And I've read them too! What makes it worse is I have no interested in gaming any period prior to 1700 even
I just like reading rule books I guess. |
| Bob in Edmonton | 18 Sep 2009 7:32 p.m. PST |
May I ask what the purpose of collecting all of these rules is? I get that we're hobbyists and we both collect things and stuff just seems to pile up. But is there some reason you collect rule sets? One of the guys in our club calls himself a rule collector and it always puzzled me. Unless you are using them, why have them? Assuming you don't play them all, why have 300 sets? |

Good question. I started buying them for my business – that way when a customer wanted a unit built for, say, General de Brigade I knew how many figures, what size bases he might need, etc. But then it took on a life of its own. They live in the basement in two file cabinets so take up very little space. On the other hand I hardly have any unpainted lead around and I don't save minis "just in case." If I don't need the last jeep in the pack I sell it, give it away, etc. So my entire unpainted lead collection would easily fit in one large storage tub. I always ask the same about people who have 20,000 pieces of unpainted lead in boxes in the basement (I'm looking at you mweaver and neotacha). Why have stuff you know you;ll never really get to? |

Glad to see G.O.B.S.! on your list. Hope you enjoyed reading them, at the very least. I too collect rules— in fact, I was just on the Hasbro sight today downloading their free PDFs from various games (including striking gold by finding Heroquest and the various Quest books for it, all their, all PDF, all free!). On the other hand, I have no where near as many as you list; I do tend to look for specific genres, games or types of rules. And mostly I go for free stuff, unless I have a really strong interest. |

"May I ask what the purpose of collecting all of these rules is?" Because he wants them? Heck, we're ALL a little obsessive/compulsive in this hobby, aren't we? I have a lot of rules I have bought that I don't play, too. Not NEARLY as many as EC, but a fair few. I just like reading them and seeing how authors approach different eras and different situations that come up in games. As others say above, how is it any odder than buying thousands of miniatures that never get painted or played? |
| nazrat | 19 Sep 2009 1:54 p.m. PST |
"Seriously, guys. He probably has them catalogued and just copied and pasted the list." Actually the list IS cut and pasted-- from the last two threads he started on the exact same topic. He just adds more to the list each time
And apparently REALLY likes us all to know about it! 8)= TMP link TMP link |

The first step getting help is to admit you have a problem. I think EC is trying hard to do so. Heck with the rules though, I want to see what's in mweaver and neotacha's basement. |

I'm a rules junkie too in 1997 I set up a site to show off rules from our club members. Then other people started sending in rules, then in 2000 I bought a domain name. Now I link to and host over 1,000 sets of rules. Just when I think there can be no other sets of rules out there someone sends me a link to another set. |
Extra Crispy | 19 Sep 2009 5:21 p.m. PST |
Of course I cut and paste
of course, since I sell/stock a lot of rules I had a head start with just that list. But yes, I like to read and steal good ideas from all kinds of rules sets! |

Now Damn it you have gone and done it. I had a listing of all my rules before the move but now everything is packed. I know in the past few years I have downloaded over 100 sets of rules and scenario books off the net. Last count I was in the area of 60 or so just Napoleonic. I just picked up four or five at the FLGS this past week that they were getting ready to scrap. VR James Mattes |
