… to halt resurgence.

"The U.S. surged past 150,000 COVID-19 fatalities Wednesday as states battle a resurgence of the virus with differing attitudes about how to stop the spread.

The bleak milestone, reported by Johns Hopkins, comes on the heels of the U.S. hitting 4 million confirmed infections July 23. The death toll stood at 150,034 as of 4 p.m. EDT on Wednesday.

And there is not much relief in sight. The three most populous states – California, Texas and Florida – were among several that set seven-day records for virus deaths this week. Others set records for new cases. Tennessee and Arkansas set records for both…"

Sigh…

Mr Elmo30 Jul 2020 4:10 a.m. PST

How long has California's mask mandate been in effect? How is that working out exactly?

Personal logo Dan Cyr Supporting Member of TMP30 Jul 2020 8:21 a.m. PST

June 18th, just in time for all the young to go out and party prior to the order, assuming they are now.

This helps explain Florida's numbers:

Perhaps the same situation for the others?

Wmyers, at what point are you going to start thinking that, maybe, there is actually a dangerous bug out there, that's killing tens of thousands of people more than usually die every month, and that there's actually no weird global conspiracy by the illuminati to spread fear (sorry, FEAR) and take CONTROL away from us all?

Sorry if I sound tetchy (OK, I'm not sorry) but having had 2 good friends die of this thing in the last 2 months (both in their 50's with no major health issues), I'm getting increasingly irritated by those whose selfish actions are only prolonging the pain (and don't get me onto the subject of Government incompetence!)

Mr Elmo31 Jul 2020 4:46 p.m. PST

selfish actions are only prolonging the pain

All one needs to do the look at either cases or positivity to see that mask mandates don't work? Why might that be I wonder?

It's amazing how we warped liberty and critical thinking into being selfish.

Bascha,

(both in their 50's with no major health issues)

My condolences. Sorry, but I just have to ask the question. Was an autopsy performed? Was a blood lab test worked up?
You said they had no major health issues. Did they have any minor health issues? What medications were they on? If your immune system is compromised to any extent the virus seems to find a way to attack. There is more evidence this virus attacks the blood and other organs too.

A 30-year-old in FL died having the CCP virus, he had diabetes. Not exactly a major health concern, at least he didn't think so. Right now there is no consensus on how this virus attacks the different systems. In 4-5 years we'll have a better understanding. Right now it's a guessing game.

I'm over 65, no health issues, no medications, take vitamin C, fish oil & zinc, exercise, spend 1+ hours outside each day, eat right, ride my bike 20+ miles each weekend. I drink only IPA microbrews with a 10%+ alcohol content. I feel great!

Stay healthy my friends.

Wolfhag

Mr Elmo, your link is broken. But looking internationally, countries with mask mandates have done well. Also see link

Captain Oblivious01 Aug 2020 8:07 a.m. PST

I fear that at some point people will connect people without masks and Typhoid Mary, and conflict will continue to escalate between normal people that are just scared and trying to whistle their way past the graveyard.

Mr Elmo01 Aug 2020 1:43 p.m. PST

mask mandates have done well

The trend line for California has been 30 Degrees upward ever since the mandate started on June 18. It's been at least two incubation cycles now with no change.

Mask mandates don't work because people wear the mask incorrectly or wear an ineffective covering or I even see couples with one wearing and one not and YOU KNOW they are both unmasked after leaving the store.

Studies on how masks work do not factor in how people wear them.

These are my favorite masks to date

The ones in the link are pretty funny! It just goes to show people still have a sense of humour.

Especially due to the fact the pore size of cloth face coverings range from ~ 20-100 microns. The Covid virus is 200-1000x smaller than that, at 0.1 microns.

It's like putting up a chain link fence to keep out a mosquito.

Even the most esteemed medical journals admit their purpose is just to calm anxiety.

Nick Bowler01 Aug 2020 4:20 p.m. PST

wmyers – you obviously didnt read the link I provided. Also, look at link The evidence is mounting -- masks have an impact.

La Belle Ruffian01 Aug 2020 4:35 p.m. PST

wmyers, that's not what is suggested here…https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/face-masks-coverings-coronavirus-do-they-work-shops-transport-a9617666.html

If the law only says you have to wear a mask and you have one of the fashion masks, that's still a mask, technically. (?)

jdginaz01 Aug 2020 9:27 p.m. PST

Apparently the highest chance of getting covid-19 is from someone not wearing their mask in public but from not wearing your mask at home.

So are going to mandate that people wear masks at home and have the police do roving checks to make sure people are wearing masks in their homes?

Basha Felika02 Aug 2020 3:01 a.m. PST

Wmyers, as a reasonably educated man, you know full well that the relative size of the virus compared to the pores in a cloth face covering is deliberately misleading: it's the method of transmission that's important – and the water/saliva droplets that it's carried in ARE effectively stopped by a face covering.

Sure, you can't allow for the stupid, the facetious and the awkward squad but if 80-90% of the population use their common sense and mask-up, it's going to make a significant difference to the spread of the virus.

I really don't understand why you feel it's such an infringement of your civil liberties to wear a mask when going into a store – no-one is telling you that you can't go in, just putting some conditions on entry – no different from stores that require men to wear a t-shirt when coming in off the beach, for example, or the laws that state you cannot drive while drunk or without wearing a seatbelt, or ride a motorbike without a helmet, surely?

There are no studies that actually verify that, it's not even known for sure if the virus is transmitted via droplets.

This is what happens when there is fear mongering regarding masks:

Basha Felika02 Aug 2020 10:56 a.m. PST

Sometimes it's necessary to stop banging your head against a brick wall, and I think, for me, that moment has come.

Let's all hope that you're right and I'm wrong, and that your RIGHT not to wear a mask, and not to give into FEAR, does not lead to thousands of unnecessary deaths.

For my part, I'll continue to wear a mask when I'm out, I don't feel oppressed wearing one and it's a darn sight more comfortable than having a ventilator tube shoved down my throat.

Stay safe

Asteroid X02 Aug 2020 11:23 a.m. PST

I'm very familiar with the wearing of masks. Many orientals wear them here and it's common from before this whole pandemic.

People should be allowed to wear them when they want. That's not a bad thing.

Telling people to wear a facsimile of a real mask (fabric, etc) has nothing to do with effective medical practices. It could be argued to be malpractice.

It would be like issuing cork guns for deployment.

Basha Felika03 Aug 2020 12:20 p.m. PST

"Orientals"??

Is it still 1963 in Canada?

Mr Elmo04 Aug 2020 4:48 p.m. PST

why you feel it's such an infringement of your civil liberties to wear a mask when going into a store

Most of it depends on how you got to that moment. Is the rule one imposed by the store?

Or, are you now wearing the mask because the executive branch created a law and it's enforcement from whole cloth without involving the legislative branch? The USA has separation of powers and if the government wants to mandate masks, that should come about by laws from the various state legislators.

If you saw how the Covid-19 death numbers get manipulated you might not be so quick to believe them. Yes people die and more likely if you have other health issues such as smoking, overweight, other respiratory problems, over 65 years old.
And have yet to wear a cloth mask this year and yes in a mask mandatory area.
