If you enjoy Star Wars, go

I'm trying REAL HARD to be good about that…

We got a 'Bingo' last night using cards from here:

My wife and I thought it was fun, and plan to see it again, this time sitting in the middle of the theatre instead of way off on the side.

I saw it yesterday. I thought it was total crap, narratively ridiculous with boring characters, misusing the old cast, devoid of any new ideas and a dialogue like a third rate Marvel movie that was completely out of place in the Star Wars universe.

I can only assume that Disney paid huge bribes to the world's film critics to get them all to gush about it as they have. Either that or film critics are fools to a man.

I saw it and enjoyed it--sort of :) It was too long and the middle section dragged badly. There was a completely unnecessary sub-plot which took up at least 20 minutes. There were some issues with three separate story lines and how they could possibly be operating on the same time line.

However most of that was redeemed by a very strong finish, so I'd have to give it a reserved thumbs-up. Better than Episode VII, surely.

Not understanding why they included Luke, Han, and Leia. Disney is doing all it can to distance itself from the Lucas films.it wasn't horrible, but it had no heart. They have characters who aren't even necessary. You could remove Poe, Rose, Finn, Phasma, Snoke, and many more and still have the same story. Wasn't horrible, it was meh. The hype around it was more exciting.

It was…OK. Even I get the idea that this series of three films is about transition, from the original Lucas trilogy to the planned for Disney series of films.

There was a certain guilty pleasure in seeing the characters from the first films back on screen again, juxtaposed with the new generation fighting the same battles.

I did realise though with Rogue One that after over 30 years I am tired of seeing Storm Troopers/Clone Troopers (and whatever the First Order ones are called, are they back to Storm Troopers?) being mown down without end. Episode VIII was a little different, in that it was mostly Rebel Alliance troopers being snuffed, and at lest unlike Rogue One not everyone died.

Mostly though I'm just tired of the way that technologically advanced civilisations and organisations conduct war in the Star Wars universe. I know they are films and escapism, but still, it's like they went straight from edged weapons to laser weapons without evolving through the development of ranged weapons, dispersal and manoeuvre. That's an abridged rant, I can inflict a much longer one, and would love to do so with someone actually involved in the writing.

Gary

And yes, I'll watch IX all being well to see how they tie up what they choose to, while leaving enough for the inevitable X-XII.

I thought the sub plot was unnecessary too. It was pointless except to introduce a new unapealing villain.

For myself I really enjoyed it with the exception of a certain gold plated droid otherwise all was good.

As for the running time of the film I didn't mind it in fact I didn't know going in that it was 2 1/2 hours it went by so fast I didn't notice.

Haven't seen it yet.

I thought it was great popcorn-munching fun.

Ok, I'll go. As long as you can promise me this will really be the last Jedi movie. :)

Hmm, me thinks that it will not be the Last Jedi movie.

Saw it tonight and enjoyed it – maybe not quite so much as The Force Awakens – but it was very good nonetheless.

Mithmee27 Dec 2017 10:46 p.m. PST

That was a very good movie.

Highly recommend it.

Glad you liked it Mithmee. According to the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, there's a roughly 50 percent chance you would hate TLJ.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP28 Dec 2017 1:38 p.m. PST

Critics gave it 91%. Not sure it was that good – some of the jokes, although only short segments of the film, undermined it a bit for me. The Rotten Tomatoes viewers score (51% as I type) surprises me – but there are a vocal minority who do seem determined to trash the film.

But if you want flashy space battles, huge ships, jedi mind tricks, light sabre battles and all that then….it's still probably the movie for you.

It dropped two percentage points because it was at 93% when I posted my review: link

The audience score was also 3 percentage points higher I think, so the naysayers are gaining ground. This has also been a hot topic on TMP: TMP link

I detest any film that is described as being part of a "universe."
