QUESTION

What if I did the following . . .

1) Take a beveled Warhammer Chariot Base (50mm x 100mm, or about 2" by 4"):

picture
picture

2) Turn that base upside down, so that the narrower side rests on the bottom;

3) Fill the space with Green Stuff; and

4) Prepare a hut to sit on top of the filled side

So . . . Do you think it would work as the hull of a PA house-boat of sorts?

Of course, the huts on top would be as rustic as these:

I'm curious to see what you guys think of that crazy idea.

Thanks.

How thick are those bases anyway?

I can't recall at the moment, but hope you guys can tell me.

Thanks.

I think it is a good idea, and it is only crazy if it doesn't work wink

Cacique Caribe27 Oct 2009 2:04 p.m. PST

Then I better make it work, right? :)

I think I would buy a model kit of oil drums like the ones from Tamiya. They come in 2 halves and could be placed flat side down and connected together to act as pontoons. Then you just have to put a base of some kind across the top and build your superstructure.

Cacique Caribe27 Oct 2009 2:12 p.m. PST

Leidang,

Thanks. I was thinking of that too! I didn't want to have the "houseboats" all look the same, so that's perfect.

And I could also use the half drums as floats for something like this, between some of the "houseboats":

And some of the beveled WH chariot and giant bases could be used to make a few loating gardens like these:

Humm…. Well Dan, you got me thinking about doing that in 28mm for a zombie game soon….

Gee…. Thanks for the idea…. *mutter* jeeeze another cool project inspired by Dan *mutter*

Aren't the Tamiya drums going to be too big for 15mm?

leidang27 Oct 2009 3:28 p.m. PST

emu2020 -

You are correct. I need to RTFT (Read the …….. title).

You might be able to find drums in HO scale that would work. May have to cut them in half.

Great Idea. The only problem may be it may a bit thin – sonot much freeboard (the distance between water and the top of the boat's side). Though from the east asian looking stuff you posted, that may not be a problem.

Eli Arndt27 Oct 2009 5:08 p.m. PST

Mishima, after you add the stuff to the top, you might get a little more out of it.

I had thought of doing something similar using an HO- or O-scale model railroad barge as a starting point, like one of these: link

I actually went so far as to buy one at a discount a few years back – I think it's a Sheepscot Models kit, but I don't feel like digging it out to check. But it's such a beautiful kit, now I hesitate to convert it.

I always though a houseboat would be a good way to survive a zombie outbreak, as long as you had some way of keeping the dang things from climbing up your anchor chain. Like one of those rat-proof disks, but a lot bigger.

Eli Arndt27 Oct 2009 7:00 p.m. PST

If zombies can't climb walls and barely manage stairs, then how can they make it up an anchor chain?

khurasanminiatures27 Oct 2009 7:05 p.m. PST

I won't be making houseboats, but I'll have to make at least a few boats for They Came from Planet 15, including, if I can afford it, a tramp steamer, a small one of course, for Creature from the Black Lagoon type scenarios -- steaming down the Amazon or other river and being attacked from the water or the shore. But that's a big question mark, as the price could end up being too high.

I will definitely make zodiacs/pangas though for the heroes to rescue the female reporters/scientists/what have you. Not right away, though, Planet 15 will take a while to develop. Escargon is in the water though so needs something to menace!

chironex27 Oct 2009 7:29 p.m. PST

I'd just stick some plastic card across the top of the inverted base, rather than filling it. Though I would probably have used wood for the hull anyway.
Thinking of a conversion for Runestones shanty town card set.

CC,
Pull out your copy of Huckaberry Finn and read the description of the house boat where Jim found Hucks dead father. It was more like a two story house on a raft. It might make an interesting addition to you game.

Imagine those little barges, floating bridges, houses on stilts and all sorts of small water craft but here . . . in what used to be city streets:

Sounds like fun, but I can't see doing it myself until someone does some of the following in 15mm scale: Hawaiian Tropic Girls, Penthouse Pets, or Playboy Bunnies.

A decent gaming objective is definitely required for a houseboat party…..

It's assumptions like that, that get your brains eaten. Better safe than sorry, right?

chironex28 Oct 2009 7:22 p.m. PST

Some of the zeds end up floating. And if another vessel full of infected bumps into yours…

Top Gun Ace: if your 15mm is a bit swollen, like FoW figures, then HO figures should do ok and some mfrs do some figs for railway layouts which include a pool or a seaside.

ANOTHER crazy idea . . .

What about overturned beveled GW bases turned into a hull for a flat bottom air boat:

picture
picture

OR . . . perhaps, some of these could be flipped over and used as the basis for a hull of a small boat or canoe?

picture

What do you guys think?

CC

Cacique Caribe28 Oct 2009 8:29 p.m. PST

Aside from floating bridges, I may get these dugout canoes for some of the people that may prefer to row over to their homes:

A wood raft with a straw and log hut on it?
No, really- there used to be one going up and down the length of the Murray…

Dragon Gunner20 Nov 2009 8:39 p.m. PST

Off topic I just had an idea for a tug boat pulling several barges. The barges could have houses on them and even be fortified with sand bagged positions.

Dragon Gunner,

Excellent idea!
