Wow, just wow. You even have ours. You are an addict….

Personal logo Extra Crispy Sponsoring Member of TMP18 Sep 2009 7:28 p.m. PST

And I've read them too!

What makes it worse is I have no interested in gaming any period prior to 1700 even…I just like reading rule books I guess.

Bob in Edmonton18 Sep 2009 7:32 p.m. PST

May I ask what the purpose of collecting all of these rules is? I get that we're hobbyists and we both collect things and stuff just seems to pile up. But is there some reason you collect rule sets?

One of the guys in our club calls himself a rule collector and it always puzzled me. Unless you are using them, why have them? Assuming you don't play them all, why have 300 sets?

chuck05 Fezian18 Sep 2009 7:37 p.m. PST

Why not?

Personal logo Extra Crispy Sponsoring Member of TMP18 Sep 2009 7:37 p.m. PST

Good question. I started buying them for my business – that way when a customer wanted a unit built for, say, General de Brigade I knew how many figures, what size bases he might need, etc. But then it took on a life of its own. They live in the basement in two file cabinets so take up very little space.

On the other hand I hardly have any unpainted lead around and I don't save minis "just in case." If I don't need the last jeep in the pack I sell it, give it away, etc. So my entire unpainted lead collection would easily fit in one large storage tub.

I always ask the same about people who have 20,000 pieces of unpainted lead in boxes in the basement (I'm looking at you mweaver and neotacha). Why have stuff you know you;ll never really get to?

Buying them is bgad enough, but listing them?

AND here is another you can add to your collection:

Hi Extra Crispy!

I'm a rules addict too, but I cannot compare with you for volume.

You're cheating yourself if you don't obtain a copy of Ambush Blitz. Some excellent concepts and nice presentation.

Ahah…you haven't got a copy of "Code Napoleon" though…have ya, eh?? :)

Cheers Andy

Shock of Impact?

Rules are like the Holy Grail, you search and search but can never find the REAL thing.

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP18 Sep 2009 9:52 p.m. PST

Glad to see G.O.B.S.! on your list. Hope you enjoyed reading them, at the very least. grin

I too collect rules— in fact, I was just on the Hasbro sight today downloading their free PDFs from various games (including striking gold by finding Heroquest and the various Quest books for it, all their, all PDF, all free!).

On the other hand, I have no where near as many as you list; I do tend to look for specific genres, games or types of rules. And mostly I go for free stuff, unless I have a really strong interest.

Air Power
Flint and Steel

Am I driving you crazy yet?

Think of all the things that you could have done in the same amount of time that It took to list all of them. That is time that you can never get back. Impressive list.

Crow Bait18 Sep 2009 11:12 p.m. PST

When can we expect to see the review of all these rules on your website?

GOOD LORD MAN !! you dont have Little Wars !! the Rules that started it all.

You've not got Pike & Plunder – bit.ly/zARIr – the strain of all these purchases must be telling. :-)

Steve Johnson19 Sep 2009 7:15 a.m. PST

How can you call yourself a rules addict when you don't even have a copy of Howard Whitehouse's Science v. Pluck?

mattblackgod19 Sep 2009 8:45 a.m. PST

Nice collection. You are missing Babylons Burning, Combat Zone, Warzone and Skank.

Extra, I thought you were only supposed to give your first name at support group meetings?

:)

Allen5719 Sep 2009 10:50 a.m. PST

I dont have anywhere near the collection Mark has but I would have to say I am a rules collector/reader. I read way more than I would ever play and I enjoy reading them. I am always looking for the holy grail.

Howler19 Sep 2009 12:29 p.m. PST

Rules today, collectibles tomorrow. You're rich

nazrat19 Sep 2009 1:52 p.m. PST

"May I ask what the purpose of collecting all of these rules is?"

Because he wants them? Heck, we're ALL a little obsessive/compulsive in this hobby, aren't we? I have a lot of rules I have bought that I don't play, too. Not NEARLY as many as EC, but a fair few. I just like reading them and seeing how authors approach different eras and different situations that come up in games.

As others say above, how is it any odder than buying thousands of miniatures that never get painted or played?

nazrat19 Sep 2009 1:54 p.m. PST

"Seriously, guys. He probably has them catalogued and just copied and pasted the list."

Actually the list IS cut and pasted-- from the last two threads he started on the exact same topic. He just adds more to the list each time…

And apparently REALLY likes us all to know about it! 8)=

The first step getting help is to admit you have a problem. I think EC is trying hard to do so.

Heck with the rules though, I want to see what's in mweaver and neotacha's basement. grin

freewargamesrules19 Sep 2009 3:22 p.m. PST

I'm a rules junkie too in 1997 I set up a site to show off rules from our club members.

Then other people started sending in rules, then in 2000 I bought a domain name.

Now I link to and host over 1,000 sets of rules. Just when I think there can be no other sets of rules out there someone sends me a link to another set.

Personal logo Extra Crispy Sponsoring Member of TMP19 Sep 2009 5:21 p.m. PST

Of course I cut and paste…of course, since I sell/stock a lot of rules I had a head start with just that list. But yes, I like to read and steal good ideas from all kinds of rules sets!

Greyalexis19 Sep 2009 8:28 p.m. PST

I am impressed

rob1276319 Sep 2009 9:50 p.m. PST

What Mark you don't have a copy of Rusty's Rules.Rob

vojvoda20 Sep 2009 2:00 a.m. PST

Now Damn it you have gone and done it. I had a listing of all my rules before the move but now everything is packed. I know in the past few years I have downloaded over 100 sets of rules and scenario books off the net. Last count I was in the area of 60 or so just Napoleonic. I just picked up four or five at the FLGS this past week that they were getting ready to scrap.

I tried to email you, but guess there is no way of doing that on here. My email: irishwop67@aol.com
