of doing a second binder for larger games.

I like it! Clever idea. Is the magnet strong enough to hang the board on a wall and play?

Pete Melvin19 Jun 2014 6:37 a.m. PST

Thats a great idea

cloudcaptain19 Jun 2014 6:49 a.m. PST

Slick work!

Patrice19 Jun 2014 8:02 a.m. PST

Excellent.

Now, I must adapt this idea to the 1.80m x 5.00m terrains I prefer to use :)

Stealth100019 Jun 2014 8:04 a.m. PST

Respect. That is very inventive and looks great.

Zargon19 Jun 2014 9:23 a.m. PST

The more I think us gamers are a crazy lot, the more I see it verified :o) But that is still the cutest and ingenuous idea I've seen for a while. Just makes you want one for the hell of it.
Very well done stroezie.. BTW see the troops are based individually, what rules do you use? And from who do you get the actual buildings etc.
Cheers and thanks for a great 'little' looking project

I feel the badlands area is the best, can't put my finger on why though!

;)

Wow, thanks for all the positive comments everybody, it really helps to keep me motivated.
I'll try to answer all your questions.
First of, all the scenery and figures have been magnetised with magnetic rubberised paper, this was also used to make the sidewalks.
The binder and the top of the sidewalks were painted with magnetic paint.
This is strong enough so things don't slide of when you bump the board or pick it up, if you shake it some of the pieces will come of though.
The city buildings are from Brigade models and the shacks on the other side of the canal are from Angel Barracks.
Rules are Gruntz adapted for 6mm (1 inch = 1cm) with a combination of THW Star Army and Squadron Forwads from Too Fat Lardies added on as a campaign system.

Brilliant!

This is really really good. I am always impressed by what can be done on a small scale. The use of the binder is inspired. Thanks for sharing and I may borrow some of those ideas if I ever get around to doing something similar. I want to, but I have too many projects already!

stroezie16 Jul 2014 12:04 a.m. PST

Here's a little update,
I finished the second binder and made some more terrain.

The buildings on the left are from Ral Partha Europe the rest was scratch build.

The farm with watertower and the first field, the crops are magnetised and can be removed individually, they still need some finishing touches;

Some more shots of Cherry blossom heights.

Disclaimer: Cherry tree idea totally stolen from Mr Harold's awesome 15mm city board ;-)

Tis very cool.
Has great gaming potential, a great them and us sort of feel.
Poor versus Rich.
Very good idea.

Gaz004516 Jul 2014 8:06 a.m. PST

Just needs some 'west bank' checkpoints on the bridges…………but all in all inspirational stuff……….I have the will but lack the skill! ( & time & cash!)

stroezie17 Jul 2014 2:36 a.m. PST

@ Gaz0045
Thanks, I hadn't thought of that, checkpoints would be awesome for senarios. They are on my to do list now.

@ Angel Barracks
Order sent for a bigger wretched hive of scum and villainy accros the canal ;-))

Angel Barracks17 Jul 2014 5:21 a.m. PST

Love what you did!

Would a similarly-sized flat cardboard box work also? Perhaps the sides on the box might keep the two playing surfaces from touching?

@ Cachique Caribe
I tried with a very similar box but the magnetic paint completely warped it so I turned to the binders looking for something a bit more water resistant.

@ stroezie

You ought to write up a "how-to" post detailing the steps you used to create these portable city boards for PLANET ARES VI wink

stroezie27 Jul 2014 10:27 p.m. PST

@ Maj Diz Aster
Oh I will, as soon as I can get my hands on a matching binder. I'd like to add a small industrial section to the city side an expand the Junkertown, forrest and farm areas.
