For the record, I do not consider this a personal attack, but a response to several on me. YMMV.

Please do the honourable thing, Wg Cdr Luddite, and ask Bill to send you to the DH for a couple of days.

In my humble opinion, you have committed several DHable offenses.
I will outline them below.

1) Personal attacks on me.
In the following TMP topic
TMP link
you said, on post 25:

"Yet more ignorant questions from the (self-proclaimed) OFM.
DO SOME RESEARCH JOHN! There is shed-loads of info out there on BoB colour schemes."

This took great personal courage on your part, since you posted this right after I was sent to the DH for 3 days for something quite unrelated. I deserved that DH, by the way. But I am out now. Obviously.
I might add, in response to your rant, that I consider TMP to be not only a great asset for research, but also a vehicle to clear up ambiguities, many of which show up in the posts above yours. I wish clarification to arise from confusion. I also wish to hold a cyber conversation about research topics with people I consider my cyber friends, several of whom also appear above your rude, hit-a-man-when-he-is down post.

Also, in
TMP link
you post:

"Yet again John your lack of command of the English language shows forth. The correct historical spelling is 'Ities'.

Neither did you specify your chosen scale.
But what else would we expect from someone who plays FOW?
Bloomin' ameteurs."

You were laughably wrong, by the way, and my thanks to Allen for correcting you.

2) Group attack on Flames of War players.
See above.
Also:
TMP link
you said

"Absolutely FOW should have it's own board.

Then they don't have to post their rubbish on the WW2 boards."

and

"The majority of FOW gamers don't do historical research."

That, sir, is a cheap shot. And, it's wrong. On what poll do you base your word "majority"? It certainly does NOT apply to the majority of FoW players with whom I game.

Some may think that I am making a mountain out of a molehill, and perhaps I am. However, I did have three days in the DH to meditate and compose my prison diaries.
Ordinarily, in the Hurricane thread above, I would have just called you a rude name or made a cyber raspberry and let it pass. However, since I could not respond, and you KNEW I could not respond, I consider your behavior ungentlemanly at best, and ((personal attack deleted)) at worst.

So, please, Mister Luddite. Do the right and honourable thing and turn yourself in. I will think better of you if you do.
After you do so, I will be the first to start a "Free Wg Cdr Luddite" thread, in acknowledgement of your courageous manliness. However, if I am at work, it may have to wait a few hours.

Goldwyrm27 Aug 2009 6:48 a.m. PST

Or he could just apologize, or clarify his comments, or you both could just agree to disagree and continue on your merry ways.

aecurtis Fezian27 Aug 2009 6:56 a.m. PST

I think it was harsh of MJS to call him a hillock. Diminutives are demeaning.

If all those who conducted group attacks against FoW players on that thread were incarcerated, the DH would fill right back up.

FoW is a cool looking game. I don't game the period, but it even got me interested in WW2.

I'm not a 'WWII' history buff, per se, but I have found out that despite lots and lots of 'historical references' and new books/research and so on…IF you want to find out MORE of the 'real stuff'…try spending a half-hour in the local VA clinic waiting room with a group of WWII vets telling you about places and events you'd never heard of in ANY history book and then when you google them…(afterwards) you find a 'bare framework' of info…for something that these men WERE THERE and LIVED through…

Not 'zinging' anyone or anything…but HISTORY takes on a whole different meaning when you hear it/see it/feel it through the eyes, minds and souls of those who sat in the foxholes…dreading the dawn, or climbed aboard their B-17's KNOWING that 3/4ths of their unit wouldn't be coming back to base that evening…(when his plane was only one of 4 out of 40 that were based in places you never KNEW we had bases just before D-day…and so on)

The cold, clammy gut-wrenching 'fear' of watching plane after plane drop out of the sky and the formations keep on going…delivering their bombs and then limping back home….on a 'wing and a prayer'…

Somehow…you don't feel much like 'debating' how 'correct' or not the 'history books' or 'game systems' or players might or might not have it…after something like that.

Gaming is supposed to be fun and history, something we're supposed? to 'learn' from…(lest we repeat it)?

I don't think ripping each other up, being 'disrespectful' to one another…(can't we just 'agree to disagree', politely..on some things???) and honor the fact that by playing the games…reliving some of the battles…either as they were/could have been or never were STILL 'raises awareness' of the INCREDIBLE 'sacrifices' and HISTORY that we're STILL finding out about, even now?

Or you can sit and shoot spitwads at each other I suppose….because sometimes…the 'nitpicking' that goes on around here sounds like something that I thought I left behind in grade school.

If you disagree…then don't make it 'personal'…and vindictive or humiliating. Nobody likes that.

Fact or fiction…history or just good 'theater'…it's about sharing and having fun and maybe just 'learning something'.

How about it folks???

