Does anybody wargame the Dutch revolt against Spain in the late 16th and early 17th centuries?

This has been on my 'maybe' list for sometime now, but a casual conversation with a friend has caused it to rise to the top.

I know that Minifigs and Essex do a 15mm range, so the toys should not be a problem. However, I would like to hear any ideas, experience of this period.

Thanks to all in advance.

The very best you can check out is the Perfect Captain's Spanish Fury rules that includes the Dutch Revolt. The Captain is this genius insane dude and his friends that sit down and make superior games they give for free. It costs a bit to print them, but the rules are free. Take a look

I tried the late 16th century part in 25mm a while ago using Foundry, Old Glory, Graven Images and Redoubt enterprises figures, but I don't think anyone makes perfect figures for it in 25mm.

I think in 15mm the best figures look to be Khurasans Elizabethans:

I think they may have Spanish planned as well.

For ideas some of the older accounts of the English captains that fought are quite good if you don't mind reading the old style English:

Parkers classic study on the Spanish army is also a great read:

I can confirm I've been working on Spanish for Khurasan. Pike, arquebusiers and command are done and being cast (I think) and just today I've finished some musketeers for the English and Spanish.

Spanish horse and generic artillery will likely be next. Whether specific Dutch figures will be done is up to the boss.

Curiously never having really given the period much thought I am getting drawn into it myself. Ordered a book on the Revolt last night, and I'm having a look at Warlord's Pike and Shotte for rules.

I am wargaming the late 16th century. While the armies COULD be used for the ca. 1584-1612 portion of the Dutch revolt, they were not specifically intended for that purpose.

For the French army in 1560s and 70s in the Wars of Religion you might find my book, The King's Army, Cambridge University Press, interesting.

I do.
I can only adviese old gory, war of religion and foundry!
For ships i use wodden souvinier ships which you can buy in Amsterdam ( beverwijk) or vlissingen or rozendaal and waterline them.
They fit perfect to the 25mm and are all wood constuction with rigging.
Spanish models are less frequend buti have a Gallion and the Santa maria is fored into service too. :)

You can keep to orginal arment or put old gory of foundy guns on the models. Make sure your armies are based on very small bases as you can use all dismounted figures for land and sea actions.

The Batavia can be bought at Lelystaad.

The Malta souvinier store in Valetta is also great for siege guns in that scale for the wars of religion!

Greetings

Clibinarium is there any chance of some photos of the Spanish.

I seem to have overlooked previewing them, so I don't have any good photographs. Here's a group shot, though I think a number of the figures were tidied up a bit after this was taken, so the final figures might be very slightly different.

Thank you. They look marvellous, I will order some as soon as they become available.

Thanks for the kind words. I am worried though that this is overtaking the OP's question; I too am interested in hearing from anyone who's gamed this period, it seems somewhat overshadowed by the later part of the war that was subsumed into the currently popular TYW?

Stumbled on to this yesterday, latest Deperata Ferro Special, looks very interesting. I think I'll get a copy, even though I don't speak Spanish;

Yes looks like it should be worth it just for the pretty pictures.

I started wargaming the Dutch Revolt with a 15mm army to refight Nieuwpoort 1600, intially made up of Mnifigs and later Essex.
Meanwhile I started collecting a 25mm army for the 1570's, being confronted with a lack of suitable figures and uncontinued series. Typically a not so favourite period.
Citadel/Foundry has an old but still good looking series, in true 25mm.
Old Glory started a wars of religion series but didn't finish it. It comprises beuatifully sculpted 28mm Germans in Pluderhosen, but lacking arquebusiers; only shot with muskets on rests.
TAG has started a good looking Tudor and Stuart range.
Pendraken has some Dutch troops in their Elizabethan range.

Typical Dutch troops are not much needed I think for the 16th century as most troops were mercenaries. For the Militia and Beggars some typical Dutch look would be welcomed and of course Good germans with Pluderhosen in the early years, gradually changing to the more common baggy trousers.
For the 17th century most ranges of the 30 Years War might be used I think.
During the entire period Spanish troops distinguished most by their Morion type helmet.
