We are very pleased to give you the first look at a line of later 18th to early 19th century pirates in 18mm scale, to go along with the substantial ranges of SYW, AWI and Napoleonic figurines. They can be used onboard ships of course but also as landing parties in ground games.

Here is the first set of pirates:

picture

And seen below we've also had a set of personalities made -- Rachel Wall, who lured merchantmen in so she and her crew could hack them up and steal their cargo, and the infamous Captain William Buckinhat, a huge man whose physical challenge (his leg was bitten off by a sperm whale whilst he was still a whaler) does not prevent him from being a redoubtable adversary with the cutlass:

picture

Any ideas for additional pieces? Focus is on historical accuracy, but as you can see from the personalities we're not above being a bit playful around the edges. grin

Sculpted by that desperate privateer hisself, Guilford Mike Broadbent.

Well, how about a cabin boy ala Treasure Island?

Maybe a couple of pirates with half-pikes?

Lupulus06 Dec 2013 10:58 a.m. PST

Is that 18mm to the eye or to the top of the head?

LoudNinjaGames06 Dec 2013 11:10 a.m. PST

These are an amazing set of greens. Some of then icest pirates I've seen.

Maybe a couple of pirates with half-pikes?

Also, pirates with muskets!

LoudNinjaGames06 Dec 2013 12:49 p.m. PST

I would say there is plenty of room for more generic pirate crew with mixed weapons – cutlass, pikes, axes, even simple clubs and the like.

If you are looking for more personalities, don't forget pirates of ethnicity and interesting physical stature- tall, portly, burly, etc.. Also handy ship's personnel might be cool like a doctor/sawbones, cook, bellowing bosun, etc.

Oh my, these are fantastic! Really! You are truly hitting all of my ADD hotspots on 15mm miniatures. I think this is a great scale to do pirate and shipboard actions. Plus I would love to do a HOTT themed army of pirates too :-)

Now for the next question, who makes ships close to 1/100 scale?

Broglie06 Dec 2013 1:50 p.m. PST

Don't forget gun crews, barrels, treasure chests, pirates with shovels, belaying pins and of course a captain with a curled beard maybe even with a parrot on his shoulder. Government troops might be handy or even customs men or press gangs.

Scorpio06 Dec 2013 1:53 p.m. PST

Is that 18mm to the eye or to the top of the head?

I was wondering this as well. Are these closer to regular scale-creeped 15mm, or closer to 18mm like Blue Moon's offerings?

Scorpio06 Dec 2013 2:08 p.m. PST

Additional pieces:

Islander harpooner who may or may not be a cannibal
Fearless Arab swashbuckler
British navy/pirate hunters for the crown

And if you haven't read about Ching Shih, let me pass along:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ching_Shih

And of course, fantasy expansion, to include mermaids, sirens, giant crabs, etc.

I can't see the pics at work but will more than likely pick these up…..your rep preceeds you! You could take a look at the Old Glory 25mm pirate range – some great ideas in there.

Half pikes, boarding axes, maybe a grappling hook guy.

devsdoc06 Dec 2013 4:34 p.m. PST

Gun crews, or maybe gun crews

These look superb – though I suspect they are too big for my tastes. (I'm a 15mm guy and believe 18mm to be the invention of the Devil). In terms of what is missing I would say parrots, monkeys, cabin boys, a ship's cook and serving wenches (for R&R ashore). You might also think of varying the racial mix a bit and add some Afro-Caribbean or North African types. Everyone seems to be armed with swords and pistols so I think a few muskets and blunderbusses wouldn't go amiss. There also seems to be a distinct lack of people with hooks instead of hands.

But apart from that – top drawer!

looks awesome

I've got a few, spare, 1/100th scale vessels for sale, e.g. the Black Pearl (can also serve as Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge), as well as a Chinese Junk. Both are Disney, kid's toys, and no longer available for sale (I've never seen them listed on eBay even). The wood grain detailing on them, especially of the Black Pearl, is superb.

All are brand new, still sealed in their original packaging, so would make great kids gifts too (you know, for the young ones).

They come with three 30mm – 32mm crew figures also, which are very nicely sculpted, and painted, from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series.

Both are just under a foot long in length. You can see how nicely they match up with 15mm figs (shown for scale, and not included in the sale), based upon the Peter Pig Pirate figs, on deck. The PP cannons will also match up nicely with the openings in the deck railings, if you want to "up-gun" your pirate vessel.

As you can see, there's lots of room on board, to play out 1:1 boarding actions as well, with your figures.

I converted one from a three-masted vessel to a two-masted brig, by removing the stern mast, for a slightly different look. You can see that in the photo of the gun salvo being fired at close range.

I'm asking $20 USD each, plus shipping at cost, via US Priority Mail.

The top three pirates come with the Black Pearl, and the bottom three come with the Junk.

There are several plastic kits in the 1/120 to 1/72 range. There's eg the Revell HMS Bounty in 1/110 link

I was going to suggest skeleton pirates, but since you want historical then I guess they are out. :-(

Do these match the height of the Blue Moon figs? These are much better than the BM figures IMO, but I already have them.

Henry Martini08 Dec 2013 10:03 p.m. PST

SMER has a pirate ship kit in 1/120 scale: The Black Falcon.

TamsinP09 Dec 2013 6:12 a.m. PST

Mister Tibbles – Rebel Minis do a pack of skeleton pirates.

Jon – those figures look great. As others have commented, a few with muskets, half-pikes etc would be good to add to the range.

Pyrate Captain17 Dec 2013 5:05 p.m. PST

Revell's Constitution in 1/96th. I think Heller might have made some kits in that scale. If you look there is really a lot out there.

VonBlucher18 Dec 2013 6:35 a.m. PST

Blue Moon does Pirate ships.

I would love these first (previewed back in August 2013):

But these things don't happen when announced. As Khurasan Jon says below:

"They are mine to release if and when I want."

Actually I said above this was a first look. There wasn't any indication of a release date.

GGouveia07 Jan 2015 9:02 a.m. PST

Yes we know that. We are hoping they are eventually released as they are brilliant.

Jimboba07 Jan 2015 10:58 a.m. PST

Guaranteed customer here! (If you were looking for a consensus of approval).

As to ships, despite the size, I've converted a couple of the Megablok Pirate ships for sea bound deck skirmishing – larger size means greater deck space at 15mm. Spot on for 25/28/32 tho.

Haven't finished enough pirates yet to justify pics yet.
