Hey all, Anyone ordered this? It's really tempting me but I was trying to hold off buying anything else until Salute! Wondering if the pikes are integral or seperate, and if so are they included. I also remember reading on a previous post that the included cavalry are out-of-period
not sure if the deal is so great if the cavalry are not useful. Any opinions/reviews of this particular range (and army deal) much appreciated
I was reading a book on medieval warfare recently and the chapter on the swiss just really gave me the bug, and right about the same time this army deal popped up on Foundry's web site – the gods are working against my wallet, I swear it! |

The pikes are separate--but
They used to include them with a deal that could use them. But they haven't had that size in stock for a while, so you might not receive any. The gendarmes are anachronistic. For very good quality figures (really!) at a much more attractive price, look at Old Glory's Swiss and Italians. If you do pick up some of the Foundry packs (for example, their command), they will mix with the OG figures nicely. If you're going to Salute, look at the Old Glory figures there

A large Swiss Army can be bought at VERY reasonable prices at Old Glory (if'n you buy the discount card). I would perhaps use some Flemish pike mixed in with the Swiss. Any Gendarmes would be from Milan if purely a Swiss army or part of a French Army. Pikes with Old Glory have to be bought separately too though – 6 usd for 30. Find Foundry nice but pricey. I would also recommend the Foundry command. [Swiss were the first figs I owned – mix of mostly Minifig with some Ral Partha and Hinchcliffe. Have stripped the enamel paint off them and will rebase for Age of Discovery. As my icon suggests am partial to Burgundians -great Old Glory range for these so take advice with grain of salt]. |

I too like the Old Glory Swiss and Landsknecht pike figures and find they mix well with Foundry. |

The gendarmes shown in the picture tend to look like they were from 1520's, more appropriate fit would be some of the late medieval cavalry that Foundry has in stock. For a purely Swiss force, lighter cavalry such as mounted crossbowmen might be even better fit, since the Swiss were never strong on heavy cavalry. Though some say that their mounted crossbowmen were also likely to fight on foot. Griefbringer |

Go for O.G. The solid cast hands mean that your pikes don't ping off all the time. You can see some of mine here, pikeandplunder.blogspot.com

Also notice that with Foundry, you have the options of buying the smaller collection and/or horde deals, which would probably be handier starting points than the big army deal (in case you still decide to go with Foundry). Griefbringer |

Thanks for the tips guys. I was definitely looking for a "look" that was earlier than 1500's. Mainly 14th century actually – the battles described in the book were in the period from Morgarten to Sempach, before the Burgundian/Italian wars. By the way it's the book "warfare in the medieval world" by Brian Todd Carey that got me all jazzed up about Swiss – he describes an archeological dig where they discovered that almost all of the combatants had cleaved skulls from the swiss halberdiers! Ouch! I will take a look at the OG stuff, and you've definitely given me a chance to cool off and avoid an impulse buy. Salute is only a few weeks away and I doubt they'll remove the deal before then. I'll hold off for now and see what's on offer at the show. Do love those foundry swiss though
may be delaying the inevitable! |
