Following up on my earlier battle report of the Battle of Southam using One-Hour Wargames,
BatRep OHW: TMP link

the battle has been refought using Basic Impetvs Baroque.
BatRep BI Baroque: link

Same battle, two rules, both enjoyable.

Great report, some lovely figures too.

Great report, thanks. Must try to get my crew playing Basic Impetus one of these days. And the baroque version too.

Thanks guys!

Vtsogames, do give Impetvs a try. It produces a very good game in whichever period you try.

I have in the past. One of our former members really detested the cohesion test. You roll a 1 and nothing the enemy does matters. So it may be time to resurrect the rules.

JonFreitag13 Sep 2015 7:22 p.m. PST

Rolling a '1' does not immune a unit from all enemy effect. Passing a Cohesion Test still causes the testing unit to become disordered. If already disordered, it suffers one permanent hit and remains disordered.

Right. But a flanked unit doesn't rout, or do I have that wrong?

JonFreitag14 Sep 2015 9:51 a.m. PST

In this situation, the flanked unit would not rout since it did not fail the Cohesion Test. It would be locked in melee for another round. Can it roll another '1' during Cohesion?

vtsaogames14 Sep 2015 10:04 a.m. PST

Rare I know. I had two units (Gothic infantry preceded by skirmishers) hit in the flank by my buddy's Hun Noble cavalry. He got a hit on each, I got one hit back. Both units passed their cohesion with 1's (my dice were hot). He failed with a six and routed. He swore never to play again. In a small club, any member has a veto on rules.

From your description, I do not fully follow the example but pitching a set of rules due to a very low probability event occurring? A bit premature, I think.

One must keep in mind the granularity of gaming. What we see on the table in your situation are two discrete events:

1. Two units are approached from the flank by an attacking enemy unit
2. Attacker is repulsed and routs

Perhaps, your forces were never actually struck in the flank but turned to drive off the cavalry at the last minute? Perhaps, the cavalry's leader went down in the melee and the cavalry panicked?

One never can be certain what might be transpiring down on the game table when we witness the action from far above.

A bit premature? I agree. But my gaming mate didn't and that's what counted. You can lead a horse to water…