Slishfully,
Sgt DWW-btod

Could it be Wing Commander Luddite just meant to take the Bleeped text out of you in an affectionate manner, and, being Deleted by Moderator was unable to transmit that affection in his post? Sarcasm is notoriously difficult to communicate over the net.

Just trying to cut WCL some slack here, He is from Doncaster after all. Not trying to start an argument or anything. After the flooding two years ago, a lot of people from South Yorkshire found they preferred it back in the water.

I did, but connard made fun of it. (I think he's jealous of my Dilbert tie…)

So, in the spirit of the OFM's thread, I will request Connard Sage do the honorable thing and put a picture of himself on his Profile.

In the spirit of 'not wanting to view Lovecraftian non-Euclidean geometry or other sanity-ruining things', I will request Mexican Jack Squint NOT to post a picture on his Profile. Hard cheese Jack, but we can't be scaring the horses.

Hey allen, is that Adam Savage from Mythbusters on your profile?

Derek H27 Aug 2009 10:25 a.m. PST

Is your skin getting thinner as you get older John!

religon27 Aug 2009 10:28 a.m. PST

I disagree with Ditto Bird about the quoted comments. Calling someone ignorant or someone's position ignorant is a personal attack. It may be accurate, but even a justified attack is an attack.

Please review the Rules of Conduct. The seventh bullet point reads…

Somebody just posted something stupid. Can I call them an idiot?

No name calling. You can disagree with their argument, but you can't "attack" them personally. [NAME CALLING RULE, PERSONAL ATTACK RULE]

Can you make fun of someone's screen name? No. The wording "self-proclaimed" is a dig at John's screen name.

The first Rule of Conduct is "Act like an adult." Calling someone's question ignorant is not mature. Using allcaps to tell someone to do more research is not mature. Children, use you inside voice.

I do not agree with John that a Group Attack was made on FoW players. I would call use of the term "their rubbish" to simply be an opinion of the game. Saying that FoW players don't do research is a cheap shot and lacks civility, but their are no rules requiring civility or respectful comments.

Goldwyrm27 Aug 2009 10:43 a.m. PST

Calling someone's question ignorant is not mature. Using allcaps to tell someone to do more research is not mature.

Maturity is achieved by not desiring it.

"Hey allen, is that Adam Savage from Mythbusters on your profile?"

No, that's me, when I still had reddish hair. I thought I'd lost that photo, but ran across it the other day, so I thought I'd put it to some use.

It's cropped so that it doesn't show the Russian generals…

Allen

Derek H27 Aug 2009 10:54 a.m. PST

I'm with Tim. Re dick status and re personal attacks.

The phrase "yet more ignorant quesions" is quite clearly stating that the questions were ignorant, not than the person asking them, so technically no personal attack.

Connard Sage27 Aug 2009 11:00 a.m. PST

A question doesn't ask itself though does it?

aecurtis Fezian27 Aug 2009 11:47 a.m. PST

"A question doesn't ask itself though does it?"

No, Socrates, it doesn't.

Now, O Buddha, does suffering itself generate karma?

Today's tour of the Wide World of Philosophy…

religon27 Aug 2009 11:54 a.m. PST

I'm sure Goldwyrm is not ignorant of the fact that ignorance is a state that cannot exist without a sentient, self-aware intellect. While an illogical question can exist in a purely Platonic form, an ignorant question cannot.

Goldwyrm27 Aug 2009 12:31 p.m. PST

ignorance is a state that cannot exist without a sentient, self aware intellect.

Are you defining ignorance as the absence of knowledge, the absence of wisdom, or something else?

Is the self awareness a grasp of one's personal desires, an introspective insight or an understanding of one's place in the whole?

JackWhite27 Aug 2009 12:39 p.m. PST

Condottiere27 Aug 2009 1:25 p.m. PST

…does suffering itself generate karma?

Desire causes suffering. Suffering generates karma. Desire brings about karma. ???

Hexxenhammer27 Aug 2009 1:36 p.m. PST

Wasn't it Socrates who said "All we are is dust in the wind"?

No, that was Ted. Socrates said, "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives."

religon27 Aug 2009 2:01 p.m. PST

Goldwyrm, I'm not defining ignorance in any special manner. The irony of the second statement is more interesting. Platonic forms, or universals, exist outside of time and space. As ignorance is the state of an individual or group of individuals, it must have a temporal quality and hence is a particular and not a universal. Perhaps only humorous, or even comprehensible, to those who appreciate Platonic philosophy.

Ignorance is a quality of a person or persons. Logic is a quality of an idea. This distinction is essentially the difference of opinion John and I have with Tim and Derek.

Ignorance is not an absence of knowledge or wisdom, but rather the lack of awareness by an individual of knowledge. In the United States, as well as many other countries, characterizing someone as ignorant is insulting.

Plato identified man as the animal with logos, reason and speech. A philosopher would take issue with me equating an individual with an intellect, but to do otherwise would not have allowed me to use the word ignorant three times, intellect once, and illogical once. :)
